I told my boss at 13 weeks Smile you can leave it up to I think 25 weeks but I'd say it's generally better to say before then. They may very well be able to notice by then anyway!

SheepyFun · 12/07/2017 23:00

I told my boss as soon as I'd had the scan - I have a positive relationship with my colleagues, and wanted to give them as much notice as possible to find a maternity cover. They were very constructive when I wanted to return just one day a week - they might not have been so helpful had I 'stuck to the rules' rather than trying to make things as easy as possible for them.

Brokenbiscuit · 12/07/2017 23:02

One of my team told me before she told her DH!Grin

Elkalv · 12/07/2017 23:48

I told around 16 weeks as bump started to become obvious

PurpleTraitor · 12/07/2017 23:50

I told at 24 weeks.

Algebraic · 12/07/2017 23:57

Told mine at 9 weeks after early scan but more out of necessity than choice. Was being sick at work in a customer facing role so couldn't really keep slipping away and hiding it.

ItsAMackerel · 13/07/2017 00:04

As a manager, the more notice I have the better. It allows me to plan ahead, to make contingency plans for cover and to ensure that risk assessments etc. are done.

Some time shortly after the 13-week scan seems to be fairly common. I would expect a manager to keep the news confidential until an employee was ready to share it but knowing about a pregnancy means that I am more sympathetic to morning sickness/absence and time off for appointments.

issy2165 · 13/07/2017 07:03

Great thank you everyone I'm only 5-6 weeks now but I'm very close to her anyway so I think I'm going to put her in the picture even though it's extremely early days!

My employment lawyer pal says tell work as soon as you take your test! You're protected legally as soon as they know! But she is paranoid and sees a lot of nasty employers!!!

Abrahamkin · 13/07/2017 07:09

I told my manager around week 11, to get time off for the scan at 12 weeks and asked him not to tell others but he could tell upwards to management (who I knew well would not spread the word). I then told my colleagues a few days after the scan. I had done this with both DC1 and DC2. Worked well.

AbbeyRoadCrossing · 13/07/2017 07:17

The first time around week 8 because I was so sick and had some time off for sickness and bleeds. They didn't plan anything btw and I had DS before they'd hired my cover (ok he was early but still!)
Second time I told them at 24 weeks as I was mainly home based and I had a different boss who I knew wouldn't be great about it.

If you want time off for appointments and adjustments (e.g. if you have a risky job) then you'd need to tell them

PotteringAlong · 13/07/2017 07:19

Depends on your job. I needed removing off a list of people trained to restrain pupils so I told my employer before I told my parents. About 5 weeks I think?

DancingUnicorn · 13/07/2017 07:20

I told them at around 9 weeks because someone else in my team was also pregnant and I wanted them to have as much notice as possible (have a really good relationship with them, and it's a small business). I felt so much less anxious about it after I'd told them. I went on to have a miscarriage, and it was so much easier explaining that than if I'd not told them about the pregnancy. I plan to tell them just as early this time around, although I'm having a private scan first this time.

MummyVicky1988 · 13/07/2017 07:45

I told my immediate boss around week 8-9 as needed the time off for 12 week scan. She kept it confidential until I told my immediate colleagues (when I returned to work the day of the scan Grin!) then we notified higher management etc to start all the routine procedures etc.

Ameliablue · 13/07/2017 09:04

I think it depends on your health and job. I told early due to hyperemesis.

welshweasel · 13/07/2017 09:12

19 weeks, but only because I'd started the job at 10 weeks pregnant and I wanted to have as long as possible to prove myself before telling them I'd be taking mat leave! I'd have left it longer but I was going on holiday and wanted to be able to relax as I was worrying about telling them.

Spam88 · 13/07/2017 09:17

I told him after my first booking appointment so that I could get time off for subsequent appointments. Depends on your job as well as to whether you need adjustments - I did but was happy that I could manage the risks myself until I was ready to tell (although it seems this didn't go unnoticed as no one was surprised when I said I was pregnant Grin).

Cat2991 · 13/07/2017 09:32

I told mine the other day at 9 weeks as my sickness was really bad, and I also do a job where I have to move patients , and sometimes look after them in their homes so I asked to be removed from that duty due to possible sickness at theirs homes

Dumbledoresgirl · 13/07/2017 09:37

I didn't have morning sickness to give me away earlier. I told my boss after my scan (which was at about 13 weeks way back then). I think it is a courtesy to let them know as soon as possible so they can prepare for your ML, but I wouldn't want to say anything before I felt the pregnancy was secure.

peachgreen · 13/07/2017 10:04

I told my boss at 7 weeks because I was so sick and kept disappearing!

ScotsLamb · 13/07/2017 10:16

I told mine at 5 weeks as I was in charge of an outdoor education trip for a whole year group and wanted them to have as much notice as possible. So it was me, OH, head teacher and depute that were the only ones to know until scan...

MrsPicklesonSmythe · 13/07/2017 10:36

I'll tell mine when I literally can't get away with it another day. I'm showing already at 9 weeks but will hold off as long as poss. It's a small firm I've not been there long and they won't be happy as I'm the only office staff they have. I've been laid off just before maternity leave before and it wasn't a nice experience so scared of it happening again

SaS2014 · 13/07/2017 10:40

I was 6 weeks when I told my boss.
But it depends on what your job is and if any adjustments need to be made etc.

It was no surprise to her or my colleagues tho (who I told then too) as it was well known we were ttc.

hanna87 · 13/07/2017 10:53

I told my boss at 14.5 weeks! Would have kept it longer but bump was becoming quite obvious... my boss isnt too child friendly and was more concerned about recruiting to the post!

Rockhopper81 · 13/07/2017 11:30

Depends on your job/role really I would say - my cousin had to tell her employer very early, as she needed to be taken off the road and put into an office based role for H&S reasons.

I think generally around/just after the first scan is about right? Although as stated, you're technically covered under maternity regulations as soon as you notify your employer, so in some cases it's better to do it sooner rather than later.
