Is it only me who won't go for the snuz pod things and other gadgets?

I'm surprised at all the latest technology with stuff when I had my DS. It was a plain old moses basket then a cot. He slept fine. All thro the night from 7 weeks. ( bet I won't be that lucky this time lol)
But when I look now there's all these next to me cribs. Sleeping aids, Sensor pads etc.
I'm not knocking it by any stretch of the imagination. I'm just not won over by it.
We've got a crib for next to the bed and getting one of those napper rockers for lounge. Altho were on one level I just would prefer something in each room. And tbh I may not bother with a normal sound monitor as it will always be with us.
Think I'm old fashioned.. Lol

Tbh I don't have the money for it all, or the room, or the need. He'll be totally fine in the cot and the pushchair when we're out. The only thing I may get is a sling but that'll be for DH to wear not me as I've been carrying him for 9 months. His turn next 😂
Again I don't knock anyone who uses it all. I just prefer to stick to the basics. I'd be too overwhelmed otherwise with choices.

MrsPicklesonSmythe · 04/10/2017 16:33

Same here. It wasn't around with my older children and they were fine.
I'll get an angelcare again because I'm a paranoid fruitloop about sids but other than that I'm pretty old school compared to my friends who are all new mums.

Frillyhorseyknickers · 04/10/2017 16:37

Get whatever works for you. Personally I think good old fashioned Moses baskets are hideous, noisy and fucking useless after about three months which is why I opted for a snuzpod. That and the fact that at 3am feeds I'm lazy AF and he is literally right next to me so I don't have to climb out of bed.

reallyorange · 04/10/2017 16:46

How is a Next2Me crib a gadget? It's a crib that goes next to the bed. Like you have. Hmm Before I had my baby a million people told me that theirs didn't sleep in a Moses basket for more than a few weeks.

What sleeping aids do you mean? Mobiles have been around for ages. Ewan the Sheep is the only thing I can think you mean.

Sensor pads have a specific purpose, don't get them if they don't apply to you. Why would you expect to be 'won over' by every item available? Are you usually? I don't buy the vast majority of stuff in the supermarket when I go shopping...

Have to say my video monitor has been a godsend for the past 3 years but that's the main bit of 'tech' I've used.

ijustwannadance · 04/10/2017 16:51

I hate moses baskets. Waste of money. Last time I just used pram carrycot for downstairs naps.

NoCryLilSoftSoft · 04/10/2017 16:54

Not sure I get the point of this thread. People use different things for different reasons. There is a slight undertone of superiority coming from the OP tbh. Not having gadgets doesn't make you better.

Aliveinwanderland · 04/10/2017 16:58

I would class a downstairs napper as a gadget. Each to their own.

I had a snuzpod because I wanted a bedside crib. I didn’t have a Moses basket, have never had a baby monitor of any sort and don’t use sleep monitors. If I thought I needed one I would.

SparkyBlue · 04/10/2017 17:11

I had one of the Chicco next 2 me co sleepers and it was the best piece of baby equipment I purchased. Just raging I didn’t have one for dc1.

100% this ^

I had a Moses basket and it was useless, it was so noisy every time I put dd into it she woke up. She also never slept in the swinging crib. The Chicco next2me was the best purchase and after almost 5 weeks of not sleeping for more than 40 minutes at a time we finally invested in a sleepyhead which gave me up to 90 minutes sleep. It was amazing and who cares if it's classed as a 'gadget', I wasn't intending upon buying one but I'm glad I did.

Mum2oneds · 04/10/2017 17:43

No it was purely a general conversation.. N it a superiority thing at all?
I just am Suprised by all the different things. Then make ya kinda of feel bad coz I'm not buying it.. That 's all. Nothing was meant as offensive I'm anyway honest

And next to me crib I didn't mean as gadget. Just that type of thing or even co-sleeping was a big no no when I had DS.. Aparantly it was to prevent clingyness. I still used to do it tho haha. I was just Suprised that's all at how different it all is.

I've never said it makes me better and it wasn't intended that way. Sorry if it came across like that

Belive me if this one doesn't settle like DS did I would try anything lol. So would get whatever to save my sanity lol

Apologies Op. I misinterpreted your meaning. My youngest was an horrendous sleeper and still keeps me awake at night (aged 8!) so I know if I were to have another baby I would be buying whatever it took to get me some essential sleep.

mindutopia · 04/10/2017 17:52

We never really saw the point of any of it either. We even got rid of our Moses basket after #1 as it never got any use. I had a wrap and we had the cot in our room next to the bed (though she always slept in bed with me anyway). I even considered getting rid of the cot this time around (I'm 21 weeks now). No fancy gadgets, just plain old monitor with sound. Only thing we really did spend money on was a really good ERF car seat, which lasted us til our dd was 4.5 and we can use with this baby too as it's safe for 12 years of use. As it is we have so much stuff, kinda glad we don't have any more!

Mum2oneds · 04/10/2017 18:00

Yeah not having a moses basket this time. And chose the napper rocker as can be used as a bouncer after.. Which my dad chose to get us so I won't say no :p.
I didn't even have the gro bag things with DS but I prob will this time.. I think I'm just old fashioned lol.

With DS and DD I used a Chicco Next to Me crib which was amazing and DD (7 months) is still in the Sleepyhead I bought when DS was a week old and hadn't slept more than 2 hours in a row. With all due respect OP you haven't had a baby that hasn't slept through the night for 7 months (and counting). When you're sleep deprived you'll do anything.

silkpyjamasallday · 04/10/2017 18:12

We had a snuzpod, but only used it for a couple of weeks before we started cosleeping, I definitely didn't get my money's worth there but it is going to a pregnant friend so hopefully she will make use of it. Certainly better than a Moses basket as 50th centile DD could have slept in it up to about 10 months.

I love our video monitor though, DD wakes up silently quite often and sits in the dark on her own for a bit before she starts whimpering or crying, I like to get to her before she gets upset. Plus I have anxiety so I like to be able to see her breathing, and she has the white noise on so loud I'd worry we wouldn't hear her straight away. I had the bedside light on in our bedroom all night for the first six months until DP insisted on darkness Blushit wasn't expensive and has been the most used thing by far other than pram and sling.

Cracklesfire · 04/10/2017 18:18

I think you could get completely carried away if you wanted to & spend a fortune on things that won't necessarily add any value. And your sort of made to feel you NEED these things.

Ewan the dream sheep is my hero though.

Heartofglass12345 · 04/10/2017 18:19

Wow am i the only one who likes moses baskets 😂 both my boys had them and slept in them for about 5 months, we used to put them in them downstairs then carry them upstairs when we went to bed. They are a bit creaky though.
We had a sensor mat for my 2nd as he decided to stop breathing when he was 3 weeks old, i dont think i wouldve got any sleep otherwise lol.
You get what you think you’ll need i suppose, but you dont really know how useful it is until the baby comes lol

reetgood · 04/10/2017 18:23

Imagine being a first time parent op. Pregnant with first born and I have no frickin idea. Who knows what kind of baby we'll get? Basically I'm just availing myself of options. Found a Moses basket on freecycle. My nhs trust gives out baby boxes. Hiring a bed nest side cot for £80. Sod's law will end up not using any of it.

I very nearly had a meltdown trying to work out what kind of transport. My usual rule of thumb is 'best value for money' but how do I know what will be the best value when I don't know whether we'll end up even using a pram/buggy. Fortunately I talked myself out of buying something just because it was on sale. My mum pointed out we live in a city and there is such a thing as online delivery so stop panicking :) she's very impressed by the new innovations, it's moved on a bit since thirty mumble years ago.

But yeah. There is such a thing as too much choice. (A whole questionnaire to help me work out what kind of cloth nappies might work for me? And I felt I needed the help!)

RosyPony · 04/10/2017 18:24

I'm buying a sleepyhead, they weren't around for my first and he slept like shit until 2.5 YEARS. To be honest if someone told me that a £2.5k pair of dried goats testicles helped my child to sleep, I'd buy them.

Well done on having a baby that slept though from 7 weeks, let's hope your second does too so you don't need to try these 'gadgets' because you're so tired you think you might actually be how 'The Living Dead' starts in real life.

Cracklesfire · 04/10/2017 18:25

I loved my moba Moses basket heart - it didn't creak like the woven ones but DS outgrew it quickly.

DeadButDelicious · 04/10/2017 18:33

We had a next to me and Ewan the dream sheep (he's going in the will, he's been worth every single penny of the £29.99 spent on him). We also had a Moses basket downstairs that DD was in till 6 months. We have an angel care monitor and that's about it. You do get bombarded with 'must haves' these days. My parents were astounded at the things you could buy. I don't think my dad will ever get over the concept of ready made formula.

MySecretToTell · 04/10/2017 18:43

Sorry OP, I misinterpreted your OP and was on the defensive.

One thing we never used was the sensor mat monitor. We couldn't work out how to use it with the next2me and before that I was always right next to my dd. I never left her side when she slept because I didn't like not seeing her so the video monitor which I swore I didn't need in the beginning is still being used 3 years later. That's one 'gadget' I refused to believe I needed yet have loved.

Mum2oneds · 04/10/2017 19:06

Oh believe me of no 2 doesn't sleep like DS did then I'll go for anything lol

Aliveinwanderland · 04/10/2017 20:13

Next time round I’m having a sleepyhead and a my hummy. DS is 11 Months and has never slept more than 3 hours at a time but is too old to introduce them now.
