The old indegestion question!!

I know this topic has been re-hashed over and over, but I need some help!!
I've had really bad indegestion all afternoon, I've not eaten much and haven't had supper (can't face the thought). Have had two lots of gaviscon, and am now (at my mum's suggestion) trying cooled boiled water. Not convinced this will work though.

Does anyone else have any other ideas/inspiration? I'd be pretty much willing to try everything, it's really painful, my head is throbbing, I'm sweating and I've even tried sticking my fingers down my throat in desperation for some relief . Please Help!!

Midwife suggested peppermint tea (yuk! yuk! yuk!) but I couldn't drink it so can't say if it works or not. Maybe worth a try if you're brave then I am...

I always find some milk helps - it isn't great, but better than suffering, preferably full-fat if you can stomach that.

Hope you find a solution soon, and if you do, post it here for the rest of us!

A bowl of ice-cream always works for me, chocolate of course . 2 dessert spoons does the trick.

Water makes it worse.

OB suggested I try 'grazing' all day, rather than 3 square meals. Also, allow 2 hours for your stomach to empty before going to bed (but it's good to have the ice-cream just before bed).

Protein or fat-rich meals take longer to leave your stomach so space your protein out over the day.

Hope you're feeling better soon, it is miserable.

Gaviscon did not work for me so GP said to try Magnesium Trisilicate - you can buy it from any pharmacy - and it worked a treat! Also sleeping upright propped up with pillows. Peppermint tea also helped a little and camomile worked well too.

It is horrible isn't it? Makes hte whole preggie thing so miserable!

Thanks for your replies, I'm still here! Have tried some milk, to no avail. The rest of the stuff I don't have in the house at the moment but will give a go tomorrow when go out, think I might be making a trip to docs as well, as this has kept me up all night!!

My sis had bad indegestion and she had 2 bald babies!!

I went for an ante-natal appt yesterday and the registrar said there are about 12 other preparations they can use if gaviscon doesn't work... I would go to your gp to find out.

webmum · 15/07/2004 09:46

I always suffer from indigestion in early pregnancy and I found that Coca Cola really helped better than anything else!
I don't normally drink it, but I would have it with a very heavy meal as it does helpa lot.

Another option is to have lemon juice with hot water.

Twinkie · 15/07/2004 10:11

Am only 23 weeks and have had this for ages - did not get it till later with DD!!

GP gave me a prescription for Gaviscon Advanced which is much better than the regular gaviscon. He also gave me a prescription for Renetedine said it wasn't licensed for use during pregnancy but if symptoms get bad to use it (I can spit out the acid that has travelled up from my stomach!!).

Tonic Water sipped slowly helps too as does milk ice lollies - the chocolate ones always worked best with me!!

sweetkitty · 15/07/2004 11:15

Gaviscon and sipping loads of milk works for me. Why can't they invent a Gaviscon that tastes nice though???

Bibiboo · 15/07/2004 11:18

It's not the taste of Gaviscon that makes me retch, it's the consistency - minty man-jiuce I once described it as, much to DH's disgust!

JonahB · 15/07/2004 17:55

That's so funny. I've described it in exactly the same way to my DH, although not quite as polite.

I get terrible indigestion, and I rely on Rennie fruit tablets. Milk brings the indigestion on for me.

Flossam · 15/07/2004 18:23

Well I went to the pharmacy today as the docs were closed . Had perhaps the most helpful pharmacist ever, who would only communicate with me via the shop assistant. When I asked what I could take she reckoned the only thing was Gaviscon. So I asked for the magnesium stuff, gor some of that, some gaviscon advance (how much??!). I've also got ice cream, coke, peppermint tea, milkshake, mini milk can you tell I am getting desperate?!! Still not really any better, but haven't tried all the remedies yet. Thanks for all you advice.

Hi Flossam - I am suffering really badly too and find that tic tacs are good for being on the move, but am finding that Gaviscon works if I take it just before I go to bed.
Hope it gets better for you - I know that it can be awful.

Flossam,
I had a brilliant pregnancy .. except...I had
indigestion from the minute I was pregnant. Seriously. I had it the day after my period was due!!

Things I found bad:
Anything acidic: fuit juice etc
Anything fizzy: carbolic acid!!
Alcohol:???????
Garlic/Onions/Peppers/Cucumber
Drinking too much fluid.

Things that helped:
Glugging Gaviscon straight from the bottle. (Carried a bottle in my bag).
Dairy produce. Ate loads of mozarella/yoghurts and never gave me indigestion.
I cut down on my water intake and sipped slowly through the day as aversed to gulping pints of water (it was very hot last summer!)
Eat small and often.

Think that's it.....

costamum · 16/07/2004 10:12

Flossam - I had such bad heartburn during my last and this present pregnancy that it used to make me sick! This time round I discovered eating Fuji apples in the evening really helped - honestly! It had to be of the Fuji variety though! One in the evening after a light meal usually let me have a decent nights sleep! Why not give it a try and see if it works for you too!

vivie · 16/07/2004 13:39

a teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda in a small glass of water can help, but I didn't find it as effective as Gaviscon.

Cha · 16/07/2004 14:50

You have my sympathies - I had the most awful heartburn for the whole 40 weeks of both my horrendous pregnancies - I second everyone's advice re eating supper early (I found at least four hours before bedtime was the best) and not eating too many fatty / acidic things. Pizzas did it for me - tomatoes and cheese, a devastating combination.

One thing people have not mentioned and that I found to be great was fresh pinapple. Tinned or juice doesn't work, has to be fresh. I found out about it in an alternative therapy book for pregnancy, said it was 'infallible' - and it was. Tastes much nicer than Gaviscon too - though I must admit, Gaviscon was the only thing that really, really worked for me. I too would swig it liberally from the bottle and carried it about with me wherever I went. Felt quite guilty about how much I was taking until my GP told me she had kept one under her desk during both her pregnancies and would take vast drafts of it between patients...

cori · 16/07/2004 15:05

I had really bad indegestion for the last 3 months. Try gaviscon extra strength. That helped a lot more than the regular ones. Never went anywhere without Rennies. Dont sleep lying down. And for some reason coke was the only thing i could drink that didnt give me indgestion.

Flossam · 16/07/2004 15:45

Hi Cha, interesting you should say that, I had Pizza on tuesday night, the night before this all started!! I often wondered whether I had perhaps overindulged in that a little too close to bedtime! I shall aviod aviod aviod from now... the past couple of days have been too horrible

My indegestion was a nightmare when i was pregnant and also relied on gaviscon and 4 pts of milk a day!
My dh often joked I was having a cow !!!

Twinkie · 16/07/2004 16:02

Cha

Hoorah thought at last another suggestion that might taste nice - but I am allergic to fresh pineapple no matter how yummy it is!!
