My husband has come up with the name Stanley if we have a little boy (due last week so ready to burst!) which is a family name on his side.
What do fellow mumsnets think of it? I am wondering if it's too old fashioned? PLEASE HELP !

I know of a little boy called Stanley and another one called Sidney. Both old fashioned names, but they actually suit them.

PinkTulips · 25/03/2007 13:00

i like it actually... and stan isn't that old fashioned sounding as an everyday name

hunkermunker · 25/03/2007 13:01

It's getting more common - I know two Stanleys and a Stan.

moopymoo · 25/03/2007 13:02

my dad is stanley...i quite like it but he gets 'stan the man ' all the time

CadburyCremeSquonk · 25/03/2007 13:03

I don't like it personally, but I know someone called Stan and have issues!

I don't see a problem with the name itself.

zippitippitoes · 25/03/2007 13:05

it's quite popular for babies now

but i don't like it personally

just think of stan ogden I'm afraid
and I think it's abit poncey

chocolateshoes · 25/03/2007 13:27

I love the name and would have liked it for DS except my surname begins with St as does DP's (which is DS's middle name) so it would have been Stan St...St...! I also now know a Stan and it really suits him. I love it!

sunnyjim · 25/03/2007 13:28

I like it but it depends on your last name

hunkermunker · 25/03/2007 13:28

Also, it reminds me of Flat Stanley, which I read a lot when I was little!

nogoes · 25/03/2007 13:30

I know of a little Stanley too. I personally don't like it, I also think of Stan Ogden but your ds's generation won't have a clue who he is, so if you like it go for it!

filthymindedvixen · 25/03/2007 13:33

There are lots of old fashioned names which are attractive and perrenial. can't see Stanley ever sounding glamourous or debonair, but hey ho, that's just me. I reckon if you like it and can carry it off with tour surname or whatever, go for it.

notsogummyanymore · 25/03/2007 13:36

it's a refreshing change from all the josh's and jakes i keep hearing!

no offence.

3easterbunniesandnomore · 25/03/2007 13:46

I think it's really cute and know a lil Stanley, too, who is very cute
IT's a nice unusal sort of name, without beig weird

bubblebell1 · 25/03/2007 15:48

i love stanley.. wanted to call ds2 it but a friend beat me to it

mammaduckInHerEasterBonnet · 25/03/2007 15:50

I like it. But can't see zippi's point that it's poncey - surely not?!

Nbg · 25/03/2007 15:52

Its quite cute but I cant really imagine a teenager with the name Stanley.

But if you love it go for it.

Boco · 25/03/2007 16:07

It's cute!

RedLorryYellowLorry · 25/03/2007 16:11

No I don't like it. Reminds me of Laurel and Hardy.

incy · 25/03/2007 16:11

Stanley is very popular at the moment - seems to be that a lot of the 1940's names are very popular - Stanley, Archie, Alfie, etc.

violetsmum · 25/03/2007 16:20

I love name threads! and really like the name Stanley. There's one in dd's playgroup. Good choice as I reckon it's getting more popular and is not too strange.

Disagree strongly that it's a poncey name, it's quite manly (at least it rhymes with it! )to me it's along the lines of Charlie, and I like the abbreviation Stan. I have known quite a few Stanislavs (Russian types) going by the name of Stan. In Eastern Europe it's a fairly common name.

Go for it, I'd say!

As a matter of interest, what kind of names arem't poncey if Stanley is?
