Hi :) I have my 12 week scan this week and am very excited. I can't wait to start buying a few small bits but is it too soon?
When did you start buying things for your baby?

I have my 12 week scan tomorrow (eek!) and will go straight to shop (if all ok) and get a nice little vest and a little toy.
Then will gradually work my way through getting little bits like muslins, vests, socks, bottles etc but nothing big or expensive (pram steriliser etc) til after 20 week scan.
That's what I did with DS.
I know some people wouldn't buy anything til much later in the pregnancy but I don't believe that me buying things will affect health of baby. Good luck Smile

Whenever you want to! I bought a few bits after 12 weeks, and then a few pretty dresses after a gender scan at 16 weeks. For big purchases I waited until after 20 weeks but honestly it's entirely your choice. It's normal to be excited! Congratulations.

Matildatoldsuchdreadfullies · 26/06/2017 18:02

Depends on how superstitious you are, really.

In all other aspects of my life I'm the opposite of superstitious, but when I'm pregnant I refuse to buy until I hit 28 weeks.

I also don't buy for other people until the baby is safely delivered.

It's a matter for you.

TheVanguardSix · 26/06/2017 18:05

Whenever you want!

But it's good to get past the anomaly scan at 20 weeks .

Kitcaty · 26/06/2017 18:05

Thank you. I was thinking id wait until after 20 weeks to get the expensive stuff but may take a trip out this week to get a few small neutral bits of clothes. My sister in law thinks it's to early but like you say, buying stuff doesn't hurt the baby.
Good luck for your scan tomorrow! Mines on Friday

I started about a week after I found out I was pregnant. Long before the 12 week scan.

Kicked it off with a cute toy, then waited a few weeks and started on other items. Wanted to spread the cost and have everything ready in plenty of time.

Though it's not nice to think about, you'll have to evaluate how you expect to handle things if anything did go wrong, though.

buying stuff doesn't hurt the baby

I left it very late to buy things. It wasn't out of superstition, but that if I'd miscarried I wouldn't have wanted a lot of baby things in the house to deal with.

Kitcaty · 26/06/2017 18:35

Such a confusing time

Do what's right for you. We waited until 32 weeks to get a cot and nappies etc and I gave birth a 34 weeks!!

Not saying that will happen to you but maybe getting things over time will help as you're not committing to a time limit.

PinkHeart5911 · 26/06/2017 19:00

Whenever you like!

Nothing you do in regards to buying things will effect the outcome of your pregnancy.

With my 2 dc we had everything by time I was 6 months pregnant, even the nurseries were painted & ready.
I am now 13 weeks pregnant with my 3rd dc and I already have a little teddy I saw that I couldn't resist and a surname baby towel.

welshweasel · 26/06/2017 19:06

I bought stuff as and when, but nothing got taken out of boxes or had tags removed until DS was safely here. Buying stuff won't have any effect on the outcome of your pregnancy but I figured if the worst happened someone else could clear everything out and return it for me.

Nursery got done when he was about 4 months old, just before I went back to work. Not that he slept in it for a while after that though.

Orangedaisy · 26/06/2017 19:09

While buying stuff is fun I would urge you to acquire stuff from people you know. There is so much quality baby stuff out there that's hardly used. If you are ok using preloved stuff let it be known and stuff will come flooding in. I was given 4 bags of nice baby clothes and a bugaboo free once a distant colleague heard I was happy with second hand.

Kitcaty · 26/06/2017 19:46

Oh yes, I have no problem with second hand stuff. Our best friend is giving us their cot, which is great. I feel awkward asking for stuff tho

I bought a few clothes and small bits straight after I left the hospital for 12 week scan, I couldn't help myself.

I would probably leave off buying the bigger bits (Cot,Pram) until a bit later on. I bought these bits after my 20 week scan but obviously you can buy whatever whenever you like.

Good luck with everything 😊

Cagliostro · 26/06/2017 19:53

I have my 20 week scan tomorrow and I'll be starting to get a few bits afterwards assuming all is ok. I have been very anxious this pregnancy, and I didn't feel right buying anything yet. All I've bought so far is a couple of maternity bits for myself due to my shape changing.

Can't actually remember what I did with DC1 (she's 10 now) but I suspect I didn't wait that long!

Cagliostro · 26/06/2017 19:54

BTW the reason I'm buying some bits tomorrow is that DD made me promise I'd let her choose some clothes for her little brother or sister (we will be finding out which it is too)

MrsD79 · 26/06/2017 19:55

After 1st scan. Theres millions of things you think you need for a 1st child so you hit the shops asap. The reality is you barely use half of it. Stick to clothes at first couple of newborn sizes 3-6. 6-9. Dont get loads of shoes like me. I had steraliser bottles the lot. I breastfed for 2 years so that was a waste. Nappies. Olive oil to bath them. A crib. Car seat. Cot. Check out clevamama they have quirky cool stuff. The cot bedding as thats quite pricey. Decorate nursery with new carpet wallpaper wardrobes etc. Enjoy cus it goes super fast!

Orangedaisy · 26/06/2017 19:58

I don't think you have to ask for second hand-once people know you're pregnant they will offer if they want rid of stuff. I am waiting patiently for someone to need nice girl stuff. Want it to go to someone who will use it and appreciate it so if I come across an excited pregnant woman I will ask if they are interested in second hand.

Lemondrop99 · 26/06/2017 20:24

It's very personal. I was so excited after my positive pregnancy test that I wanted to out immediately and start spending! I knew it wasn't sensible so planned on holding off till after my 12 week scan.

Funnily, after that, the urge to shop had dropped and I decided to put it off until after my 20 week scan (although I did buy one baby grow).

Now at 26 weeks, I've started on the nursery and spending is in full flow 😆

mintich · 26/06/2017 20:52

I started buying after my 12 week scan! Just a few bits but most purchases were after 20 week...I found out the sex

Kitcaty · 26/06/2017 21:02

My husband thinks that if we start buying stuff after the 12 week scan then it will feel like a really long wait until the baby is here. He's also worried what size clothes to start buying as doesnt know how big the baby will be haha bless him, is this just excuses not to go shopping??

Lolabee · 26/06/2017 21:06

I'm 15+4 and put the deposit down for my pram/travel system last Friday. BUT that's only cause I found a fantastic deal by chance on the pram set I really want. (Silver cross pioneer)
Having said that the shop knows I won't be paying more off until the anomaly scan on 31st July x
(As long as it's paid by end of October they aren't fussed when it's paid)

Kittysparks1 · 26/06/2017 21:12

The 12 weeks scan me and my fella brought a little outfit for baby. The 20 weeks scan we brought a second outfit. Then about about 4 weeks ago I brought the baby some books. I will now not buy anything else. I have so much donated stuff, it's shocking how desperate people are to offload their baby bits! I have 3 bin bags of clothes , a lot still has tags, a pushchair, Moses basket, steriliser, car seat, everything. I've got 9 weeks left and my partners ma wants to buy us something and won't take no for an answer so she will be buying the cot. I've spent about 30 quid.
I have been so lucky.
I would hold off for a bit and see what you get donated first. X

Pixiedust2017 · 26/06/2017 22:15

I had my 12 week scan last week and have been adamantly stating I will not be buying anything other than necessities prior to birth and nothing before 27 weeks...
But yesterday I saw a bargin on cloth nappies (23 for £30!!) on a community buy/sell website and had to get them as they will be saving us several hundred ££ so...

Confuseddot · 27/06/2017 07:15

Started buying at 12 weeks. Basically have everything except a next 2 me Crib at nearly 18 weeks. It's whenever you want to and what your budget allows you. We wanted to get baby stuff out the way so we can decorate the house ready for her arrival x
