I have ds 3 and dd 19 months already and want to ttc for no3 when I'm 36 (next year) (Actually I'd like to before then but dh won't have it ) Just interested in how long took the slightly older amongst us to conceive as I know your fertility is supposed to take a nose dive when you get to 35. What is your experience? I got pregnant quite quickly with both of mine but was very scientific about it.

I'm 38 and currently 10 weeks pg.
Got pg last year but had m/c at 12 weeks. Wasn't really trying to get pg the first time - it was a happy surprise. Got pg again 3 months after the m/c.

Inerestingly, ds1 took nearlt 18 months and 1 mc for me at 33 but ds2 who is on the way now at 35 snuk in on the first attempt much to our amazement! - was expecting another year or so of hard graft, especially having hit the so-called 35 drop off - not convinced myself, know plenty of people who conceived easily 35+. I think you are right though - I had got much better at knowing when ovulating in the intervening time (persona) so bang on and happenned straight away - timing is definitely key. We will probably go for no 3 when this one is 18 months or so when I will be 37 and I must say I ma much less worried about it now.

I'm 37 and 13 weeks pregnant. DD was conceived when I was 34 and a half and I've had one miscarriage in between.

It wasn't easy for me to concieve as DP has very low sex drive and trying to get him into the mood at ANY time besides at the RIGHT time can be a nightmare and has to be planned with military precision. In the end, we decided on IUI to avoid further stress in our relationship and I got pregnant first time. The second time it took five IUI cycles to get pregnant but IUI is comparable to sex I think, in terms of success, so I don't think I have much of a fertility issue.

A word of caution though, I do know two women who have had problems conceiving later in life, although both have had endometriosis and other complications. LIke someone said earlier, I think general health and fertility has as much to do with anything as age.

Who said that they were at it like rabbits? Any tips? i'm so jealous!

I'm 38 now and 37 when I conceived dc2, 35 for dd1. DD1 took about four months from coming off the pill and dc2 was the first time we tried, a bit too quickly iykwim I'd imagined at least a year to get our heads round the idea. We weren'r remotely scientific about either conception both just happened like that and both healthy pregnancies touch wood. Friends the same age and older have also conceived just as quickly, though nearly all had children before. If you have two already you should be fine it's starting from zero at 35, like I did, which is risky but I think the media likes to scare women far too much on this issue

I am 36 and 12 weeks pregnant. We started trying for no.2 in June last year and got my BFP at the end of January this year.

I had my DD 3 days after I was 32.

BetsyBoop · 29/03/2007 15:30

pregnant with no2 at 40 (9wks)

Had DD at 39, she's 15months now.

Took over 2 years to conceive DD, eventually conceived with the help of clomid.

conceived this one on second PP cycle whilst still b/fing !

my fertility seems to be getting better not worse with age

mum2george · 29/03/2007 19:59

Hi, I'm 39 next week and will be 23 weeks on my birthday. This is my 5 pregnancy, had on in my early 20's where I managed to conceive using the condoms and the morning after pill. Since then I've had, 1st night of trying (aged 34). 3 months aged 35. 7 months aged 37. and lastly 3 months aged 38. So I'd say yes, maybe I am less fertile but it still seems ok. When I say "trying" though, all we ever did was have sex more regulary and not use contraception, just couldn't be bothered with all that timing stuff, just drunk more and had a good time!

What I would say though is that all these pregnancies haven't been successful though, whether the problems we have encountered have been aged related I don't know, what I do know is that if you start having problems aged 35 plus it really puts the pressure on you. None of the problems we've had though would ever have put me off.

midnightexpress · 30/03/2007 09:17

4 months with ds1 (used clomid for last 2 months as wasn't ovulating regularly) at nearly 39. Ds2 conceived 5 months after ds1 born, accidentally, and I could count the number of times we'd had sex after ds1 on the fingers of one hand. So, for someone who thought she wasn't very fertile and is over 40, no problems here. Mind you, gynaecologist told dp that women should walk on the other side of the street from him, he's so super-fertile.

eidsvold · 30/03/2007 09:24

i took next to no time to get pregnant with dd1(33yo) and dd2 (35yo). With dd3 born last week - took about 6 months but we were not actively trying iyswim.

LiliAnjelika · 30/03/2007 21:16

Just wanted to say a massive congratulations to eidsvold. WE met on another thread....

elkiedee · 26/06/2007 23:10

Anyone still about from this thread, or any new people who are interested? I will be 38 this coming weekend, had a baby at the start of May. Started ttc in October 2005 so took 9 months, but really I don't think we tried that hard in terms of frequency or planning, just stopped using contraception when we did it.

Hope to be able to have another one, plan to start ttc when I return to work 3 months before my 39th birthday.

I'm not used to being made to feel old, pregnancy, childbirth and motherhood are the first time that's happened to me.

aikigypsy · 27/06/2007 00:48

I wasn't around when this thread started, but I'm 36 and now about 20-21 weeks pregnant with my first. It took 24-48 hours of going at it like rabbits at the right time, for me, with a guy who obviously doesn't have sperm count issues.

I have a theory about this drop in fertility we're all so obsessed about. I read somewhere (and I wish I could remember where) that a woman's fertility starts to decline rapidly about 10 years before she goes through menopause. Since we can hit menopause at various ages from 40-60, fertility can drop off anytime from 30-50 (50's probably pushing it for almost anyone, though). I figure that since my mother went through menopause in her very late 50s, I've got a few more years, assuming that I'm following in her footsteps. No fertility problems on my father's side of the family, either.

Desiderata · 27/06/2007 00:54

Well, I conceived my first child at 38. My dh was 44 at the time.

We had unprotected sex once ... and that was enough.

Due to our age, and the fact that dh has four children from his first marriage, we decided on a vasectomy after ds was born. Otherwise, we'd still be conceiving easily right up to my menopause (whenever that will be).

Genetics play a huge factor.

UCM · 27/06/2007 00:56

No, thank fuck

Rainbowdays · 27/06/2007 08:09

I had ds when 35, took 4 months to concieve
I had dd when 36, took 4 months to concieve
all being well, I will be having dc3 when 40, took 7 months to concieve.
So this time definitely took longer, but am currently 4weeks+3days pg!

PinkElephant · 27/06/2007 09:02

I've just turned 35 and am pregnant with my first. Took me 6mths to get pregnant but it sadly ended in an ectopic at christmas and then got pregnant second time 3mths later, which is all going well so far. We're really determined to have 2 children so I may try again fairly quickly after having the first just incase it takes a while second time round.

Wolfgirl · 27/06/2007 09:08

I was in my early forties when I first fell preggy. In fact I fell preggy on honeymoon! but unfortunately lost it - but 3 months later fell preggy with DS1. When we tried again for second baby, it took me a good 6 months. we started to try in the Nov. but fell in the April. Sooooooo didnt want to fall in April as did not want a Christmas baby. But thats what we got, and she was due on Christmas day, but turned up a week early - ggirl!

I would dearly love a 3rd, but now at 44, I really am too tired, coupled with thyroid health issues, I never quite run on all cylinders . But two will do. they both came out perfect and utterly butterly gorgeous! see profile! xx

lizziemun · 27/06/2007 09:09

Had dd when i was 35.

now pg (31 weeks) with my 2nd and will be 38 in october.

It took nearly 2 yrs of ttc to get pg both times, but i think this would have been the same if i was younger/met dh before i was 30 as i have a hormonal inbalance and a irregular cycle anywhere from 20days to 45days, and then periods of no for months.

When i found out i was pg with dd(10weeks) i hadn't had a period for 6months.

Wolfgirl · 27/06/2007 09:15

congrats Rainbowdays!! btw

speedymama · 27/06/2007 09:18

I had DTS when I was 39yo. Took 3 weeks to conceive.

elkiedee · 27/06/2007 09:39

The midwife warned me that people often fall pregnant quite quickly a second time, even if it took a while first time round, if anything you can be fertile without knowing it. I know quite a few people who've returned from maternity leave at work already pregnant again, not always planned... so I'm hopeful about trying for a second even at 39 or so.

MuffinMclay · 27/06/2007 09:43

I'm 35 and pg with no2. It took me 8 years of ttc to produce ds for various reasons, but no2 was conceived in the first month of trying.

mozhe · 27/06/2007 09:54

Am I still the most elderly ? >

Tinkjon · 27/06/2007 10:01

Took 5 months with first when I was 33 and 6 months with this one (am now 38) - so no real difference here! Good luck!
