Things to eat with heartburn

I have the worst heartburn ever.
I was up all bloody night long 1.30-5am and I'm dying again at work today.
I've tried a banana and a mug of warm full fat milk, anyone else got any tips?

A couple of sips of semi-skimmed milk usually makes me feel a little better. Watermelon usually helps cool things down too, but not very filling!

ItchyFoot · 05/09/2017 12:28

Gaviscon straight from the bottle!

GlitteryFluff · 05/09/2017 12:28

I have no advice but I'm struggling with heartburn too.

ChipShopGherkin · 05/09/2017 12:33

Go to your GP and get prescribed some Omprazanole.

FeedMyFaceWithBattenberg · 05/09/2017 12:45

I'm taking ranitidine, and gaviscon to no avail!

Bananas made me worse. I had to carb load before bed and suck on sugar free polos throughout the night. Gaviscon liquid. took me 6 months to get a prescription for anything decent after crying at 4 different healthcare people and then I gave birth two days later!!! Keeping full constantly helped - did not help the size of my arse though it has to be said!!!

kshaw · 05/09/2017 12:46

If one dr/midwife asked me 'have you tried gaviscon' I was ready to punch someone!!!

littlepinkgiraffe · 05/09/2017 12:49

I was recommended love hearts. Something to do with the chalky texture.

Ikabod · 05/09/2017 12:51

Ginger in any form. Pukka do a three-ginger tea. You can also get ginger sweets from Holland & Barratt. When things get tough, 1/2 teaspoon of bicarb in about 150ml water. It's vile but always works.

Avoid milk especially if full fat. It feels soothing going down but increases acid production and I think can relax the sphincter more. I find lots of water helps dilute the acid so it burns less and the acid inhibitors work great in the longer term (you'll need a prescription though).

Cold water and mango

Littlecaf · 05/09/2017 13:27

Gaviscon. I think I've lived off it. I've ignored the advice about spicy food, fat etc as I get it with a dry bit of toast so I might as well eat what I want and take the Gaviscon. Four Action tablets are the best.

Littlecaf · 05/09/2017 13:27

Double not four

rizlett · 05/09/2017 13:29

A huge spoon of honey.

AcornToOak · 05/09/2017 13:56

Honeydew melon and gaviscon by the bottle were the only things that helped me through both of my pregnancies, i dont think they is much unmedicated that will really provide much relief tho tbh

krakentoast · 05/09/2017 19:40

Get omeprazole from your GP. Bypass the midwife.

Also wrt the Gaviscon, make sure you've got the double action liquid, drink it straight from the bottle, and fuck the dosing guidelines. Waste no time at all with the tablets. Just drink as much of the double action liquid as you can until the pain stops. It's not possible to overdose on it so go for your life.

I've found that it helps not to drink any fizzy drinks or fruit juice, and I avoid tomatoes and spicy foods, but tbh I get it with whatever I eat now at 35 weeks. Weirdly the only thing I've eaten lately that didn't seem to make it worse was a bacon sandwich. God knows why.

ForgetAboutSleep · 05/09/2017 22:32

As PP have said Gaviscon double action straight from the bottle - try to get a prescription for it though as its £11 a bottle and I was going through about 2 a week at least. Next time I will be straight down the doctors asking for it on repeat prescription! haha

dippypanda · 06/09/2017 07:31

Peptic liquid (aniseed) flavour helped me, anything peppermint or minty made it worse, fruit flavoured antacids also worked a treat. Ask the pharmacist about the peptic liquid.
Avoid eating large amounts, avoid not eating too, my heartburn is worse if I do not have something every 2-3 hours to the point where water even hurts. Flowers

luch123 · 07/09/2017 10:08

SODA WATER!! its horrible, but drink it neat and it will work wonders ladies :)

lljkk · 07/09/2017 10:12

Little and often, quick digesting stuff like milk or banana (together those are just about nutritionally complete, too).

lljkk · 07/09/2017 10:13

oops... I tell a lie. Forgot about iron, bananas & milk won't provide iron. Floradix??

RubyWinterstorm · 07/09/2017 10:13

Milk soothes it temporarily, but then makes your stomach proud more acid so it's a short term fix

yoghurt may be better.

I ended up avoiding dairy and bread, the worst thing about bread is the yeast. If you want to eat bread, make sure it is very stale and/or toasted as not too yeasty.

Rice, steamed veg, chicken, broth, poached fish etc are all easily digestible. Avoid dairy/bread/greasy food/meat/rich food

But..... best of all, see the GP, I had such bad heartburn my oesophagus was burning away and was referred to a gastroenterologist

lljkk · 07/09/2017 10:19

Maybe I'm lucky that I became lactose intolerant in pregnancy ,then, perhaps my HB would have been much worse if I could have had milk products.

Yogurt... egads. That was the most guaranteed food to make me puke when pgrs.

Liquid non-dairy chocolate? May as well enjoy it going down, at least. Hang in there. x

Mugglenet · 11/09/2017 15:49

Loveheart sweets.... work a treat 👌

MisguidedAngel · 11/09/2017 15:55

Not during pregnancy, but I had terrible heartburn after I came out of hospital after 3 months on a very bland diet. Everything upset me. What worked for me was porridge.
