As I'm having a Hewitt induced rant about childbirth elsewhere, I thought I'd try a fluffier thread here.

I was born at home during the world cup in 1966 (obviously a good year )

My dad was watching TV downstairs and my mum was upstairs with the MW. He came upstairs between goals to check on 'things.'

To be fair to my dad, this was normal male behaviour for the time and I was the third child and it was a good match. It wasn't the final, though, so with hindsight, maybe he should have been a bit more interested?

After I was born they hung a pink sheet out of the window to let the neighbours know that I was a girl.

Sorry, just to be clear - Mum had the Guinness not me.

I was born in 1983 in Hannover, Germany in a British military hospital as my dad was in the army posted out there. Was born at 12 mins to midnight. No idea what pain relief my mum had. Was about 7 1/2 lbs.

I was born in a maternity hospital - a footling breech . It was 1979 so my dad was there too.

Bubble99 - my DS2 was born during the 2006 world cup on the day that England went out. DH was a bit gutted when the anaesthetist made him switch it off (TV in the delivery room) so that he could concentrate to do my epidural!

Queens Charlottes hospital in London, 1975.

Provincial French town, 1969, a clinic, with the nice doctor (male) who delivered my brother and me, and 3 of my cousins. Dad was outside the room somewhere. Mum had been coached in ?Lamaze breathing techniques and was doing really well (she says) until what appeared was my foot, so they put her under general anaesthetic (she fought the mask off but they plonked it on her face). Breastfeeding - in fact a woman died in labour the same night and all the new mums were asked to donate a bit of colostrum.

Me (1978) - 2 weeks overdue, emergency cs day after her FIL died. Attached to monitor - no trace. Nurse hits monitor repeatedly 'It has to warm up' Dr comes in - one look at no trace, emergency cs under general. Vertical scar on tummy - still looks hideous. Recently a doctor told her it looked like it had been done by a butcher(!!)

Sister - In the middle of Handsworth riots (1981). Got to hospital - all locked and barricaded. Eventually got in via service entrance, up in service lift. Forceps. Nurse says - 'Ooh you'll do it all on your own next time.' Mom Not a chance.
