Hi,

I know this is technically a question for "Childbirth" but I've been watching it a couple of weeks and it doesn't get much traffic so figure I'd post here....

So, my due date is tomorrow....this is my second DC and I'd really like to avoid a epidural this time due to many reasons!

Anyway, midwife has explained that I can have diamorphine and having seen so many negative stories I'd love to see some positives!!! Can't anyone give me one?

Has it helped anyone get nearer to the much wanted 10cm dilated?

Xx

I meant to say CAN anyone give me one rather than can't :) xxx

You can have diamorphine - just wait and see whether you'll want it.

Diamorphine is the medical name for heroin, so clearly it has a lot of fans.
I only have experience of morphine (less potent that diamorphine) and it's a great painkiller but like the Pink song says it 'made me itch' and I was glad when it wore off.

G+A is great stuff btw Grin

JoshGrobansFurryHamster · 22/08/2017 22:05

It's lovely Grin

And as above..the itching is not pleasant - I was given an antihistamine for it

Good luck

Diamorphine is fucking brilliant- it still hurt but I didn't care!

joannegrady90 · 22/08/2017 22:12

It's awesome !

minime88 · 22/08/2017 22:17

Thanks for replies :)

This is my second baby so do have some labour experience- gas and air helped me get to 5cm but felt like it was useless past that point. I refused diamorphine and went straight for an epidural which I now regret as it slowed things down massively and I ended up with forceps and an episiotomy!

My aim is to try and get to 5cm with a bath at home, tens machine and gas and air and then if need be try diamorphine! Has it ever got anyone close to the pushing stage?

It's great stuff, I was begging the midwife to slip some extra in my bag.

I spent my labour singing and dribbling Grin

KitKatCHA · 22/08/2017 22:24

I had it in my first labour, it definitely reduced the pain but made me feel really spaced out. I can't remember much of the actual birth as I was high as a kite. I had pethidine second time round and it didn't work nearly as well plus they had to give an anti emetic at the same time as it often causes vomiting.

RiseToday · 22/08/2017 22:30

I wasn't offered it, I feel robbed!

Couldiseriouslybepregnant · 22/08/2017 22:31

It's amazing Grin

chocolateshortcake · 23/08/2017 07:33

It is amazing :) I went to sleep inn between contractions after I had it!!

feeelingbad · 23/08/2017 07:37

I had it and have no regrets.

I still wanted to feel the contractions and know what was going on with my body, it took the edge off the pain but I was still able to feel something.

I remember all of the birth.

I was drowsy and a bit spaced out but it helped me through.

minime88 · 23/08/2017 07:40

I know people have mixed opinions about it but it's nice to hear positive stories- especially since I'm trying to stay positive about the birth! I am bricking it but feel like I'm going to end being induced...no signs of labour whatsoever so think she's pretty comfortable at the mo!

feeelingbad- that's something I was hoping for- I want to feel contractions but for that edge to be taken off!

Due date today, wish me luck xxx

The only pleasant part of a very traumatic labour was diamorphine! Grin

It caused me no unpleasant side effects but I know we all have different experiences.

Wait and see if you need it and want it but try not to be scared of it. If you experience side effects, they can usually be countered by another drug - antihistamine, antiemetic, etc

TeaTeaTea · 23/08/2017 07:56

I was offered diamorphine as not allowed pethadine (more chance of that reducing effects of my anti-epilepsy drugs) - it was great! It took the edge off the worst pain but I was still aware and in control (ha, as you'll ever be with the massive contrations!). As chocolateshortcake said above - I also fell asleep between contractions!
It may have contributed to my DS being less active (then again that could have been the standard meds I take anyway...) so the midwives were concerned towards the end but he was fine, even BF quickly. He just came out really chilled (awake & breathing but not screaming his head off).

I'm having it again this time around, with the help of G & A when pushing.

MessyBun247 · 23/08/2017 07:57

I loved it! No itching, just lovely relaxed, happy feeling

Misstomrs · 23/08/2017 07:59

I would definitely have diamorphine again. I had it twice, once after induction started kicking in and was having massive contractions and minimal dilation, and once when in 'active' labour. Both times I threw up like a trouper and hears music then fell asleep. Bliss! I think it'll definitely help get you closer to ten. Think I got to 6/7 but then caved as they were doen to the last epidural machine, although with gas and air I was doing ok. Just remember it comes in waves; what feels unbearable initially will settle down and your body will learn to manage it so it's tolerable before you move onto the next 'set'. I don't think I understood that properly last time so I panicked a bit when I got to about 6/7 and grabbed the epidural. Remember though, however you do it, you are amazing for having this baby. Good luck

Sunshinesaz86 · 23/08/2017 08:15

Omg diamorphine was amazing for me! I remember starting to panic with the pain and thought I was mooing like a cow! Thought I'd need a epidural (I was only 4cm) 😂🙈 once i had the diamorphine it really took the edge off and I felt much more in control and got through the labour with that (and failed forceps/kiwi vontouse and episiotomy) but that's another story!

I personally would recommend all day long.

Good luck x

SonicBoomBoom · 23/08/2017 08:19

Do you only want positive stories? Or are you weighing up the pros and cons?

FloatingCamel · 23/08/2017 08:28

Have you got any? Can I have some?

minime88 · 23/08/2017 14:12

SonicBoomBoom- thank you but just positive :) I've seen loads and loads of negatives on here which have been really useful to weigh up pros and cons but because birth is imminent I'm trying just to focus on positives now xx

I had it twice. Both short labours, just under 3 hours all in. It relaxed me enough to get on with the job. That coupled with G&A worked for me.

You know that stage when you're tipsy and start to love everyone? The diamorphine took me there in seconds. I can see why people find it moreish.

RockyBird · 23/08/2017 14:18

Oh, but it made me pukey, I had to also get anti sickness meds alongside.

JaneDoe99 · 23/08/2017 14:18

Can you have remifentanyl? (Not sure of spelling). I had that with my second and it was glorious

Expectingbsbunumber2 · 23/08/2017 14:27

It worked wonders 😆
