Baby kicks - when do you notice a pattern?

I'm 20 weeks and I've felt little flutters since about 16 weeks, they're starting to feel more like little kicks now but I'm not really noticing a pattern as such? Some days I feel her dancing away and kicking me for about an hour non stop (mainly in the evening) and some days I hardly feel anything! When do you start to really notice a pattern that you become familiar with? At my 20 week scan they found that my placenta is "anterior", will this probably cushion the kicks some days? Thank you :)

Unfortunately I don't have an answer but I'm curious what it is too. I'm 20 weeks and the baby seems to have some days where I'll feel him/her for a good chunk of time and then others where I feel like I barely do.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 30/09/2017 17:18

I can't ever remember a pattern tbh.

Howaboutanotherusername · 30/09/2017 17:21

I didn't really notice a pattern tbh was always a bit more active in the evening but that was about it

TLH0307 · 30/09/2017 17:25

That's a relief, i keep reading that we're supposed to notice some sort of pattern! Aww saz626 mine is definitely more active in the evening, usually right when I want to nod off haha!

I was told from about 28 weeks.

AmyB1986 · 30/09/2017 18:04

Usually they say from 28 weeks you should start to notice a pattern in movement or increased movement. At 20 weeks Baby has a lot of room to soon still which is probably why you feel less on some days, could be facing you spine.
I started to notice more of a pattern from 30 weeks 😊

**spin not soon

I never noticed one all throughout pregnancy, someone told me having no pattern at all was a pattern Confused

Hannabee123 · 30/09/2017 18:44

I'm nearly 28 weeks and I have no pattern really. Placenta is at the front and sometimes I feel her during the day sometimes I dont. Trying not to worry about it as long as I feel something at some point each day. Going to ask my midwife next week as I have no clue on patterns either Confused

DeadDoorpost · 30/09/2017 20:23

32 (33 weeks tomorrow) and I still don't feel any rhythm. But that may be because I'm asleep when he's awake so who knows. I just know that I can tell when he's not moved for a while.

MaryShelley1818 · 30/09/2017 20:25

28-30wks for a pattern. The 10 kicks per hour is very outdated advice so you don't need to worry about that.

I never did. Mine's been a bloody nightmare. I can totally relate to what idiot said about living at the hospital if I went in every time I wa worried 😩

But theoretically, it's about 28 weeks and it's common for babies to be most active in the evenings.

KarateKitten · 30/09/2017 20:55

Kicks tend not to be strong enough in all directions and positions to notice a pattern till sbout 28 weeks. I'm on my 4th baby and I'm not sure I've ever noticed a pattern, more that the kick are regular enough to never really leave me worrying.

runnerbean39 · 30/09/2017 21:14

Another one here for not being able to notice patterns I'm afraid! I'm 28 weeks now with anterior placenta. Noticed proper kicks from around 18 weeks but no particular times other than maybe bedtime! This last week everything felt more muffled/inside but still kicking so I wonder if she had moved directly behind the placenta or something and this was the cushioning effect. Also agree that so long as the kicks have been regular enough I've tried not to worry about patterns or anything else too much.

shushpenfold · 30/09/2017 21:17

The only pattern that I ever noticed was that as they got bigger, the kicks, pushes, punches and jumping legs this got harder and decidedly more uncomfortable! Still lovely though and am genuinely sad that I'll never experience it again. Xx

TLH0307 · 30/09/2017 21:33

Thank you everyone!! So as a general rule - as long as we feel something occasionally, we're ok haha! I sometimes think the more you read the more you bloody worry. Well good luck everyone with your babies! X

First child had a nice sensible reliable pattern. I have a nice, calm sensible child.

Second child kicks were erratic and totally bonkers. I now have an erratic and totally bonkers child.

Just sayin...

ShyOyster · 30/09/2017 21:40

I never ever noticed a pattern as much. However, all I needed to do was sit down/lie down or have a cold drink and DS would have started.

Winenight · 30/09/2017 22:08

I'm 26 weeks with anterior placenta and if I had followed the "count the kicks" advice I would be at hospital literally every week.

Phoned up my midwife at 24 weeks who just said, "oh, don't worry, it's normal to have sporadic movements" and said they won't do anything until 26 weeks anyway.

Some days it's a busy little bee, other days it's only a few subtle kicks, but if it dropped below that then I would go and get checked out.

I read somewhere that when you're moving around the movement lulls them to sleep so you'll have less movement on a busy day. I had a lazy day on the sofa yesterday eating biscuits and it was moving all over the place!

Jessiecat27 · 01/10/2017 00:29

33 weeks and no pattern! Likes to kick when my hand is on my bump but other than that, it's random! Just quite often! My midwife asked me and then said, if they're active at night for example they're more likely to wake up in the night around that time at first. Mines rarely going to sleep then if that's true haha

pacempercutiens · 01/10/2017 08:36

39 weeks and no real day to day pattern. She moves a lot when I'm sat down. I know what to do to make her move (cold drink / lie down on left side / relax on the sofa / chocolate + fizzy drink / in the bath), so if i'm worried i do one of those. Typically she does have periods where I can't get her to move, so have been in for monitoring and of course she starts to dance as soon as the machine is plugged in!!

I got told to monitor movements from about 26/28 weeks - I had a Kicks Count wristband from 20 weeks which I found really useful. I used it to track episodes of movement, and knew roughly what number she'd get to by a particular time of day.

I'd recommend reading Kick's Count website, they have loads of information on movements.

Oysterbabe · 01/10/2017 09:00

I hate it, it's so much pressure, like my baby might die because I've been too busy to pay attention or am monitoring wrong.
