How early did your heartburn/reflux start?

In my last pregnancy I had terrible constant heartburn from about 7 months on that galviston didn't make a dent in.

Now I'm about 9/10 weeks with my second and I'm already having to sleep propped up on a pillow tower and eat antacids like sweeties.

I'm hoping to ring the Dr tomorrow and get some help because over the counter remedies aren't working at all. Has anybody been prescribed anything that works this early?

This may actually drive me to madness if it lasts the whole pregnancy.

Nexium will help. Liquid mint gaviscon, cold from the fridge, is also lovely. Try to limit sugar intake. Don't drink too much water at a time. Mine was bad and hit seriously around 20 weeks but tbh I've been pretty clear for the last while until about a week ago and it's back again (38 weeks) . Think I'm just full up at this stage. I think it's the hormones at the start and then the space in your abdomen!

2ndTimeMother · 30/08/2017 05:00

I'm currently pregnant with my 2nd (33wks) & like you I had heartburn very bad from around 6months with my first. This pregnancy has been different though I had a bad bout of heartburn at 9 weeks then it seemed to die down again until I hit about 28weeks. Gaviscon makes me sick so I can't take that! I've found stopping away from processed food, chewing gum & eating milky weetabix has worked well so far for me. A friend also told me that drinking camomile tea an hour or so before bed works however I haven't tried it for myself yet! Good luck Smile

FlaviaAlbia · 30/08/2017 08:12

Thanks for the replies!

I hope it dies down then once the initial hormones settle.

I haven't been eating much for dinner as it just seems to make it worse.

About four days post conception.

You need ranitidine or olmeprazole. If they won't prescribe them, ask the GP if there's any medical reason you'd should t have them. If no, then both are available otc (even in supermarkets.) and are cheap. Both are ok to take in pregnancy. Ranitidine is a different pregnancy drug category because it's been around longer and has a loner times worth of safety data, not because any actual evidence of it being less safe is out there.

fatfingeredfran · 30/08/2017 10:32

omneprozole is your friend! Lifesaver!!

BaffledMummy · 30/08/2017 11:00

Heartburn pretty much the second I conceived right up until labour with both pregnancies...it was miserable. I cant even look at a bottle of Gaviscon now without feeling pained. Hope you find something that works OP - I did find it one of the more upsetting side effects of pregnancy.

Lemondrop99 · 30/08/2017 11:24

I've had it constantly from 6 weeks right through out pregnancy.

See your GP. Get Omaprazole. It's a life saver

Jumble27 · 30/08/2017 11:37

From about 7 weeks (I'm only 11 weeks right now and sitting here with my chest burning!)

Rennies make me gag, peptac liquid didn't stay down and Gaviscon makes me gag and turns my stomach! Plus it gives me relief for all of 5 minutes before it comes back Angry

I have a doctors appointment this afternoon, I hope they can give me something, ANYTHING to take away the constant burning!

redfragglebiker · 30/08/2017 11:43

I had heartburn before I even got a positive test. Cleared off at around 10 weeks though. It did come back at around 20 weeks but only for a few days then it went again. Currently 28 weeks so hoping I've seen the last of it for a while.

FlaviaAlbia · 30/08/2017 12:16

Thanks for all the info everyone, you may have saved my sanity. Last time was so bad I really can't face it again.

Oh, let me know how you get on if you remember @Jumble27 please!

Didn't get ringing this morning and there's no point ringing now as there won't be any appointments left so will ring tomorrow and ask about the two medicines mentioned here.

The side effects were unpleasant for me for a week or two (stomach cramps mainly) but once my body got used to the medicine they went away. Can't be without it now it has been a total game changer. I ❤️ omneprozole!

Jumble27 · 30/08/2017 14:12

I shall do @FlaviaAlbia, I'm sorry you're also suffering Sad

I'm just hoping they don't tell me it's normal and send me on my way with gaviscon, every time I have some I fight the urge to throw up. And now brushing my teeth makes me gag as the mint toothpaste just makes me think of gaviscon! Bleurgh Envy

Mandraki · 30/08/2017 16:16

Have had it night and day since 5 weeks! Absolute hell! Only recently discovered (at 35 weeks) Ranitidine, which you can buy over the counter, and provides 12 hour relief. I take it before bed and it just about gets me through the night; bliss. Used to wake up nearly vomiting stomach acid, not pleasant.

Jumble27 · 30/08/2017 16:47

Well I went to the doctor and she prescribed mucogel, I'm hoping it's not as hideous as gaviscon and that it actually works!

I would have preferred a tablet to just swallow because I'm sure all the medicine will taste awful but we'll see!

Daviana · 30/08/2017 18:17

Whoever finds a helpful medicine, please post immediately. Am counting 12now but feel so not nice. I don't feel like eating anything at all

FlaviaAlbia · 30/08/2017 18:59

Glad you got something @Jumble27, I hope it helps!

I know what you mean about Galvison, it's only recently I could take it again without it turing my stomach and DS is nearly 4. Now I'm back to stomach turning again!

Glad you found that and thanks for the info @Mandraki, it's just utterly hideous isn't it?

OP posts:
Jumble27 · 31/08/2017 10:16

@FlaviaAlbia if anyone suggests mucogel, steer clear! Not only is it disgusting (I could barely keep it down!) it did absolutely NOTHING!

After taking it I broke down in tears (twice, I'm an utter wimp!) because I'm so fed up of gagging and having to take disgusting medicine! DP phoned the doctors this morning whilst i was in my "woe is me" craze and explained to the receptionist that it's the liquid that is making me gag and not helping. She's going to see if a doctor can prescribe something in pill form.

I'm praying that they will prescribe something that ACTUALLY works, so I feel like a human being! I know it's horrible, but right now I'm not feeling excited about this LO as all I can do is dwell on how rubbish I feel!

FlaviaAlbia · 31/08/2017 10:59

Oh @Jumble27, I'm so sorry! That sounds revolting. I'd break down too, it seems like too much on top of everything else.

I know what you mean, I dithered about having a second at all and this isn't helping...

@FlaviaAlbia thanks for not judging me for saying that, I have only said it out loud to DP and I'm worried I've upset him!

I look at DD and think I know deep down it will be worth it, I just want to feel well again! Scan is in just over a week, I think when I can see the little so and so who's put me through this my heart will melt and it will make it a little easier!

How old is your first child? Mine's 4, we haven't officially told her yet but she's picked up on things and the other day she asked if she could buy some nappies for her baby sister!

FlaviaAlbia · 31/08/2017 12:25

Ah, same, I think it's natural to feel like this tbh, it's when it starts so early and you know you have so long to go!

My scan is next Friday, I'm slightly nervous, I just wish I knew everything is OK. I had to go in with DS for an xray when I must have been just pregnant so that's not helping my worry. I was behind the screen so I'm sure it's fine but it's been niggling.

Awh, that so sweet Smile It's amazing how perceptive children are, DS is nearly 4 and keeps telling me I'm growing a baby though we haven't told him and we've been careful not to talk about it near him. He must have picked up something though!

Omneprozole!!

It's a pill!

Honestly it is the business - ask for it! It will sort it right out! It stops you producing so much stomach acid, where as all gaviscon etc does is try to mask the symptoms.

MrsPandaBear · 31/08/2017 12:45

Mine started at about 8 weeks both times. I have a hiatus hernia which is supposed to make heartburn much more likely (a hiatus hernia is quite common and I don't normally get any symptoms, I only know about it from an unrelated scan). It's apparently to do with hormones making your diaphragm relax which is why it can kick off so early. It may help to know that my heartburn didn't really get any worse through either pregnancy - and I went 13 days overdue with DC1.

Gaviscon didn't do anything except make me feel sick so I was prescribed ranitidine. It took a few days for everything to heal after i started taking it, but then it was magic as long as I kept taking it religiously. Ranitidine made me constipated so I had to take lactulose as well. It's worth keeping track in case there are any foods that particularly set it off - my biggest trigger food turned out to be cake Sad which isn't on any list of foods to avoid with reflux I've ever seen.

Jumble27 · 31/08/2017 12:46

@FlaviaAlbia I think they're a lot more aware than we give them credit for!

Although I'm not sure DD will be pleased if this one is a little boy, she has her heart set on a baby sister!

@fatfingeredfran I've read about that, I'm keeping my fingers crossed that's what they give me, I literally cannot take more minty liquids!!!

Jumble27 · 31/08/2017 12:47

Also @FlaviaAlbia I hope your scan goes well and LO is healthy and well Smile
