As I'm having a Hewitt induced rant about childbirth elsewhere, I thought I'd try a fluffier thread here.

I was born at home during the world cup in 1966 (obviously a good year )

My dad was watching TV downstairs and my mum was upstairs with the MW. He came upstairs between goals to check on 'things.'

To be fair to my dad, this was normal male behaviour for the time and I was the third child and it was a good match. It wasn't the final, though, so with hindsight, maybe he should have been a bit more interested?

After I was born they hung a pink sheet out of the window to let the neighbours know that I was a girl.

Aaah thats lovely about the sheet.

I was born in St Marys ward in my local hospital in 1978.
I'm a twin and was a forceps delivery. No pain relief.

Mums waters broke on her bed. Dad finished shaving and took her to hospital. He went home after a while for a rest and some food!!

They called him back in under orders from Mum.

I went home a week before my twin sister wrapped in a yellow blanket. In the video (cine film) of me coming into the house (where mum and dad still live now) I look just like dd when she was born wrapped in her yellow blanket.

Twin sis came home when she'd reached 5 lb.

We went to the hospital nursery every night for the 10 days we were in hospital.

princessmelTingChoccyEggs · 04/04/2007 22:15

Oh yeah I was born at 11.47 and my sister was born and 11.44am.

Bubble99 · 04/04/2007 22:17

PrincessMel. Do you pull the 'big sister' routine with your twin?

I was born in hospital, was supposed to be an elective C.section but was an emergency c section due to my sister putting her head through the greenhouse (she was riding my brothers motorbike at the time, oh and she was 12)!!! I was 6 weeks early.

PavlovtheCatthatgottheCremeEgg · 04/04/2007 22:21

Kbear - its a block of flats now! It was turned into old peoples home, then knocked down completely and rebuilt, I beleive.

Funny that tho, my best friend at school was born there too, but like two weeks before me!
Do you still live nearby? I moved to Devon as an adult.

Oh, Can I do a post on behalf of my DD.
Born 1st July 2006 at Derriford Hosp maternity ward at 11:47pm, after 18 hours labour and after England got knocked out of world cup. DP watched it whilst timing my contractions, had to kick out friends at half time, LOL! stayed at home until 7cm dilated.

IdrisTheDragon · 04/04/2007 22:22

I was born in hospital in 1975. My mum was induced and they thought she was more dilated than she was and so broke her waters.

I'm not sure whether my dad was around at all in the hospital - I know my mum said it was horrible and she was on her own. I don't think my dad would have enjoyed being there, but I know he wasn't encouraged/allowed to be.

I think the hospital phoned him up when I was born. Very different from DS and DD being born (DH very much there with me).

chocolateface · 04/04/2007 22:33

I was born at home in 1972. According to my mother, I was breech and they turned me while she was in labour. I'm not sure if this is actually possible.

Bubble99 · 04/04/2007 22:36

I think it is, chocolateface. I've heard of it being done before labour. Not sure how, though.

My mum's waters broke while she was having her hair done in the afternoon. My dad took her to the hospital after tea. Mum says she was given some drug to make her sleep? She has no idea what it was Then woke up to be told to push.

Dad found outby phoning the hospital in the morning from the pay phone down the road.

We stayed in hospital for 10 days that was what everyone else did too.

1967

1969, Chase Farm Hospital, Enfield late afternoon.

Mum told dad that she was in labour (I was no 2, she had problems with my Brother) he went to work, it was a Saturday so only a half day, then he watched a film and would only take her to hospital after it had finished.

Olissa · 05/04/2007 01:02

Aberdeen maternity hospital, 1979.
I was an undiagnosed breech and have still not been forgiven. Was pulled out with some forceps my mum tells me they aren't allowed to use any more (she was a midwife!) Dad was thrown out and thought one or both of us was dying.

Mum went on to deliver my (also breech) sister vaginally too, but she knew about that one in advance.

Sister number 2 was the right way up!

wotsits · 05/04/2007 03:34

Assunta Hospital in Malaysia, in 1970. In those days there were still nuns arounds, and the nurses wore highly starched headdresses, and they used glass bottles to feed babies.
Dad dropped Mum off at the hospital (he's very squeamish), forgot to kiss her goodbye, went home to watch golf on TV with his friends, and only turned up to check on his wife when I was 4 hours old. My mother has still not forgiven him

deasterjags · 05/04/2007 07:08

Trafford General. 1974.

Hideous birth. Attending doctor was pissed(there was something going on in the Footie).

Dad was absent (in the pub getting pissed).

Mum gave birth and was told she had to give the registrar a name there and then. She was so zonked after the birth that she forgot to give them my second name (Ali).

Dad rolled in sometime the next day to see me .

(Some things never change )

St Marys Hospital 1975,Manchester

in an operating theatre , a premature twin, born feet first , with my sister following 10 minutes later face up!

40 odd people in the room, mum still doesn;t like to talk about it....!

juuule · 05/04/2007 08:28

Born in hospital by c-section.

eidsvold · 05/04/2007 08:35

born in the same hospital as dd2 and dd3 - brisbane - vaginal birth. Dad and doc made it by the time it was all over.

FlossALump · 05/04/2007 08:41

Hospital in 1980. No idea if my Dad was there or not, I think I can recall my mum saying he was but no good, which would be about right really. I was born by emergency section as my head was, well a little large. I weighed 10lb 6. So you have to feel for my poor mum a bit. I was the only child too...

betsycoe · 05/04/2007 09:24

December 19th 1979 at St James's in Leeds. Mum had a crash ceasarean and had to have a general anasthetic. My Dad wasn't allowed in the room as it all happened so quickly. My Mum got to see me 18 hours later after she had recovered from the Op.

She says that it was the best and worst experience of her life!

madmumNika · 05/04/2007 09:45

I was born naturally in hospital, in Salisbury in 1979. My Mum had a 48hr labour though and did not enjoy having a birth at hospital ("laid on her back with her legs in stirrups" to quote!). My Dad is a musician and couldn't make it back in time for the birth, he was busy playing Saint-Saëns' Symphony No.3 (The Organ)!! I weighed 6lb 4oz and was healthy. My Mum went on to have my sister at home 20 months later- she didn't even tell her GP she was pregnant (as didn't want to end up in hospital again) and had no help apart from a good friend- thankfully everything was fine!! I slept through it apparently!!

ghosty · 05/04/2007 10:02

Johannesburg 1970. In a maternity hospital run by nuns. 4th baby in less than 4 years so details a little bit hazy. Mum was fed up with being pg so on due date asked doc to break waters which he did. Was born next day. Got a bit stuck during delivery (Doctor apparently said, "This one's got broad shoulders, must be a boy")
Same Doctor delivered all of us. Was a family friend (my mum was a midwife).

tinasparkle79 · 05/04/2007 10:59

Derby City Hospital 1979 - mum wasn't allowed to give birth in the maternity home as they considered her old and a risk (she was 30 - how things change!). My dad was there and his thumbs were squeezed so hard they have never recovered! I popped out in time for brekkie.

ScottishThistle · 05/04/2007 11:06

Hospital in Scotland 17/12/72, forceps delivery at 11:15pm after many hours of pushing!...I was obviously trying to hang on til the next day, hate odd numbers!

expatinscotland · 05/04/2007 11:06

Hermann Memorial Hospital, Houston, TX, 1971.

Via planned csection.

My elder sister was breech and as the incision they used to use for csection was vertical, it was 'once a csection, always a csection'.
