Does a "popped" belly button mean diastasis recti?

My extremely "innie" button has popped, well half popped, it's like up on one side so it's defiantly on it's way.

I read somewhere that a popped button means diastasis recti... But I think it might have been bogus information and I can't find it again.

So does a "popped" belly button mean diastasis?

I had a popped out belly button during my pregnancy and although it hasn't fully gone back in and I have stretch marks, I wouldn't say I still look pregnant/have diastasis

robinia · 10/08/2017 23:45

My belly button came out every time, went back in again afterwards every time and I have no idea what diastasis wotsit is!!

OnNaturesCourse · 10/08/2017 23:46

I'm only 25 weeks too so I'm quite early on for it to be going. I'm worried about the separation as my mother suffered it.

You can get an umbilical hernia which is s seperate thing.

OnNaturesCourse · 10/08/2017 23:46

diastasis recti is the separation of your stomach muscles.

Mine popped (both times) and i don't think I have diastasis. I would know wouldn't I? Had my last baby 2 years ago.

OnNaturesCourse · 10/08/2017 23:50

You can Google it and it shows you how to self test post birth, unfortunately I can't test while pregnant xx

I'd say nope. I had fairly severe muscle separation with my first and no popping (got quite a lot flatter and shallower but no popping). I don't think the two are related. You'll know if you do start to have diastasis recti- it often hurts with a first pregnancy and is quite obvious if you press with your fingers. Also, if I'm entirely wrong and you do have it/ develop it, don't panic as it does heal. Recommend seeing a good physio post birth 6 week check up, and don't rush your recovery.

LittleBirdBlues · 10/08/2017 23:51

I remember reading about this, but I never quite managed to check whether or not I have it. My belly is pretty much flat, does that mean I don't have it?

SpunBodgeSquarepants · 10/08/2017 23:52

I've always had an innie which popped out horrifically quite early on in pregnancy, it would bulge out a good inch if I coughed or laughed!!

I had to have my appendix removed when my DS was three months old and it was noted that I had an umbilical hernia. It hasn't caused me any problems and DS is now three and a half.

ChainingDaisy · 10/08/2017 23:53

I had diastis recti and no popped out belly button...

OnNaturesCourse · 10/08/2017 23:55

Littlebird... I think you can still have it with a flat tummy, it's about the gap between the muscles.

My mums never healed correctly (doubt it was well known back then) and although I'd never say it to her, I scared of having a belly like hers. Very vain but also because she gets a lot of back pain from it x

I have diastasis recti and it happened well before 25 weeks, and yes, my belly button popped too.

I had it after my first but they did eventually go back together, I had an umbilical hernia too which I had surgery to fix and that seemed to help it go back together.

Having children is such fun. I'll see how it goes this time and if it's still not closed 18 months after birth I'll look into surgery to fix it but it appears this isnt NHS funded.

OnNaturesCourse · 11/08/2017 07:58

Was there any other symptoms? Pain, loss of strength etc when you were pregnant?

LittleBirdBlues · 11/08/2017 14:08

Is there any way you can tell from a picture??

OnNaturesCourse · 11/08/2017 18:30

Aw I miss my flat tummy!

Your muscles look tight, but are there any gaps around your button that can be pushed in?

I had diastesis recti quite badly but my belly button didn't pop, so I don't think the two automatically go together.

sadmum2017 · 11/08/2017 18:50

My belly button didn't pop out and I had a large diastasis, so I don't think it means much. I'm 4 months pp and only now been cleared by physio to start exercising as it's nearly closed.

The dead giveaway of a diastasis is 'doming' of your abdomen when you try to sit up. So mine would dome up in a sort of cone shape when I tensed my abs or tried to sit up from lying position.

Big 10lb baby to blame.

OnNaturesCourse · 11/08/2017 18:56

My belly has already domed a little, but it's not pointy like the pictures I've seen and now I'm preggo it seems to dome less oddly.

I guess time will tell. And I must stop reading horror stories online about surgeries etc x

Mine popped with my first and I had no diastasis recti - my muscles were regularly checked as part of training for a sport I do. Popped again this time and I'm not even mildly concerned. I think if you have a fairly shallow belly button it's going to pop no matter what you do!

Cakescakescakes · 11/08/2017 19:00

Mine popped both times but I had the muscle separation second time only. Pilates is helping a lot.

OnNaturesCourse · 11/08/2017 19:01

Oh my belly button is, well was, very deep. The whole tip of my little finger would get lost in there when cleaning in shower etc. Ridiculous thing and now it's went completely stretched and flat while one side is rising out.

I had/still do have diacritics recti quite badly from dc1 and my belly button never popped, it still have it and am pregnant with dc2 and it's still an innie!

sadmum2017 · 11/08/2017 19:20

I think the horror stories of surgery etc are pretty rare from what I've been told. Physio could get her fist in my diastasis a few days after birth and was pretty horrified and I didn't need surgery. also didn't really do many of the exercises she gave me It just repaired itself.

LittleBirdBlues · 11/08/2017 21:37

on nature I actually think I might have diastasis! There is a smallish gap, I can only feel it when I do a "sit up" from a lying down position and my belly pops up and looks a little some like at one point.

It has never bothered me. Why is this a problem??
