Hi, I'm 19 weeks pregnant and can't wait to start buying for my little one! I was just wondering what all you other wonderful mummy's started to buy in preparation for your baby?
So far I've got a baby nail kit, a few different sizes of nappys, wipes, cotton pads/wool, talc, bath thermometer, nappy cream, a few dummies and baby face wipes. I'm unsure of what else to start buying just yet! Any words of wisdom would be greatly appreciated Smile

Muslin cloths and plenty of them. I found they had so many useful uses. Other than that you seem to have everything I can think of you sound very on the ball.

SlaveToDisney · 20/07/2017 14:59

Also have you thought about a little hat every time I've given birth they insisted on a hat being put on baby when I left hospital.

princessmumy · 20/07/2017 15:04

Oh, I hadn't thought of the cloths! Thank you! I'm due in December with my little girl, on the clothes side of things I've got a few hats, tights, scratch mitts and onesies. I was worried about her freezing on her way home due to it being so cold around her due date. Thank you for your suggestions! SmileBiscuit

I used muslin cloths as a comforter for DD, she is now nearly 2 and still loves her muslin cloth and luckily she still uses it when she needs a cuddle and because they all look practically the same she can use any.

I use them for everything, wrapping before a bath, comforter, instead of a bib, when she is ill and wipe her snot etc.

arbrighton · 20/07/2017 15:09

more nappies and cotton wool pads. Cannot believe how many we've got through in just 4weeks

Princesspinkgirl · 20/07/2017 15:16

Nappies wipes muslins hats and plenty of scratch mittens

GinIsIn · 20/07/2017 15:19

You mustn't use talc on babies anymore.

Nappy rash cream, coconut oil (good as a moisturiser, on cradle cap etc.), a good thermometer.

demirose87 · 20/07/2017 15:27

starter pack of formula milk to take into hospital if you're not planning to breastfeed and as a back up. Blanket/ shawl to leave hospital

moggle · 20/07/2017 15:30

Also wouldn't use talc.
Muslins (again!) (get some big ones as well as normal size), an in ear thermometer (braun are good).
Couple of changing mats and a foldup changing mat (even if your changing bag has one it's handy to keep in the car). Cheap on amazon.

Singingforsanity · 20/07/2017 15:36

I'd have a look at bottles, sterilisers, breast pumps etc. There are lots to choose from! I found Lansinoh bottles the best (great for transitioning breast-fed babies). Last time I had a single electric breast pump which was fine but this time I'll definitely go for a double! I ended up expressing every 3 hours for months (day and night) so being able to do both breasts at once would have been great!

I'd also start researching the big ticket items like travel systems, cots, cribs etc.

Bear2014 · 20/07/2017 15:51

I wouldn't buy more than one of any type of baby product in case it doesn't agree with your LO. Buy a couple of packs of size 1 nappies to see you through week 1 but no more - if the brand doesn't fit well or irritates baby's skin you'll want to try others. They also go up a size quite abruptly and you don't want to have loads left over.

Muslins you can never have enough of. Don't go crazy with clothes, buy the basics in first size but you will get bought loads as presents and baby might grow much quicker than you think. It's much easier to go to the shops with a baby than you might think and online shopping is your friend!

PotteringAlong · 20/07/2017 15:55

Don't stock up on nappies! With DS2 i got the same type of used for ds1 - DS2 was smaller, the nappies leaked around the leg. I ended up giving them away. As a pp says, they get through size 1and 2 very quickly and there's a big difference if your baby is 6lb or 10lb.

You're not meant to use talc on babies and most babygro's will have built in scratch mits so you don't need those either.

EpoxyResin · 20/07/2017 15:56

Do you know what, I actually wouldn't go mad on nappies of any particular size - or clothes of any one size either - simply because it only takes one growth spurt for them to not spend very long in a particular size at all! Don't be put off spending though, just buy a little of lots of different sizes instead of lots of newborn for example, or you might have lots left over. We had loads of size 2 nappies when we found ds had grown out of them seemingly within days of growing into them!

InDubiousBattle · 20/07/2017 16:03

Don't buy lots of anything! Wait until you've had your baby and see what you need then. With ds we needed loads of muslin, with dd we used almost none. Dd was in new born nappies for ages, ds out grew them pretty quickly. Everything irritated ds's skin as he had eczema, dd can have anything. We've never needed much by way of nappy rash stuff. Save the money and buy when you need it. The only exception for me would be formula, even if you're planning to bf because when we needed it we really needed it.

Changerofname987654321 · 20/07/2017 16:14

Agree with what everyone else says. Spend your time reading up on how to look after a baby and researching big item.

For clothes I prefer vests and baby grows as little ones have never had clothes on before and I just want them to be comfy.

PotteringAlong · 20/07/2017 16:19

Also, and I know nobody wants to think like this, but wait until you've had your 20 week scan and you know everything is ok. The last thing in the world you want to be doing in a few weeks time is clearing out things you don't actually need.

Starfairylights · 20/07/2017 16:21

Defenitely needed a LOT of bibs.

17caterpillars1mouse · 20/07/2017 16:22

Muslins (you can never have too many), and a blanket or 2

user1493413286 · 20/07/2017 16:22

Muslins, baby blankets and baby bedding. I started off with 4 sheets for the Moses basket but my baby could go through 3 in a night with spitting up so if they were in the wash we we're in trouble. Also I didn't get a baby bouncer chair until my baby was a bit older but wished I'd had one from the beginning as at least it's somewhere you can get baby down for a couple of minutes.
Babies are never too young for toys either.
I wouldn't go crazy on newborn and 0-3 month clothes as you'll be amazed how much gets bought for you.
Be wary of stocking up on too many nappies and wipes etc as my baby's skin didn't react well to pampers wipes and nappies can be outgrown very quickly
I've also never used the scratch mits we bought as lots of baby clothes have little bits of at the end of the sleeve which fold over into scratch mits and don't have the issue of falling off
Thermometer for your room is really useful too.

MenorcaSunrise · 20/07/2017 17:12

Feeding pillow. If it doubles as your pregnancy sleeping pillow, even better.

leafv · 20/07/2017 18:09

My best buy big items are, nexttome crib, sleepyhead, mamaroo. I have a cosatto giggle 2 travel system and I love it. My LO is 11 weeks old.

AssassinatedBeauty · 20/07/2017 18:20

Chuck the talc away, you shouldn't use it on babies at all.

I'd spend some time researching about cots, prams, car seats etc.

Cellular blankets are always handy.

Vanannabananna · 20/07/2017 18:24

Water wipes for newborn. Cotton wool is so fiddly!

clarebear1983 · 21/07/2017 06:32

Please throw the talc away!!

I second water wipes, these are great for explosive poos when you've forgotten you cotton wool/water or are out and about.
