Maternity vs nursing bras, in VERY large sizes

I know a nursing bra is one that lets you unclip to get a boob out for breastfeeding, but what is a maternity bra? Some websites call the nursing bra a maternity/nursing bra, which makes sense, but I also read I should consider wearing a maternity bra from early in the pregnancy. Is that just a soft stretchy non-underwired bra, or is there something special about it?

Now for my second question, does anyone know a website where I can get really big bras? I've always had big boobs but put on weight over the past couple of years that I wasn't able to shift before getting pregnant. So I am or rather pre-pregnancy was a 44GG, and found it hard enough to get bras in that size. I don't know how much bigger I am likely to get but I can't even find a single website with a maternity/nursing bra that goes up to 44G - some have that back size but not cup size, and some that cup size but much smaller back size.

I guess I could get the right cup size and get one of those extender hooks to make the back size bigger, has anyone done that? Or does anyone know of a website that does maternity bras in that size and bigger?

The only nursing bra I could find to fit me was the Elomi bra which I got from a great little company called Ample Bosom online. I am a 32H normally but went up to a J when I was breastfeeding.

Have you had your breasts measured at Bravissimo or a John Lewis? 44GG sounds like a suspiciously M and S (and therefore wrong) kind of size to me.

YouCantArgueWithStupid · 19/08/2017 18:48

I'm a similar size OP and I brought back extenders for ones that I could get in my cup size

FrogsSitonLogs · 19/08/2017 19:20

Bravissimo.

smileycat16 · 19/08/2017 19:20

44GG, my current size, is the largest that Elomi goes up to at least on that website - but thanks for the tip, Ample Bosom looks like it will be a good bet for me!

I got measured at two places before my wedding last year, M and S and also a local independent lingerie place that everyone locally raves about. I think they both came up with the same size but to be honest I can't remember now. I will definitely have to get re-measured but wasn't sure how soon to do that, I am 10 and a half weeks and haven't noticed that I've gotten any bigger yet - I just wanted to get a few ideas about where I could go once I do realise my bras don't fit!

You can check your size using Boob or Bust (see website for measuring instructions and size calculator) or go to Bravissimo which is the only reliable high street shop for bra fitting.

Don't get fitted in M&S whatever you do!

Bravissimo should stock bras in your size. If not, Boob or Bust has a list of stockists for bigger sizes. Bra stop, Belle Lingerie and Nursing Bra Shop are 3 online sellers that spring to mind.

AccrualIntentions · 19/08/2017 19:25

I'm 26 weeks and still in some of my usual bras which fit. If they grow any more I will have to go and get measured but didn't want to do this too early because good bras can be so expensive.

smileycat16 · 19/08/2017 20:26

Thanks for the ideas - Bravissimo only goes up to a 40 cup size and Bra Stop up to 42 and Nursing Bra Shop only up to a G cup in my back sie which is what I currently am - but Belle Lingerie looks like it might be good and I hadn't come across them while doing Google searches before - thanks! I consider that a result or at least peace of mind so I have somewhere to look when I do need a new bra!

What size tops do you wear?
I'm really suspicious of the 44 band size!
If you do your Boob or Bust measurements please report back Smile

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 19/08/2017 20:30

Hopeful16 · 19/08/2017 20:38

I just wore "normal" bras tbh throughout my pregnancy because all of the non-wired maternity ones offered no support at all.

I was advised against it for my comfort and for my boobs producing milk but it was fine.

furryelephant · 19/08/2017 20:45

Check out molke or hiccups&juice Smile

Dede124 · 19/08/2017 21:04

Maternity bras are for comfort throughout pregnancy and nursing bras are for towards the end and breastfeeding I asked the woman at mothercare as I was confused about the same thing and she told me you should get measured at around 34-38 weeks for nursing bra when you've got your milk and that's the size your likely to stay at :)... as for sizes I don't know where is best! smileycat16 · 19/08/2017 21:46

Namechange30: I'm a size 20 in clothes. Anything smaller than a 44 or maybe 42 back size bra wont do up around me!

pestov · 19/08/2017 22:06

Please go to bravissimo anyway - at size 22 I had a 38 back. They do nursing bras and soft cup which were super comfy once my boobs got bigger in pregnancy

NameChange30 · 19/08/2017 22:34

smiley
If the cup size is too small, the band can feel too tight. The true test is whether you can do it up with the bra on backwards. Or just see what the tape measure says!

Whats wrong with m & s??

Katescurios · 20/08/2017 06:24

I'm a 44E and size 22 when i was pregnant asda did a non-wired nursing bra and the xl fitted really well (surprisingly!!)

Have you tried yours clothing or simply be?

deary · 20/08/2017 06:28

Have a look at Molke (I think they are called), my friend is a similar size- if not bigger, and raves about their bras.

Ollivander84 · 20/08/2017 06:43

I'm third to mention Molke. I'm a 32/32K and their bras are fab

peaceloveandbiscuits · 20/08/2017 08:28

Try Rigby & Peller if you have one locally, even if just to get fitted (bras are ££). I had a wonderful experience and didn't feel pressured to buy something that didn't fit (Bravissimo I'm looking at you). I'm a 22/24 and wearing a 42GG nursing bra which I bought in Debenhams.
