Would you get the harmony test if this was your screening result?

Posted about this in my antenatal club so apologies if you've already seen and advised but was just looking for some opinions really.
Got our screening test back today and although we are deemed low risk the downs risk number was a lot lower than expected - 1 out of 233.

I'm 32 and my bmi is 27 so i am a bit overweight but i was hoping it would be in the thousands.

Don't get me wrong i know people who have had high risk scores probably would have been delighted with our result but i can't help but worry. Considering harmony test as it seems that it's more accurate but not sure if im overthinking and being silly? Just wanted opinions really.

It really depends on what you'd do with the results. If it would change your outcome (i.e. You'd consider a termination) then worth doing. If you will go ahead anyway, maybe not. We had a 1 in 150 with my son. I was 37, BMI of 22, non-smoker etc but for some reason our risk factor was higher. We didn't go for any additional tests because unless they told us at the scan there was a fatal defect, we had decided to proceed whatever the outcome. DS is now 2.5, the life of the party and absolutely fine.

Was the nuchal measurement within normal parameters? Nasal bone visible?

whyhastherumgone · 12/09/2017 20:41

Nuchal measurement was within normal parameters 0.9mm and she pointed out eye socket and nose although didn't specifically say she could see the nasal bone but on the report it says that all "feral structures" were found to be within the guidelines

Fetal not feral!

Get the test if it will reassure you. I did the test when I had similar odds. All was well but it was wonderful to be sure.

Lemondrop99 · 12/09/2017 20:45

Honestly, I wouldn't panic. Your bloods are in the low risk and the scan measurements are normal. However, if it's going to drive you crazy with worry, maybe have it for your own peace of mind. As mentioned above, it's also worth considering whether the outcome of the test would affect your actions regarding continuing the pregnancy or not.

BertieBotts · 12/09/2017 20:48

Is it covered? Harmony test is a blood test and non invasive so yes I think I would get it if offered. Would be much less keen on amniocentesis.

whyhastherumgone · 12/09/2017 21:02

What do you mean by is it covered @bertiebotts? Sorry, tiredness brain fog taking over!

Thank you @Lemondrop99 and @Atrociouscircumstance for taking the time to reply :)

I had the harmony at 10 weeks and didn't have the NHS screening because I knew I'd struggle with getting a "low risk" result that didn't feel low risk enough to me if you see what I mean. I was much happier with the harmony result. If you can afford it then I'd go for it personally.

BertieBotts · 12/09/2017 21:15

I mean is it offered on the NHS or are you talking about having it done privately?

I'm not living in the UK any more so I'm not sure with the newer tests what's offered :)

whyhastherumgone · 12/09/2017 21:24

Thanks @sunshinegirl82 it's really good to get different perspectives.

Ah thought so @BertieBotts but just wanted to check - we'd have to pay, but we are lucky enough to have the funds that we could do it if we decided we wanted to.

I also had harmony and then didn't bother with NHS screening. This was for #4: I'd had NHS screening for the others and never found it entirely reassuring or dependable so I wanted a definitive answer this time around. We wouldn't have terminated other than for fatal conditions, but I wanted to be prepared should the baby have needed extra support.

There are arguments against having an amnio (risk of miscarriage) but i can't see any against having the harmony test. If you can afford it, I absolutely would.

whyhastherumgone · 12/09/2017 21:29

Thanks @ricepolo I think I'm leaning towards getting it.
Now I've had the initial concern over the number, I know it's going to be a brainworm that won't go away.

Is Harmony the one where you can also find out the gender by the way? Just curious, have read up about so many things today they're all blurring into one - that would obviously not be the main reason we would get it!

OP posts:
Sunshinegirl82 · 12/09/2017 21:33

Yes you can find out the gender with the harmony. We knew DS was a boy at 11 weeks!

whyhastherumgone · 12/09/2017 21:37

Oh wow, and congrats :)
I think I'm definitely leaning towards getting it - going to phone up tomorrow and speak to them I think.

Did it take you long to get your results do you remember? Sorry for all the questions!

I'm 33, high BMI and I'm higher risk, our result was 1:110. We considered harmony and amino/CVS but decided against doing anything. I couldn't stand the stress of waiting for the harmony result and wouldn't have amino because of the miscarriage risk (I've had two mc previously). We wouldn't terminate if it was Downs and 1:110 is still a 99.99% chance of everything being fine so we're carrying on as normal. If it is Downs then we'll cross that bridge when we come to it. I had 20 week scan this week and everything was normal, so I think we'll probably be fine and to be honest I've pretty much forgotten now that I'm higher risk.

JW13 · 12/09/2017 21:47

I had the harmony test at about 10 weeks and got the results back in a week (test on Saturday and results on the following Friday). I had heard results would take 2 weeks but I had it done at the Portland and somebody told me they have a special relationship with the testing company so they get the results more quickly (not sure if that's true).

And yes you can find out the sex if you want to so we've known since then we were having a boy (I don't like surprises much) Grin

whyhastherumgone · 12/09/2017 21:53

ooh what's the Portland actually like @JW13?
Thanks - I don't much like surprises either! I probably seem a bit silly and hysterical as I've technically been deemed low risk, but it's like a little annoying brainworm that won't go away now I know that most of my friends got a result of 1 in the thousands.
Thanks to everyone taking the time to reply, I really appreciate it

Approx 1 week for us too. A friend recently had the test Monday and results that Friday.

whyhastherumgone · 12/09/2017 22:10

Thank you @sunshinegirl82, really helpful

@Sunshinegirl82 the Portland was actually surprisingly normal - although we were only in the screening bit not the main hospital. I'm with Kings on the NHS generally and the fetal medicine unit there is incredible - nicer and more high-tech than the Portland. Shock Although I think the part where you actually give birth won't be quite as plush as the Portland - no afternoon tea with champagne!!!

JW13 · 12/09/2017 23:02

Sorry - username fail! I meant @whyhastherumgone

NinaMarieP · 12/09/2017 23:09

I probably would get a non invasive test done if I had your numbers and the money.

I considered it when my results came back at 1in34 (instead of 800 for my age) but the NHS offered me a CVS (with a definitive answer) in three days from us finding out that result, and then we had our CVS results in 28 hours.

I'm not sure I'd have the NHS screening again to be honest, it's such a rough predictor.

Given that a CVS is invasive I can understand my trust only offers it if they deem you high risk, I think the cut off was 1 in 150, but other trusts might have it as 1 in 100 or 1 in 200 and so on.

233 isn't awful and I'd not have gone through a CVS for it but a blood test? I might well have.

Good luck either way.

NinaMarieP · 12/09/2017 23:10

Oh and the reason we wanted to know was just so we could be prepared. So you don't only have to have it if you would make a decision based on the results.
