Before You Sleep by Benji Bennett.

Impatientwino · 26/07/2017 19:19

When the world was waiting for you by Gillian shields is beautiful

HelenaJustina · 26/07/2017 19:21

On the night you were born

MrsPringles · 26/07/2017 19:27

Guess how much I love you

makes me cry and DS is now nearly 3 Blush

Peepo by Janet and Allan Ahlberg

I always buy this for friends and will be buying one for our baby. It has such a lovely rhythm to it and lots of happy memories from reading it to my little brother when he was a baby.

Naughtylittleflea · 26/07/2017 19:32

'It's a little baby' Julia Donaldson and Rebecca Cobb

Deploycharitygoats · 26/07/2017 19:35

Goodnight Moon. Half the pages have black and white illustrations (which is good for newborns because they can only see high contrasts) half are in colour. I remember when DS1's interest switched from the black and white to the colour images. It's still a really cool memory.

MrsPringles · 26/07/2017 19:37

Yes yes to Peepo too!

Here's a little baby, 1 2 3 Smile

DS loves that one and it makes me all nostalgic as my mum used to read that to me and my sister when we were little

missg00se · 26/07/2017 19:38

Ten little fingers and ten little toes is a nice one. Although DH was born with 11 toes and says he is offended...

That aside, it's a lovely book to read with a little one.

Nonibaloni · 26/07/2017 19:39

Yes to Peepo and Guess how much I love you. You won't need to read the words by week two.

SkyWalker95 · 26/07/2017 19:41

I like to read a couple chapters of Harry Potter or The Hobbit at the moment to my lo each night. I like sharing the books I read as a child.

Thistledew · 26/07/2017 19:48

It might sound a bit pretentious, but when DS was really tiny I read him lots of poetry. He obviously didn't understand the words but he seemed to respond to the rhythm of the words.

He is 1 now and likes books with pictures and flaps to lift!

EyeDrops · 26/07/2017 20:14

Goodnight Tractor (there's also Goodnight Spaceman, Digger, Pirate or Princess!)

On the night you were born (makes me weep though!)

Dear Zoo

We've got one called Snuggle Bunny that has a hand puppet, it's fab

GreengageJam · 26/07/2017 20:31

Good night little monster. I saw it recommended on here and I absolutely love it.

TestingTestingWonTooFree · 26/07/2017 21:04

We have a lovely book called Yawn.

1000jobstodo · 26/07/2017 21:27

Another vote for 'on the night you were born' beautiful book.

Also 'I'll love you forever'. The illustrations and concept is a little strange but all about how a mother never stops thinking of their child as their baby, even into adulthood.
There's a phrase repeated on each page
'I'll love you forever,
I'll like you for always,
As long as I'm living, my baby you'll be'
My 3 year old recites it to me and it's just lovely!

SonicBoomBoom · 26/07/2017 21:30

I love that phrase, 1000

fatfingeredfran · 26/07/2017 21:31

Fantastic thread - place marking to remind myself to buy some of these.

MollyCule · 26/07/2017 21:31

Another vote for Goodnight Moon. DD won't sit still for many things but she does tend to sit and listen to that one (great for newborns as lots of black and white illustrations, and the rhythm is gentle). It's part of our bedtime routine. She also absolutely loves Dear Zoo.

sureitsgrand · 26/07/2017 21:49

Another vote for 'Love you Forever'
Also 'Room on the Broom' my teo year old can recite this word for word, it's rhythm is lovely.

Each Peach Pear Plum!
Its amazing and takes me back sooo many years

lookatthemoon · 27/07/2017 01:51

Another vote for Goodnight Moon as the colour contrasts work really well for tiny infants.

I also loved reading 10 little fingers to DS.

Where's My Cow by Terry Pratchett. It's both funny and lovely. Though possibly DC needs to be a few months old to start enjoying it (because you have to do all the noises and a newborn might not like them all).
