Watching with interest. I am 17 weeks and haven't told my boss yet. I was going to wait for the 20 week scan. So far I've been working from home and taking half days for appointments and such.

At about 8 weeks as I felt guilty.

I told my manager pretty much as soon as I found out because I needed time off for various doctors appointments and scans as I had early bleeding and I didn't want to lie; I was about 3-4 weeks and he was the first to know, before any family or friends!

38 weeks now and on holiday prior to my maternity leave kicking in. Although I have a good relationship with my manager, I think telling work early meant they appreciated my honesty and have been very flexible about me taking extended holiday and maternity leave as a result. Like pp have said, the moment you tell work you're legally protected from any potential discrimination in the workplace, so I wouldn't worry about it.

And congratulations by the way! Xx

I too am 5 weeks pregnant and wondering when to tell the boss. I work in an office so I don't think there's any H&S need to tell him now but I know I'll need time off for appointments and things. Got my booking appointment (if that's the right term) on 4th August.

Carley27 · 14/07/2017 11:31

I told my boss at 13+2 (two days after my dating scan). I would probably waited longer but I wanted to tell my friends/family and due to mutual acquaintances didn't want him to find out from someone else. I didn't have any sickness though so was easy for me to hide.

We didn't tell anyone until the dating scan as I had bleeding from 7-10ish weeks and if things had gone wrong I think I would have found it easier if people didn't know. Obviously I know things could still go wrong but the risk is lower.

My scan is 21st August - i have a half day book (AM) so will be in the office after mid day - was planning on telling my boss that afternoon so that i can finally be honest and he can stop making me lift heavy things around the office!!

Mandraki · 15/07/2017 19:40

I told mine at 5 weeks because I felt awful and a couple of the girls in work knew/had guessed and I didn't want my boss to hear second hand. She was very good about it and kept it secret until I told everyone myself.

Fairylea · 15/07/2017 19:44

I told mine as soon as I found out (about 5 weeks ish I think) because the role I was in was very physical with lots of heavy lifting.

I told my boss at 6 weeks - I was about to be plied with alcohol at an event, so needed him to know so he could help keep up the charade (sparkling elderflower looked a lot like fizz!)

LJFM2B · 17/07/2017 15:44

@tootsieglitterballs that trick worked with me at a wedding recently ... its so hard isnt it, i usually drink fizz or red wine and recently wasted half a bottle of red that my friend insisted we shared (i took my glass to the toilet each time and chucked it) felt so bad!

Told my boss at 8 weeks as I needed to sign a new contract (my current one was just ending) and I wanted to cut down my hours as the sickness was exhausting me so made sense to explain why.

Amd724 · 17/07/2017 20:44

I had to tell mine at 6 weeks because I needed them to cancel a work trip I had to Manila and Mozambique due to zika. My boss was very understanding, and let me work from home a lot over the last few months. I'll be sitting in interviews for my replacement, and he set the work I should strive to complete before I go on leave, in about three weeks. He's also understanding that I'm going on mat leave early (at 29 weeks) and that I'll use 8.5 weeks of annual leave upon my return, to finish out my contract. I think he realises this will be the last few weeks of work for me while at that job.

Jfw82 · 17/07/2017 21:29

Told mine at 9 weeks as I was getting asked why I was booking medical appointments.... despite my requesting it be confidential she then told three other people including someone I have a dotted reporting line to (without telling me or asking me) so they could look at getting a replacement. (I did subsequently log a complaint with hr)

Lost all trust in my manager as a result as I hadn't wanted it known widely til I was more certain. Another time I'd leave it til as close to 20 weeks as I thought I could hide it
