So far have maybe 8 sleepsuits n bodysuits, few pairs of trousers, few tops. Tonnes of socks, mittens and hats. Coats and cardigans but all in 0-3 months. I figured i would skip new born as the weight range suggests he would be in it for 5 mins..... I dont have any vests though. Do i need these as well as bodysuits??

Oh and four bibs...

Sounds a lot more than I've bought so far! (I've got one or two in newborn but majority in 1-3m). I was told that people tend to buy you loads of clothes as gifts so technically you could probably get away without buying any clothes and also depends entirely on whether you have a dribbly baby but my SiL goes through 10 bibs a day some days!

indigo13 · 04/07/2017 08:30

0-3 is too big for a newborn. I had big babies who weren't in 0-3m until maybe 2 months, various brands. Maybe get some up to 1 month?

HumpHumpWhale · 04/07/2017 08:31

When are you due? If soon, you won't need vests. If November, you will. My DS never fit in newborn stuff. DD did, but for maybe a week. I wouldn't bother. If you unexpectedly have a tiny baby, you can always send someone to tesco or mothercare for a couple of 3-packs of smaller clothes.
Bibs - you'll probably need more when baby gets really drool-y around 12 weeks. Saves you changing the whole outfit because it's soaked in spit. But don't buy any yet. People will give you things like that.

JoWithABow · 04/07/2017 08:32

Depends on the size of your baby and how fast they grow. Mine was in newborn for a good couple of months if not more. 0-3 was more like 3-6 for mine. Have a think about your own height and build and that of the babies dad, might give you a clue as to how big your baby will be

Waggamamma · 04/07/2017 08:32

I made that mistake too. My boy was 9lb 6oz and 0-3 was too big for the first month, his legs kept getting lost in the sleep suits.

Next and M&S do a size '0-1month' or 'up to 1 month' and they fitted perfectly when he was born.

If you have a tiny 7lber or smaller you will need to get newborn.

Friendlylightupbear · 04/07/2017 08:32

It all depends on the size of the baby... My DD was born 7lb11oz, and certainly isn't small, but wasn't in 0-3 clothes until she was about 8 weeks. She was in newborn for about a month, then 'up to 1 month' size. Some shops are more generous in their sizing than others too. It's tricky!

Yes I'd get vests. Vests under sleepsuit/clothes generally.

When is your baby due? My son was born in April, wore 0-3 month clothes for a couple of months, after which we hit a really hot London summer, when he spent most of his time in a nappy under a tree in the park. You sound as if you have loads, but bear in mind the season/temperature it will be when your baby hits a certain clothing age range. We gave away loads of things unworn, because a warm pram suit for a 6 month old is not much use if the baby is six months in high summer. I found Grobag baby sleeping bags, in the appropriate tog for the time of year really useful.

wesleybear83 · 04/07/2017 08:33

My first baby was 7lb13 and I had only bought 0-3 and when he was born they were too big. We bought a few bit in new born as within a week or so he was in 0-3. So this time I have about 5 full sets that have s grower and sleep suit and hat n gloves. I'll just keep washing straight after use.

ASqueakingInTheShrubbery · 04/07/2017 08:33

We only had a few bits of newborn and we managed. DD was a little 5lb mini-baby, so her babygros were all too big, but they don't move about much when they're new so it wasn't much of a problem.

Friendlylightupbear · 04/07/2017 08:33

I never needed bibs, my DD wasn't a dribbler, but i think that's quite rare!

DrSpin · 04/07/2017 08:35

My DS was 8lbs5 and was straight into 0-3 m clothes. We had 2 'one month' sleep suits and that was it for smaller sizes.

It all depends on the size if your baby :)

DrSpin · 04/07/2017 08:36

Oh and DS didn't go into trousers and tops until 4 months. Far too much faff.

ElfEars · 04/07/2017 08:36

My DS was 7lb 8 when he was born then dropped to 7lbs. He was in newborn clothes for about 2 weeks then moved into up to 1 month clothes until he was around 8 weeks. 0-3 month clothes drowned him. I would recommend buying just a couple of basic sleepsuits and and short sleeved bodysuits in up to 1 month just to tie you over. I found that most of the gifts people bought were in 3-6 months as they know that you will have already stocked up on bits for your newborn.

marmitecheesetoast · 04/07/2017 08:40

I had thought this, had only bought 'up to 1 month' stuff thinking there was no way our baby would be less than 8lb when born. She was 6lb 14oz (12 days late!) and the up to 1 month stuff was massive on her - DH had to make a trip to mothercare for 'new baby' sized stuff.

marmitecheesetoast · 04/07/2017 08:40

And agree with PP, most of the clothes people gave as gifts have been 0-3 months and 3-6 months

MommaGee · 04/07/2017 08:43

I'd get some vests in 0-3 and some vests and grows in up to 1 month. Not alto, maybe a pack of each. You could even leave them in the wrapper and return them if you don't need them buy unless baby comes out well over 9lb 0-3 will be a big to start with

user1493413286 · 04/07/2017 08:47

A good way to think about is how many days worth of clothes do you have if you consider that some days a baby might go through 3 sleepsuits due to accidents and dribble. Also how quickly can you wash and dry clothes as if you don't have a tumble dryer you might need more.
I had the same theory about just getting O-3 month clothes but then my baby was born very small so my OH did a quick trip to Tesco. I was quite amazed by how much clothing people bought as presents and wish I'd started stocking up on 3-6 month too as I have loads of newborn and 0-3 but not much after that. You do need vests as even in the summer it can get very cold for babies but they're also useful when it's really warm to just be in them.

Jellybabie3 · 04/07/2017 08:49

Ok thanks all. Hes due end September. Think i will get some 0-3 vests and a few upto 1 month bits. We are both 5 6 average build. No idea obv how big he will be though....Smile

Also look for sleepsuits with built in scratch mits. I found mittens don't stay on and my DS spent his time in hospital with socks over his hands.

FormerlyFrikadela01 · 04/07/2017 08:51

My 7lb5oz was in newborn stuff untill about 8 weeks. I had to buy newborn things because all the gifts we got were either 0-3 or 3-6 becasue everyone assumes youll have loads of newborn.

Another thing to consider is that initially most babies are all scrunched up so even my sister's 9lb baby wore newborn initially until she unscrunched so to speak.

arbrighton · 04/07/2017 08:52

8lb9oz son in newborn now, 0-3 would swamp. He's almost 2 weeks

bluechameleon · 04/07/2017 09:26

My 11lb11oz baby went straight into 0-3 but he did have a few newborn bits that fitted for a couple of weeks so I'd say the vast majority of babies will be in newborn for at least a little while.

MommaGee · 04/07/2017 09:37

Also there scan measurement are rough. Was told DS was 5lb 11 at 34 weeks. He came out a week later 5lb 6oz... So don't take it as gospel that he'll be bigger. And don't underestimate how much you'll get bought especially bibs, vests etx

anxiousandpregnant · 04/07/2017 10:56

I've got in total 6 new-born vests and 6 new-born sleep suits and a couple of new-born outfits, im worrying this isn't enough tbh

peanutbutter310 · 04/07/2017 11:15

'Newborn' isn't the same size across different shops, so my 6lb13 baby grew out of Next and Gap stuff after about 3 weeks weeks, but carried on wearing the John Lewis ones until 5-6 weeks. The 'up to 1 month' size had the longest shelf life as they fitted from soon after birth until about 8 weeks.

I had a couple of newborn bits ready and washed, then sent DH to the shop for more once she'd arrived and it was clear she'd be in them for a while. I also like PP's idea of buying and keeping them in the wrapper so you can swap for a bigger size if you don't need them!
