Hardly any baby movement at 40 +3?

Hello, just a bit of advice for a worries (maybe just paranoid) first time future mum. My due date is Sunday (4 days from now) and I'm a little worried about the baby moving.

I haven't felt him move much (though I know I felt him kick yesterday) and I can't remember him kicking or moving much over the past few days. I have felt him move but not kick today but only once or twice. He is normally kicking or moving constantly, should I be worried?

I hasn't seen my midwife since about 35 weeks as they cancelled my last one due to over booking and the hospital don't have any appointments either, but I'm going to call in a bit just to ask but wanted some advice first.

Is less movement so close to the end normal? Ive googled it and Some people have said yes some have said no..

Any advice from people who experienced the same so close?

Whereabouts in the country are you OP? It's awful that you can't see a midwife for the rest of your pregnancy!

FutureMummmmmmyx · 21/06/2017 14:09

Hello everyone. I'm sorry for no updates, I have been at the hospital having it all checked out. Even though I haven't been feeling them, he was moving around perfectly and has a good strong heartbeat. But atleast I have peace of mind now.

They have given me a last minute appointment for tomorrow afternoon for a proper check up, they couldn't believe that I hadn't been seen since 35 weeks. So hopefully I'll have a scan tomorrow, have all my questions answered and can have some more peace of mind.

Thank you for all the advice everyone! Xx

Brilliant. Well done for going in, glad they looked after you. Good luck, not long to go now! Smile

CherriesInTheSnow · 21/06/2017 14:12

Well done mummmmmy, so glad everything is okay and that they are looking after you :) Flowers

amymel2016 · 21/06/2017 14:16

Brilliant! So pleased everything is okSmile

MadameJosephine · 21/06/2017 14:35

That's great news, glad you and your baby are ok. Flowers

I would still consider making a complaint though, both about the 'advice' given out by the receptionist and the fact that you've basically had no antenatal care for the last 6 weeks Angry

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 21/06/2017 14:36

Great newsSmile

I think a complaint to practice manager is in order.

honeysucklejasmine · 21/06/2017 14:43

Oh thank goodness. My jaw dropped at what the receptionist said. It's sooooo wrong. any change in movement needs to be investigated, more or less!

I had an anterior placenta last time as it was hard to feel them, but it's so important to keep track. My friend is a midwife and says in approx 90% of the stillbirths that come in, the mother says movements had slowed.

rizlett · 21/06/2017 14:55

My daughter hardly moved at all in the last few weeks - it was because she was huge with really long legs and there was no room for maneuver. Hope all goes well with your and your fb.

eurochick · 21/06/2017 14:57

I'm glad all seems well.

Can you email your GP practice about what the receptionist said? That is terrible advice and could have tragic consequences.

Theyhaveallbeenused2 · 21/06/2017 14:57

Please go get checked over

RandomMess · 21/06/2017 14:59

Please keep going back if you feel things aren't right. So pleased that things are ok.

Yes make a complaint, any change in movements whether increase or decrease should be checked out.

Theyhaveallbeenused2 · 21/06/2017 14:59

Should have read thread before responding..glad all is well. Cannot believe the receptionist she is clearly wrong

Misspilly88 · 21/06/2017 15:00

Please complain about the receptionist. Have a look at count the kicks website. Her advice was totally inappropriate and if she gives it out again it might not end up so happily.

Lemondrop99 · 21/06/2017 15:15

Thank goodness. I'm so glad you went in and got checked, and even happier that everything is ok. They should be horrified that you haven't been seen since 35 weeks!! I hope they treat you to first class serve for the last of your pregnancy.

Please do consider raising concerns about that receptionist though. While she was trying to be reassuring, she is giving very dangerous advice. Imagine if she says that to another woman who listens to her, doesn't get checked and there's something wrong 😕

Gothbaby · 21/06/2017 15:36

I say ring your triage and get some advice! If you are worried the best thing to do is check it out (at the hospital). However... a lot of mums I know have said that they fought a lot less movements after 38 weeks purely because there's less room for the baby move around. Xx

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 21/06/2017 15:44

I say rtftWink

BringMeTea123 · 21/06/2017 16:52

Hi

It's an old wives tale that the baby's movement slows down towards the end. My mum is a sod for old wives tales and told this to me. My son never slowed down, even while I was in labour. I went in a fair few times to get him checked as he had his quiet days. He was born back to back though so I think that's why he was so active.

Thats rubbish that you haven't been seen since 35 weeks. Glad you've got an appointment now! They are so important. Any change at all is always worth getting checked, you just never know! You feel silly after you've bee and baby goes crazy making you look crazy but it's not worth the risk. I don't think you'll get a scan tomorrow will you? Unless you've got complications?

All the best x

Jasmine1111 · 21/06/2017 16:57

I am so happy you went to get checked.

But please please complain about that receptionist. I had a stillborn baby three days before he was due and I am absolutely horrified that an unqualified person thinks they can give out advice based on their own anecdotal evidence.

My movements reduced but I thought it was normal. It's not. This message needs to get out there to people.

ICanTuckMyBoobsInMyPockets · 21/06/2017 17:25

Just to pile in with an extra bit of advice I was given.

I went in for reduced movement monitoring at 33 weeks, thankfully all was fine.

The advice to have a cold drink, lie on your side, jump up and down etc to try and get baby to move, is also now outdated and you shouldn't do this either.

Baby's movements should be completely spontaneous and you should be checked at your local MAU.

They also said I could go back in an hour/day/week if I still wasn't happy with baby's movements. Basically, never ever be put off.

Glad all is well. Good luck with the rest of your pregnancy x

Cagliostro · 21/06/2017 17:38

I'm glad everything is ok OP and really glad you have been given a long overdue appointment! Ridiculous not to be seen in so many weeks.

Very pleased I've read this thread too - I had some of those old wives tales in my head, but I'm more aware now. I'm 19wks with #3 but the others were born 10/8 years ago so I've forgotten everything!

MadisonAvenue · 21/06/2017 18:07

So glad that all is well OP!

It's a long time since I had my babies, is it still supposed to be weekly midwife appointments after 36 weeks? Pretty sure that, back in the dark ages, it was every two weeks after 28 weeks and weekly after 36.

arbrighton · 21/06/2017 18:21

@MadisonAvenue

It's 2 weekly from 34 then weekly after 40 now

(although I have had last one at 38 since I'm being induced at 38+2, tomorrow!)

FacelikeaBagofHammers · 22/06/2017 09:53

Delighted to hear all is well. Make sure to update us after the birth :)

And I echo everyone else when they say to log a complaint about that receptionist!!!!!

MadisonAvenue · 22/06/2017 10:49

arbrighton Good luck for today! Thanks for updating me too, it was 2000 when I had my last baby so things change.
