Would you get the harmony test if this was your screening result?

Posted about this in my antenatal club so apologies if you've already seen and advised but was just looking for some opinions really.
Got our screening test back today and although we are deemed low risk the downs risk number was a lot lower than expected - 1 out of 233.

I'm 32 and my bmi is 27 so i am a bit overweight but i was hoping it would be in the thousands.

Don't get me wrong i know people who have had high risk scores probably would have been delighted with our result but i can't help but worry. Considering harmony test as it seems that it's more accurate but not sure if im overthinking and being silly? Just wanted opinions really.

Interesting @jw13 i watched the tv documentary about the portland so I had visions of you in the waiting room quaffing champagne and eclairs Grin

Thanks @ninamariep it's so useful to hear other peoples' experiences and opinions instead of sitting here overthinking and panicking

I got the Harmony and declined the NHS testing. I'd definitely do it again if we decide to have another child too. Our results were back within about a week which is pretty standard for all clinics.

AccrualIntentions · 13/09/2017 07:57

I would get it, because if I didn't I think it would worry me through the rest of the pregnancy. Before I got my NT results back I'd already decided I'd get it if the risk was anything higher than 1/1000 - I don't know why I didn't just get it in the first place and skip the NHS testing tbh.

@Anutteridiot oh that's good to know - I read on my scan report that if you have a higher BMI it can be harder to get readings so just assumed that meant it made your risk higher, but now I think about it, none of the readings at the scan were flagged. Think I'm going to speak to the midwife today to see if they can give me any info on what raised my risk, and I'm also going to speak to my uncle who's an antenatal/fertility specialist - then probably just going to book the Harmony.

@accrualintentions I think I'm going to be the same - just worrying the whole time. Half wished I'd skipped the NHS testing now and just got the Harmony.

Just booked the Harmony for Friday :) Thanks for all your advice. I feel better already just for having booked it.

We're having the harmony test done in a couple of weeks, prior to the NHS screening, so I'd say certainly go for it!

Sunshinegirl82 · 13/09/2017 10:39

I think that's a good decision OP. Pregnancy is anxiety inducing enough so anything you can do to reduce that is a good move as far as I'm concerned! I hope all goes well for you.

whyhastherumgone · 13/09/2017 10:49

Thank you @sunshinegirl82 I'm hoping it's a good experience and I can post back here with happy results in a few weeks.

Good luck for your Harmony @wineandtiramisu :)

Nervous now tomorrow is getting closer! if you have any spare good luck vibes send them this way :)

The test itself is fine so try not to worry too much about that. I'd just keep as busy as possible over the next few weeks and focus on how good it will feel to have a definitive answer. Best of luck!

Anatidae · 15/09/2017 09:25

The bmi thing - bmi is used to calibrate the bloods - has no bearing on chance of downs

I'd get the nipt. Anxiety is awful.

whyhastherumgone · 15/09/2017 17:43

thanks for all the advice everyone really glad i went.
Fetal medical centre was amazing and the scan was so thorough. Their combined screening brought me down to 1:7000 and i now know why my nhs screening was such a low number - i have low pap-a hormone in my blood :(
i hadn't heard of it but it's apparently linked to growth issues or can be - so going to speak to my midwife on monday as extra scans are recommended. Replaced one worry with another as is always the way!

FEeling relieved with my new score though and am hopeful that harmony will come back low risk too.

I'm glad you had a positive experience of fmc, they are great there! Try not to worry about the low Papp A. It seems relatively common and if they know about it they can monitor you a bit more closely to make sure all is well. Definitely speak to your midwife and I'm sure she can reassure you.

whyhastherumgone · 15/09/2017 20:41

Thanks @sunshinegirl82 :) I probably sound neurotic but I had a missed miscarriage last year at nine weeks, and have done so well not to freak out this time - ironically it's hit me at the time I thought I would be even more chilled.

And thanks for pointing out it's common - I've talked myself down now and am just enjoying the news that the scan was good, baby was only a day behind and misbehaving massively and our first set of tests look great.

This thread has been such a help, so thank you.

Not at all, I was very anxious throughout my pregnancy, it's a super anxious time. It's the reason why I think it's best to do whatever you can to feel less anxious! Fingers crossed for you OP, I'm sure you and baby will be absolutely fine.

TheVoiceOfTreason · 16/09/2017 16:53

We pretty much decided to get ours whatever the results of the combined screening. I'm late 30s, my initial risk for Downs was low anyway, but we decided £300 for peace of mind was well worth paying. It's now 1/25000 or 1/50000 each for all three of the conditions they screen for. So I'd say it's worth doing, but I'm the sort of person who always wants as much information about everything as possible.
