Telling OH you're pregnant - how did you do it?

I was going through some threads on here and something reminded me of the time I found out I was pregnant and how I called my husband at work to tell him. He was at a meeting so whispered 'that's nice' and said he'd call me back. 🙄

That got me wondering. How did you all do it? Did any of you go all out and prepare an elaborate surprise announcement?

Kept it quiet that I was doing the test and didn't make it out of the bathroom in time before DH left for work so I had to wait all day and tell him when he got home.

My voice came out all squeaky and weird when I tried to tell him so the first thing he said was "What??", and when I managed to repeat it I got "I don't believe you" and then (jokingly) "It isn't mine". Haha, we are both soooo romantic!!!!

I think poor DH was in a bit of shock, we had only just started trying and I'd told him it could take 6 months to a year...!

snoopypoodle · 15/06/2017 13:47

We started trying 3 weeks before and didn't expect anything to happen for at least a few months. Found an old pregnancy test when cleaning the bathroom and as a joke peed on it and it came out positive I was Shock
Did another 2 that I picked up on the way to work and told him that night when he was at the kitchen table he was shocked for a sec as we both didn't expect it so soon and then got up and gave me a big cuddle and said how happy he was.

BayLeaves · 15/06/2017 14:10

The first time, I went to the bakery and bought a Belgian bun, which I left in the oven with the light on told him to go and have a look when he came home from work... Took him a while to get it, so it was a bit of an anticlimax as I had to really spell it out to him Hmm

The second time, I put my toddler in his cot and taped an "eviction notice" to the side saying please vacate this cot by 27th May when the new tenant is expected to arrive. Then I took a picture and sent it to my husband at work. That was a pretty good one as we now have that photo in the album I made of that year.

I didn't do a gimmicky announcement for friends and family though, just wanted to do something silly and playful for DH.

purpleviolet1 · 15/06/2017 14:11

It was our first cycle trying, I had told DH it could take months and months to fall pregnant given some health issues I had. I did a test and put it under his pillow. Then told him to have a look under his pillow whilst I popped out the room for a second (don't know why I did this? Maybe was nervous to see his reaction) when I came back in he had this shocked but very happy look. He was over the moon. That pregnancy resulted in a traumatic miscarriage unfortunately at 12 weeks.

Second time I did a test at work. When I saw him after work I showed him a picture of the test. We were both cautiously excited. Unfortunately this resulted in a miscarriage too at 6+4.

Third time I had been to hospital out of hours/ A&E for a nasty infection. They asked if I could be pregnant and I said no as I thought it would be too early to test. That evening though after we got home I thought what if... did a test and it was positive. I panicked that the medications they prescribed at hospital wouldn't be safe. DH was sleeping so my first thought was to get on the phone to the hospital. He overheard me on the phone telling them I was pregnant. This pregnancy was a rollercoaster with bleeding between 9-14 weeks. Thankfully though we got through it and we have a beautiful 12 week old Smile

"Can you read the instructions, I think this might be positive"

Blumkin · 15/06/2017 14:19

First pregnancy (total accident, we were using contraception) - Sat in the sofa sobbing, wailing about how I didn't do it on purpose, my pill had failed, apologising profusely. He just hugged me and told me it was the best news ever, sat there trying to comfort me and holding back his grin. (Had a miscarriage)

Second pregnancy - took a test the day we were flying out on holiday, came back positive. So told him once we'd arrived at our hotel

Third pregnancy - I thought I had some weird flu viral infection. He told me I was pregnant as he recognised the symptoms.

Fourth pregnancy. I got a moonpig card made with his name on, a picture of him swimming in the pool. Inside message said 'congratulations, your swimmers have won the race, prize to be delivered in 9 months'.... sadly he couldn't work out the clues and spent the whole evening trying to puzzle it out Grin

TheWeatherGirl1 · 15/06/2017 14:59

Walked into living room brandishing wet stick, burst into tears and then yelled
'I think I might be pregnant but I don't know cos I've thrown the instructions away '.

Ilovewillow · 15/06/2017 15:17

My husband was there when I took the test. Sadly we had IVF for both our children so there wasn't a lot of romance in either the conception or the news!! Loving some of these though!

Thattwatoverthere · 15/06/2017 15:35

We weren't even nearly trying and had done it once unprotected so it wasn't even on his radar. My conversation went a bit like...
Him: are you on yet
Me: No
Him: oh ok
Me: I've done a test and I am and oh my god blah blah blah (with ugly crying)
Him: stood at the sink wondering what the fuck I was on about.

He was happy in the end when I managed to breathe and say the word pregnant.

Wasn't my dream reveal to be honest but got the job done.

Defuzzing · 15/06/2017 15:45

We had been ttc for some time. I did the test and saw the "positive" and started screaming in excitement. DH was watching the Six Nations and thought I had seen a mouse. Hmm I have no idea why. I came running down stairs and we were excitedly dancing around the living room together as the Welsh National Anthem was being sang Grin

Thingymaboob · 15/06/2017 15:51

My DH and I suspected as I had gone off coffee and I accused him of being really smelly. He went shopping in town, I peed on an internet cheaply which was a squinted. I marched out to Asda to get a first response, then I got the bus into town and showed him the test

Kittysparks1 · 15/06/2017 19:57

My poor fella. I did a test on Christmas Day (refused to do one before as wanted to get pissed on Christmas Eve!), we had been trying for a baby for a total of 17 days and I had been on the pill previously for 25 years so I had convinced myself the sore boobs and late period was something else.

Anyway, got up hanging on Christmas Day, announced I was going to do the test, returned 3 minutes later, crawled into bed next to him and sobbed for a good hour. I think it was shock. He didn't know what to do/say so just held me, bless him.

I watch films and hear other people's stories but in honesty I was terrified. I assumed we would at least have a few months of trying and getting our heads around it before it actually happened!

buzz91 · 15/06/2017 20:43

He was away for the weekend at his parents and he's a massive worrier and I knew he couldn't hide something like that while he was there, so I waited until he got back 2 days later. I told him to sit down, went out the room and then handed him the four pregnancy tests from behind my back with a nervous smile on my face.

We'd been trying for 5 months and this was the first month that I hadn't convinced myself that I was pregnant,.

Cagliostro · 15/06/2017 20:48

DC1, we waited the 3 minutes together after I (privately!) POAS. Looked together although the line had actually come up instantly so I'd already seen (just refused to believe it until the 3 minutes was up!).

DC2, I took it when DH was at work and when he got home I said I had a present for him - it was our anniversary - and handed him the (cleaned!) test.

DC3, I waited until he came into our room and threw the test at him.

In case you hadn't guessed, DC3 was not planned :o :o

ememem84 · 15/06/2017 20:57

I'd been feeling weird for a while and after a particularly boozy week just to rule it out did a test. It was positive.

I then wandered into the other room and said to dh "so you know I was feeling weird....I know why....?"

He'd made plans to meet a friend that afternoon so went out and left me on my own.

I sat and cried and ate my body weight in crisps I was in shock. Good shock.

TheLegendOfBeans · 15/06/2017 21:05

Feb 14th 2017

8am: POAS - yay positive!
From midday: dried it off on the radiator
5pm: wrote valentines card, inserted stick into card
6pm: realise I've not cleaned stick just dried it
7pm: DH opens card, sees stick, is delighted, then not so delighted when I tell him he might want to wash his hands

AnyFarrahFowler · 15/06/2017 21:28

With DS, our first, I bought a babygrow and put it in a box for him to open - he'd been away with work for 4 days so was delighted with the idea that I'd bought him a little "welcome home" present. It did take a little while for his expression to change from shocked to pleased...but he got there!!
Currently pregnant with DD - I gave DS the positive stick to hold, then passed him to DH and said "X has something he wants to tell you".
As we'd been actively trying, he wasn't shocked, just really pleased.

A little off topic but I am obsessed with watching gender reveals on YouTube Blush The bigger, louder, more extravagant and American, the better!! Grin

FavouriteWasteofSlime · 15/06/2017 21:40

Peed on stick, showed him. We'd been trying so he was really happy.

glastogal · 15/06/2017 21:44

Ivf pregnancy.. so I had a specified test date. Naturally, I couldn't last that long and tested early. So I sent him a text and he knew immediately I had been naughty 😀

SAMlady · 15/06/2017 21:46

First time knocked on shower door and showed him the stick. Sadly I started bleeding by lunchtime Sad
Second time knocked on shower door and showed him the stick. Sadly lost this one just three days later Sad
Third time knocked on shower door, he said 'oh god you only do that when you're pregnant' which is true, and I'm 36 + 2 today Smile almost made it! Xxx

mistletoeprickles · 15/06/2017 21:52

After many months of clomid and 2 losses I was 3 days late.
Went on the school run and then brought a test. DP called me as I'd been so long, marched past him and into the loo.
I then shouted; there's a line and I haven't even finished my wee!
A little too loud as our neighbour also heard Grin

sparechange · 15/06/2017 21:58

I was so nervous/excited about testing that I woke up at 4am and couldn't get back to sleep
Tested around 5am and checked it under the torch on my phone, and saw it was a bfn so went to sleep disappointed

Then woke up and thought I should have another look. Saw the second line, so shook DH awake and shoved a pissy stick in his face

WithCheesePlease · 15/06/2017 22:02

I got one of those crappy cheap sticks as I didn't really believe I was pregnant. I couldn't tell what the result was, showed it to him, neither of us had a clue! Went to the shop together and bought a good one with actual words so that was much better!

AccioHappiness · 15/06/2017 22:35

SAMlady that's wonderful! x
