5 weeks and spotting

Hi all, I'm feeling so sick with worry and just looking for some good news stories to keep my spirits up as I know this could go either way.

I'm five weeks pregnant and have had some spotting this evening. It was quite light and there doesn't seem to be more of it at the moment but I also have cramps.

DP offered to take me to a&e this evening but I thought it would be better to wait til morning and call the EPU. I also have a GP appt booked anyway tomorrow morning so depending what EPU say I might go for that too.

Has anyone had spotting/bleeding at this stage which turned out to be fine?

Yep! I had a massive panic and went to the GP that morning who sent me straight to EPU.

They booked me in for a scan the following week, which I've attached. The spotting stopped after 24 hours. It was brown at first and light pink just before it stopped.

I'm now 30 weeks with no issues since. Thinking of you: I know it's worrying.

I should add: spotting is really, really common. If I had my time over again, I wouldn't bother going to the GP/ EPU because ultimately, if it was a miscarriage, there is nothing they can do. They scheduled the in case it was an ectopic pregnancy but having done some research, I didn't have any symptoms to suggest it would be. It was quite a tense week's wait for the scan, which I ultimately didn't need.

Littlelouse · 31/08/2017 00:26

The scan* in case.

It happened to me at a similar time, what seemed like a flood on the train home from work. Very worrying, weekend of googling and finding nothing helpful, until I had a scan the following week. However, pregnancy thereafter was straight forward and I had two healthy twins. I hope all goes well for you

SpunBodgeSquarepants · 31/08/2017 00:33

With my first pregnancy I spotted quite heavily between 5 and 6 weeks. Rest of the pregnancy was textbook and DS is now 3.5!

My second pregnancy I had no spotting at all. Turned out to be a missed miscarriage and had to have an ERPC at what should have been 16 weeks.

Just goes to show that you never know what might happen, but spotting at this stage is very common as the embryo buries further into the lining of your uterus. All my fingers and toes crossed for you OP, I'm sure you'll be fine x

tumpymummy · 31/08/2017 00:39

I had spotting at 5-6 weeks with both my kids. It's really worrying at the time, but turned out fine in my case. Both have now grown in to tall teenager. It's normal to worry but hopefully the EPU can put yr mind at rest tomorrow.

katiegd · 31/08/2017 00:41

Thanks all, you're reassuring me! It is only brown bleeding which sounds like it's less of a warning sign than red. This is my first pregnancy and it has taken us a while to get here so I'm just so anxious it'll all go wrong.

How are you doing today @katiegd? Really hope the spotting has stopped now.

sonlypuppyfat · 31/08/2017 07:02

I had the nasty brown blood, like I was going rusty, DS is 18 now

harrietm87 · 31/08/2017 07:15

I had this at 4-5 weeks (I'm 8 weeks now). I've had 3 mcs so was terrified, but had an early scan at 5+5 and everything was fine. I had cramping and brown blood, and one afternoon of a bit of red blood. I did lots of googling and though it can be a sign of bad news, it seems to be really common. Good luck!

katiegd · 31/08/2017 08:13

No more blood since yesterday, but still had pretty persistent (but mild) cramps all night. Also I don't know if it means anything but my boobs had been getting progressively more painful until yesterday and that seems to have tailed off a bit as well. Worrying that means my hormone levels are dropping off.

I guess there is nothing I can do but wait. Decided against calling EPU as on further research it looks like you need a GP referral anyway. Will see GP this morning and go from there.

Thanks for all your support, it is so helpful.

Good luck katie. Fwiw nothing you've said so far would be a particular worry. Symptoms come and go all the time, especially in the early stages (I've never had proper consistent symptoms til 6+w). Cramps also totally normal, it's just baby bedding in, things stretching, etc etc. As long as they're not super painful and/or accompanied by bleeding, they're actually a good sign imo (only time I've had no cramps was one of my mmc). And spotting is also totally fine more often than not, I've had it with both my healthy pregnancies (plus a huge bleed with clots with my second!) and all was ok.
Hope the GP is helpful and things work out for you. Try not to worry too much Flowers (easier said than done I know!)

katiegd · 31/08/2017 09:56

GP was nice and has referred me to EPU for a scan. The earliest they could see me was Monday morning. Although it feels like a long time to wait, they're more likely to be able to tell what's going on then anyway.

She said that spotting was sometimes down to dehydration and that it may or may not mean anything.

Four long days to wait.

Feeling slightly less anxious now as no more spotting since last night and boobs are back to hurting. Just a waiting game til Monday now.

I'm in the same boat Katie . I found out I was pregnant a few days ago and now spotting but I have no pains or aches. And I can only see a doctor on the 18th sep as they are fully booked.
Hope everything goes ok for you xx

Littlelouse · 31/08/2017 23:50

@Ilovechocolate111 if you have spotting, your GP has to see you the same day. When I did, I called NHS direct and asked them what I should do and they said that I needed to call my GP and request an appointment within an hour.

Ring your GP back tomorrow and tell them you need to be seen before the weekend.

Mrstobe90 · 01/09/2017 01:35

Hi, I had spotting and cramps on and off between 5 and 9 weeks. It was always very light pink and midwife said it's usually nothing to worry about.
I'm currently 16 weeks :)

As a rule of thumb, if it's pale pink of brown, in most cases it's fine but if it's bright red, speak to a doctor asap xx

Ilovechocolate111 · 01/09/2017 09:38

My doctor said that I'm not priority as it's so early on and the only time they got free is the 18th.
My gp is an arse. When I had my last mc I was told someone will come out to my house and check me over but that never happen I kept ringing them up but all I got was be patient the doctor is a very busy man. So I have given up on gp's xx

katiegd · 02/09/2017 08:12

@Ilovechocolate111 that sound so awful! Sorry you're in this situation. Sounds like they're talking crap - they should always check you out with any bleeding in case it's ectopic as that can be really dangerous. How are you doing today?

I've had no more spotting and my sore boobs have returned (with the addition of increasing nausea), so I'm feeling reassured. Will still feel scared on Monday for scan but reassured for the moment.

Thanks so much for all your support and reassurance! Will let you know how scan goes on Monday.

@Ilovechocolate111 is there any way of registering with another practice? (I know not possible in some areas).

OP posts:
DragonsandDungeons · 02/09/2017 08:15

Katie I had this with my son. Several times. He was fine! I was told afterwards that some women just bleed during pregnancy.

I also have miscarried and I bled more with my healthy pregnancy than that one, if that helps.

orangeowls · 02/09/2017 08:16

I had three episodes of bleeding throughout my pregnancy, they never discovered why but my I'm currently feeding my LO, 5 months old now Smile

Also cramping early on is very normal. Good luck for Monday x

Ilovechocolate111 · 02/09/2017 10:09

I can't change Gps as you have to be registered with the closes one.
I'm bleeding alot bright red and filled a pad during the night.
I have no cramps or aches. I haven't passed any clots (that I've noticed) Just stringy gooey discharge .
The other mcs were never like this. Previously I bled bright red and passed clots within hours with server pains... And then went to a normal period type bleed. Nothing's open till monday (day before kids go to school Confused)
I have no idea what's going on.

Ilovechocolate111 · 02/09/2017 10:10

Katie I hope everything goes alright for you. I pray that it's all good.
Let me know how Monday goes. My prayers and thoughts are with you xx

katiegd · 02/09/2017 14:11

Thanks all.

@Ilovechocolate111 my thoughts are with you too...it sounds like a really stressful situation - bleeding but not being able to get it checked out. As it's got worse can you call GP again for advice? Or 111?

I guess I don't know how quickly my GP would have seen me as I conveniently had my initial appointment with them booked for the morning after the spotting, so just used that. She was very good though and called EPU straight away to book for for the scan.
