"Morning" sickness - I feel so so bad. Did you take time off work?

I'm 6+2 today and the sickness is unbearable. I'm not actually vomiting but the nausea is insane. I had to sit in bed for two hours after waking up before I could get out of bed this morning.

I've been working from home today although I've done very little as I feel so awful I can do 5 minutes work then have to lie down.

I've been trying to eat but thought of food makes me feel awful.

I feel like I'm on the verge of throwing up the whole time and dizzy but haven't actually thrown up. I've had some diarrhoea though.

If this continues I genuinely don't see how I can go to work. It doesn't help that I have a 3 hour round trip commute into central London (think packed trains, long walk or cycle from station to office).

But there are a few other pregnant women at work and they've never had time off. They complain of "morning sickness" from time to time but I'm not sure they can have had it that badly as they're still functioning? I'm literally struggling to climb the stairs in my house I feel so faint.

Do I just need to "man up"? I'm really not sure I can.

I'm definitely not a skiver by the way: I only took 1 day off after being in an accident and all my colleagues were astounded I wasn't off for at least a week.

It's just making me feel so depressed. I'm sporty and was sure I'd continue my sports and stay fit into pregnancy but I can't even get to the postbox at the end of my road to post a letter.

Meanwhile my Facebook friend is posting pictures of her growing baby bump in her gym kit with captions like "feeling a bit rough so only a 10km run today" Sad

lots of people at my work do. have you tried anything to help?im not saying it will but worth a try.

i found fizzy lucozade and eating little and often made it manageable for me but i know it doesnt work for everyone.

abbsisspartacus · 29/09/2017 15:53

Try salty crackers? I spent awhile heaving in the loo my colleagues covered for me with the boss

abbsisspartacus · 29/09/2017 15:54

With my first pregnancy I could eat bananas in the morning and nothing else

I don't really like them that much

Bunnyfluffy · 29/09/2017 15:56

I've tried ginger biscuits and ginger tea but it's making me heave

Go to your GP for an antiemetic

Lemondrop99 · 29/09/2017 15:56

I couldn't get out of bed at 6 weeks and ended up signed off for 5 weeks! Some women suffer with sickness a lot more than others. There was no way I could have simply "manned up". I'd suggest talking to your GP about it.

It's my first pregnancy and I had no idea I would feel this bad!!

If you struggle to climb the stairs without feeling faint, walking/cycling a distance through London doesn't seem like a good idea. Maybe chat with your GP? I've only been able to work the days I can, about 2/3 - but self employed so more options. Try the HG group on here, just scroll down through pregnancy for the thread.

Bunnyfluffy · 29/09/2017 15:58

Is HG just actual vomiting? I feel like a fraud as I'm not actually vomiting but never felt this ill in my life (and I've been hospitalised with Salmonella poisoning in the past!)

Go to the gp. Antiemetics are safe in pregnancy; I managed ok with normal morning sickness in my first pregnancy but in my second the nausea and sickness had me stuck on the sofa until I got medication. They took the edge off so I could actually do things (such as look after my eldest) and worked within a few days

putdownyourphone · 29/09/2017 15:59

You might have HG. I had it and was signed off for 3 months. Look up hyperemsis. There's also a support thread on here somewhere.

Dinosauratemydaffodils · 29/09/2017 15:59

Yes. I was too sick to do my job properly. I had nausea, constant retching with some vomiting and dizziness. I worked for the Local Authority doing a job which involved lone home visiting and they were concerned about my safety with the dizziness plus some of the flats I had to go to smelt "interesting" and trying not to vomit on people proved almost impossible at points. However I wasn't planning on going back to work and in the end, just left early rather than take maternity leave as we could afford it and it seemed like the easiest solution.

Chewbecca · 29/09/2017 16:00

Ritz biscuits in the morning and beans on toast after work (crushing tiredness too) were all I could manage when I felt that way whilst commuting to London. It didn't last too long - hopefully yours will end soon too.

timeisnotaline · 29/09/2017 16:01

Everybody experiences pregnancy differently, don't assume those women have gone to work with the same symptoms you have! See if the gp will give you some medication, but you may have to be signed off for a period.

hopsalong · 29/09/2017 16:01

Ugh, it's so dire. I took time off work and spent a lot of days lying in bed feeling foul and vertiginous and vomiting sporadically and eating weird biscuits and salt and vinegar crisps. Completely neglected everything other than most basic responsibilities for several months.

There will be a point at which you feel somewhat better, even though it might not be at the magical turn of the second trimester. In my second pregnancy I was able to go to work normally from about 18 /20 weeks and to do some exercise then too.

Before that, I found it could pull it out if I had to, but it would be at the price of feeling even worse / like death warmed up the next day.

I was very opposed to taking medication because I didn't think I was being sick enough to have real hyperemesis. But I did in the end get cyclizine from my GP and it made a difference and improved my sleep. How are you sleeping?

There is a very useful and compassionate thread on here for people suffering with hyperemesis.

Chipsahoy · 29/09/2017 16:03

I had two days off sick and now I work when I can, going in late sometimes. Constant nausea and diarrhea, no vomiting I am 8 plus 2 and feeling tons better over the last few days.
Don't work if you are that I'll, you are entitled to rest when you are unwell and you cannot be penalised for work related sickness.
Rest.

Desperad0 · 29/09/2017 16:05

I had this both times but was also sick quite a lot. I just carried round a sick bag for on the train (just in case) and spent most of the day in the bathroom at work, I would even take my phone and email from there.
It was pretty horrendous but it will get better.
Hopefully you won't but I had it until 18/19 weeks- I couldn't have 3 months off sick so had to make it work!

TwinkleTwinkleLittleEtoile · 29/09/2017 16:11

I didn't take any time off, but I did leave early a few times. The nauseous feelings were constant, and although manageable early in the day, got too much by mid-afternoon sometimes. Thankfully my immediate manager was sympathetic.

MaMisled · 29/09/2017 16:19

With DD2, I was so nauseous from wk 6 to 12 that I slept through Christmas, despite a very excited 3 yr old (his Daddy and wider family gave him a wonderful time). I resigned from my part time job in wk 7. It was truly awful. I wasn't sick once but dizzy and billious 24 hrs a day.

I hope it soon passes for you op.

careerandfam · 29/09/2017 16:28

Hi, i'm the same and it's awful isn't it? As others have said, every woman seems to have a different experience, there's no way I could go into work, the thought of leaving the house is enough to fill me with dread!

Go to your Drs, I have been given anti sickness tablets. I wouldn't have considered them before, but once the sickness became so bad, I took them.

Get yourself signed off work and look after yourself x

CottonSock · 29/09/2017 16:29

Go off sick.. you can't work..

WrittenandGrown · 29/09/2017 16:42

I am 8 weeks have HG. Can't eat and can just about drink enough water, I am on my third different tablet and third week off work. If you can't work you can't work. Feel better soon.

GummyGoddess · 29/09/2017 16:50

I felt sick the entire time but was never really sick. The thing that helped was those travel sickness bands, they didn't take away the nausea but they made it bearable. You just need to make sure the button is in the correct place, mine kept moving down my wrist, and I had to wear both of them at once all day unless I was showering.

Bunnyfluffy · 29/09/2017 16:52

Thanks all and Flowers to everyone else suffering

I was hoping not to tell work until 12 week scan but looks like that's unrealistic.
