Please can anyone give me some advice. I am 13+3 and have had on and off bleeding throughout. I've had 4 early scans + 12 week scan my baby is healthy wriggly and a strong heartbeat. I have been told today that I have fluid in my cervix(I've no idea what this is) and my cervix is open half a cm, they are treating this as a threatened miscarriage and said I can't have a stitch until 18-20 weeks as it's not viable?!? I'm scared and feel like I've been sent home to miscarry my first baby? Anyone had anything similar that can offer advice please?

So sorry to hear this op, have they advised anything else such as bed rest ?

kate1989 · 28/06/2017 19:19

Thank you for the reply. They said there's nothing I can do. They said there's nothing to prove bed rest helps. X

Sorry to hear this, hope things work out for the best. Got my fingers crossed for you- it must be such a horrendous and difficult time.

kate1989 · 28/06/2017 19:27

Thank you rubyfeet. I just hope my little warrior keeps on fighting. I have an appointment with a consultant in the morning as I didn't take a lot of what they were saying in this morning x

I may be wrong but I'm sure a stitch can be put in before 18-20 weeks? I would contact them again / go back and ask fir a second opinion with a view to insisting on a stitch

kate1989 · 28/06/2017 19:32

I agree, I called Manchester hospital and they said the earlier the better for a stitch. I am going to speak to consultant tomorrow and insist they do a stitch, if they refuse I will try another hospital as it is at the consultants discretion x

Op don't take no for an answer I had a stitch put in at 13 weeks for threatened miscarriage so it can be done earlier so long as the baby is well and I was put on bed rest too.

I'm not sure if your situation is any different to mine as I didn't have any fluid in my cervix but if the pregnancy is still progressing well then I'd make sure you get some proper advice from your consultant tomorrow as my consultant decided the earlier the better with me.

Hope you get a better outcome with the consultant tomorrow op Flowers

mysecret321 · 28/06/2017 19:41

Shocking that some doctors just send you away! I hope you find a proper doctor! May be worth asking about progesterone pessaries I've heard they can also help good luck 🍀

kate1989 · 28/06/2017 19:42

Thank you for your reply. Can I ask was this your first pregnancy? I am unsure of what the fluid is but they didn't seem to concerned about this.
I can't understand why a stitch wouldn't be viable for me, my baby is healthy and growing as it should be x

Thank you my secret. I will ask them about this tomorrow x

It was my 3rd pregnancy OP

I've seen you mention calling the Manchester hospital are you in the Manchester area?
Stepping hill hospital is quite proactive about doing the cervical stitch early too as far as I know.
I remember someone on one of the boards here having a stitch done around the 12 week mark there.

kate1989 · 28/06/2017 19:52

Thanks barrytheunicorn ..

Yes my hospital is tameside but I spoke to st Mary's in Manchester who said about a second opinion. My consultation is at tameside tomorrow but I will go to stepping hill if I don't get very far.

Again thank you all for your comments x

I had a feeling the name Tameside would pop up.

Why don't you try and phone maternity triage at Stepping Hill tonight and see if they would see you tonight they might not but it might be worth a try. (Just phone the main switch board and ask to be transferred)
If you have no joy you could go back through the switch board and ask to be transferred to the supervisor of midwives who might be able to help more.

Also if your appointment with the consultant is later in the day tomorrow you could also see if could get an emergency appointment with your GP and ask to be admitted to the antenatal unit at Stockport for urgent review?

If you do see your consultant and Tameside tomorrow and they don't agree to stitch it might be worth getting stubborn and demanding that they transfer you to St Mary's or Stepping Hill. Just say you're not leaving until they get your transferred. If they won't help just demand to see the supervisor of midwives.

Best of luck tomorrow op sorry you're in such a rubbish situation

kate1989 · 28/06/2017 20:07

Thank you. I will do that. My appointment is at 8:50 am tomorrow. I will go to this and demand to be transferred if I don't get anywhere. I have wrote a list of questions I have for tomorrow as I didn't take a lot in today I was in such shock x

Hope you get some better answers tomorrow op.
Just remember to ask for the supervisor of midwives if you aren't getting anywhere they're usually pretty good at getting things sorted

kate1989 · 28/06/2017 20:11

Thank you so much. I wouldn't have even thought to ask about that. X

Oh OP, I didn't want to read and run but I have no advice other than to not stop demanding; be as pushy as you can, this is your baby. Good luck with tomorrow. Hand hold and sending love Flowers

kate1989 · 28/06/2017 23:44

Thank you justanotheryoungmother, I hope I get somewhere tomorrow. Thank you all for your kind words xx

Personally I would complain to the hospital board. Thankfully I never needed the stitch but when I had a bleed at 8 weeks, they said I might need it incase I had an open cervix and a consultant was called to talk me through everything (this was all for nothing and before they had even checked my cervix by the way). I was told the longer you wait for a stitch, the less chance it works. Definitely don't take no as an answer and as for bed rest, it definitely does help. That's why they put you on bed rest if you have leaking fluid etc x

kate1989 · 29/06/2017 06:30

Thank you harleysmammy, sorry to hear about your problems too. I don't understand why they have told me to wait when everywhere I read it says the earlier the better for the stitch. Xx

I haven't had this issue, but my ds was born prem and I've had monitoring to check I don't need the stitch this time. This started quite early as they said it would need to be done by 18 weeks to be fully effective.

However, they were reluctant in my first pregnancy as they asked if I wanted more children and said it can affect ability to carry further children. I didn't ask further so don't know why or how.

Good luck today - I hope you get the answers you're looking for.

imip · 29/06/2017 09:32

I've had 4 stitches all done by 18 weeks. I think the earliest was 14 weeks. I do notice now that they prefer to wait to put in a stitch but they can put one in up to 3cm dialated. Different hospitals will have different procedures, so calling around as advised above is a good option.

Sorry you are going through this. Do they suspect the fluid is the membranes rupturing? If so, they will not put in a stitch, the infection risk would be too great. I do assume that is why they are not doing it now. Have you been checked to see if it is amniotic fluid?

imip · 29/06/2017 09:34

Re-reading, you do need to ask if the fluid is amniotic fluid. You need clarification on this. If it is, they cannot put in a stitch, I'm sorry. I was in this position at 21 weeks.

They can do a check to see if it is amniotic fluid. They must explain this to you clearly.

Barrytheunicorn · 29/06/2017 16:00

Hi op hope you got some answers today Flowers

kate1989 · 29/06/2017 17:34

Hi everyone, just to update. I went to tameside today to be simply told 'they got it wrong' my cervix is closed but there was a bit of fluid there. As you can imagine I'm so relieved however very angry with the hospital. I am going to get my care transferred to stepping hill hospital. Thank you all for your kind words xx
