I'm walking like an old lady! Is this SPD?

I'm just wondering if this is normal. I have had some serious pain in my pelvis area over the past couple of weeks (it feels like my fango is going to split in half!). Yesterday it got worse as I walked for a few miles in heels (not sensible I know) and this morning it's really bad and I can't walk properly or stand up straight. The pain is all round my hips and back, but worse on the front where the pubic hair is (sorry if TMI !!). Does this sound like SPD? What should I do? Can the dr or mw do anything? I had really bad hip pain when pg last time, but nothing compared to this.

BTW I am 27 weeks pg.

It might be SPD - I have just been diagnosed with it (am 17 weeks). To me it feels like my hip isn't sitting properly in my pelvis - the whole joint feels really weak and painful. Turning over in bed is really hard as well - my pelvis makes this horrible clunking noise!! I went to my GP and she has referred me to a women's physiotherapy unit - and while I'm waiting for my appt I've been to see an osteopath, which has definitely helped.

I'd definitely go and see your midwife or GP, hopefully they will be able to refer you. If you're in pain it's definitely worth a trip - no point suffering alone. Lots of people on here seem to have had success with osteopaths or chiropracters too. Expensive, but worth it I reckon.

Good luck, hope you get it sorted soon.

twelveyeargap · 21/03/2007 09:05

I've got this. The sore hip and the "hot knives in the fanny" feeling. (Sorry, it IS how it feels!)

Osteo helps. I keep forgetting to tell my midwife when I see her. May try and get a couple of physio sessions in. Am nearly 32 weeks and really ought to have had it seen to ages ago instead of suffering.

I do think it's SPD.

hollyandalice · 21/03/2007 09:09

Thanks, I thought it was spd! The hot knives thing is just how it feels, really horrid burny pain! I think I'll phone my mw today and hopefully she'll come and see me. I don't think I could make it to the surgery! I feel so old and creaky and keep making funny grunty noises everytime I move! It would be funny if it weren't so painful!

sounds like spd. ask for referal to physio?

thehairybabysmum · 21/03/2007 09:12

does sound like it...ask your midwife for a referral to the womens physio at your local hospital, mw should be able to get you a quick referral.

lots of tips on here if you do a search for managing it but afraid you will have to ditch the heels and do as little walking as possible.

Personally i found accupuncture really releieved my symptoms but this is not the cheapest option.

Fraid you cant really get rid of it, but is all about managing...main tips, sleep with a pillow between your knees, whenever sitting up or getting out of car type movements swing legs round rather than separating legs. I was also told no hoovering!

hollyandalice · 21/03/2007 09:14

HOORAY!! No hoovering!!

Thanks for the advice, I'll ring the mw now.

i call it knitting needle throgh the ligaments!!

hollyandalice · 21/03/2007 09:21

I've made an appt to see the mw tomorrow. I think it might just be a case of paracetamol and feet up today! Unfortunately my dd has crumbled her toast over the floor so I may have to hoover! Grrr...!

BTW will it get any worse? I've read horror stories of people ending up in wheelchairs and having to have spinal blocks during labour because of spd. I really want a home birth, will this affect it?

OP posts:
KitKat30 · 21/03/2007 09:33

Don't hoover!! Toast crumbs can wait!!

My osteopath told me to put an ice pack (or bag of frozen peas!) over the sore area. Might help you for today?!?

prawnsmum · 21/03/2007 09:43

I had this when pregnant and ended up on crutches as is was too painful to put any weight on my right leg so I feel your pain!! It was at its worse when lying down at night could not turn over in bed without the help of my DH!
Got signed off work for 3 months and attended physio every week during that time. Make sure its in your notes if you do have it so you get the proper care when in labour!!
You'll get a list of things not to do like hoovering loading the washing machine(so pretty much any housework
try to rest and no walking in heels!!!

hollyandalice · 21/03/2007 09:57

Prawnsmum did it make your labour more difficult?

OP posts:
prawnsmum · 21/03/2007 10:16

I was my fist baby but I would say no. I had a great midwife who knew all about the condition so made sure I didnt get into any positions which would in the end do more damage. It turned out my DS was OP so after quite a few hours I ended up with an epidural as the pain of that was so bad!! even with that she made sure my legs stayed in the correct position IYSWIM (sorry dont want to be too graphic!!) My physio advised that I tried to stay active throughout labour which I did and if possible use the birthing pool as this is supposed to really help but when I arrived at the hospital someone else was already in there!
As long as you get the correct care you'll be fine just make sure everyone involved in your labour and birth know you have this condition.

hollyandalice · 21/03/2007 10:21

That's good! I was planning on a home water birth, so I suppose it can still go ahead as planned! I guess the water is good as it supports your joints. Thanks!

prawnsmum · 21/03/2007 10:30

Yeah that sounds perfect then. Make sure you get reffered to physio as it really does help! Even if its just for them to tell you the do's and dont's. Good luck

naturelover · 21/03/2007 12:09

I am 17 weeks and beginning to wonder if I have spd as well - am seeing GP later today to find out. I hate the idea of walking less (I walk everywhere) but I love the no-housework recommendation. Your suggestions are all really helpful.

thehairybabysmum · 21/03/2007 12:31

i really struggled with the inactivveness of not walking too when i had it, i did manage to keep cycling though to work everyday (necessity as work is 2 miles away and no car) and you can still swim just not breast stroke.

On the plus side it is generally only temporary, mine went immediately on birth...even after an emergency c/s i still felt better 1 day after than 1 day before birth.

Im pg again and am dreading getting it again as it is likely to be worse and earlier 2nd time

prawnsmum · 21/03/2007 20:00

how did you get on at the docs naturelover?

Thanks for asking prawnsmum. My GP had gone home sick so I didn't see her. Rang mw this am and she thinks it's probably not SPD (as this is my first baby and it's quite early too - 17 wks). She thinks probably just ligaments stretching, urged me to rest and if it gets worse ring her again. It's nice being told to rest, I'm very tired but am the sort of person who feels guilty about putting her feet up.

KitKat30 · 22/03/2007 12:48

naturelover - if you feel like it's SPD then I would push to see your GP again. I'm only 17 weeks with my 1st baby and have just been diagnosed with SPD by my GP and osteopath! It's early but it can happen unfortunately.

Hope it isnt SPD for you x

hollyandalice · 22/03/2007 14:49

Just been to mw. She thinks I do have spd, but cannot refer me as there is no obstetric physio in Southampton due to lack of funds! If I was referred to a regular physio the wait would be so long I would have had my baby before my appt!! So I'm a bit cross and will just have to deal with it! Oh well! Thanks for your advice everyone !

KitKat30 · 22/03/2007 14:58

oh no! Can you see an osteopath or chiropracter privately?

Mumbojumbo · 22/03/2007 15:00

If you could go privately, I would really recommend it. I had SPD with both my pregnancies and it continued after I'd given birth too. I had treatment before and after and it really helped manage the symptoms.

hollyandalice · 22/03/2007 15:03

I can't afford to see one privately ! My mw has given me some tips on how to deal with it, so I'll give them a go and hope it doesn't get any worse. ATM I can deal with it, I just hope it stays like this!

i had spd it was awful i had physio with both pregnancys i got it very early in second pregnancy and sorry to say alot worse i couldnt work and found even simple tasks like taking washing upstairs impossible i ended up with a maternity belt to support the bump and take pressure off my pelvis it was very unflattering but it did help!! make sure its in your notes my mw grabbed my leg while in labour and put it on her shoulder i thought she was goin to split me in half till my boyfriend screamed at her to put my leg down!! it wasnt her fault it was not in my notes!!
