Bleeding on Saturday! No scan available HELP

My partner is 7 weeks pregnant and yesterday (sat) started bleeding, we went to Morriston hospital out of ours where they took her blood pressure etc and examined her then sent us to singleton hospital for blood tests! We waited all day for a blood test they said they couldn't fit us in for a scan until Thursday! That's absolutely crazy! My partner has not stopped crying she's heartbroken and all she wants to know is if we are still having a baby, Is there anywhere we can go before Thursday?? shes still bleeding today and said she seen a clot which is not good, just want to know where we stand, thanks

I have been there myself, once a miscarriage and once with a pregnancy that continued so I know how difficult it is. 1/4 women in the UK will have a miscarriage in their lifetime.

There is nothing anyone can do to stop it if your partner is miscarrying and often early in the bleeding a scan may not give you a result which reflects the long term outcome.

If you wanted you could book a private scan but personally I wouldn’t as they won’t be able to answer questions about what will happen next and if medical intervention is needed.

U could get a private scan not sure how much they cost though, bleeding can be normal in pregnancy though so try to stay positive (I know easier said than done) is she passing clots at all? Is she in pain? If u have no luck today try the hospital again tomorrow and just keep trying, fingers crossed for you

It's hard as the NHS don't do much in this situation as there is little they can do to influence the outcome of the pregnancy.

Your only real option for a quicker scan is to go for a private one - ultrasound direct offer early pregnancy scans and are located throughout the UK.

Thanks for your quick responses, I'm going to look into a private scan today, anyone know of any in the Swansea (south wales) area, I'm willing to travel up to the Severn bridge tho

Just google 'early pregnancy scan'. There's usually clinics everywhere, any city would have a few. Good luck.

Just seen the ultrasound direct they have one in Swansea in mothercare, for £89 but won't be until tomorrow, so will book that now if I can't Find anything today, thanks

Good luck Dale. If you can bear to, prepare yourself for the worst but sometimes bleeds, even big ones, are actually nothing. Hopefully that is the case.

With such an early pregnancy your partner may need an internal scan so you will have to be happy for this and you need to make sure that they can do this.

I don't advise you go for a private scan.
My experience of these has been mixed. Some have been able to give me the bad news there and then, but others told me to come back in a week or two.
Diagnosis of early pregnancy loss is not always a case of one scan and you have your answer, even in the NHS (although in my experience the NHS is better than many private providers, not least because there will usually be a consultant on site).
It's also a bit shit to pay £90 for bad news.
If you can, really, wait until Thursday (or call the NHS tomorrow and see if they have had a cancellation). If your partner is miscarrying, unfortunately there is nothing that can be done to stop it, but she may need a number of scans to confirm it.

Hi Dale, it's not unusual for early pregnancy units to have a few days delay in scanning. If she had a blood test yesterday (HCG levels) then she should have them repeated tomorrow as they would see how high they are and whether they've doubled (or something similar) within 48 hours. That way they'll know whether the pregnancy is progressing. Therefore, I would save yourself the money and just have a blood test.

But Polly, it would be the same with the NHS scan they desperately want. I personally would want the scan regardless. And cope better with having all the information possible as soon as possible. Even if that info is that it's too early to be sure if anything.

Hi Dale, I live not too far from you but not in the same health board so served by a different hospital. I had quite a lot of bleeding at 7 weeks pregnant and called my GP out of hours and was lucky enough that they had a cancellation slot for the next day but I was also given a heads up that it can take a few days for scans to come through as EPUs are so busy. I know this is a horrible and uncertain time for you both but I'd be inclined to wait for the NHS one as given your partner is only 7 weeks it would not be uncommon for a scan to not detect a heartbeat or necessarily a sac... so paying for a private scan now might not actually give you much more certainty than waiting til Thursday and they might tell you that you'll need another scan anyway? The blood test results will be more reliable at this stage.

Fingers crossed for you both, thankfully all was ok for me and I had another bleed a few days after my EPU scan, so I remember the fear all too well. Up to you but personally I'd be saving the £89 and waiting until Thursday.

I know it's a shock and so upsetting but I really wouldn't go with a private scan either for all of the reasons already said.

It is possible to have bleeding and everything still be ok,it was for me or as others have said not.

I’ve been in your position a couple of times and it is horrible ☹️ I have always had to wait a few days for a scan, although waiting until Thursday is a long time. I have paid for private scans to get answers quicker - I would just check if they do internal scans though because that will probably be necessary at this early stage to get answers. I can recommend baby bond in Mothercare for scans, they have been brill every time I have been.

I've been in your position and it's awful but the reality is there is nothing that can be done if it is miscarriage.

NHS scan appointments have to be kept for co dictionary that could be life threatening, emergency gynae bleeding, ectopic pregnancies, ovarian torsion etc.

Look into a private scan and hopefully all will be well.

Good luck. I was bleeding very heavily the other day and the scan showed baby was fine. There are lots of reasons to bleed in pregnancy and often it's ok.

I know you are probably both going crazy but there's not much you can do. Bleeding in early pregnancy is very common. Miscarriage is sadly also common. If the pregnancy is failing there is nothing that can be done at this stage.

Did the hospital book a second test to see what the levels are doing?

No, it may well not be the same with the NHS scan.
An NHS unit will do blood tests alongside and will have a senior doctor available who can make whatever call is needed. Some private sonographer in the back of mothercare is not going to do those things.

Don't go for a private scan, go back for a further HCG blood test tomorrow - the GP should be able to do this (the results should be back same day or day after).

HCG bloods work on comparison, so you'd need a second test to see whether the levels are rising appropriately or not. This will give you a better idea of what's happening than a scan.

A scan so early may not give you any answers and will not necessarily reassure you. EPAU clinics are likely to book you in for more than one scan if the first is inconclusive but they always use blood HCG levels to give a full clinical picture.

Private scan clinics will not be able to do bloods or any follow up that may be needed so they'd refer you back to the NHS for bloods and further scans if needed, which you will have to wait for so essentially you could be delaying further action by having a private scan and could well be wasting the best part of £100 for what could be bad or inconclusive results. Not to mention the further anguish caused by not knowing what's going on.

My advice as a HCP is have further bloods and use that as your guide.

Unfortunately, the reality of the situation is that if the pregnancy is ending, nothing can be done to prevent it. However, many, many women bleed heavily in early pregnancy and have pregnancies that continue on to a healthy baby.
