Just wondered what you find a waste of money and will not be buying this time round!? Could be items that were for the baby or you, before baby (PG) and after!

OP posts:

oh also am not going to bother with fireguards, stair gates, sockets covers, door stoppers etc much prefer to be vigilant. may have one stair gate on the kitchen door, but not sure yet.

mad4girls · 22/03/2007 22:46

i think it depends on the baby the style of house you have and whether they are a PFB

things i found most valuable were
stair gate searched the country for a babydan multi gate as we had kitchen diner and dd2 liked to turn oven on drink toliet water and dance on the sideboard(we also had a step down to kitchen)

another gate we had was the kiddyguard kind of like a roller blind was also the only one that would fit our landing and the only 1 dd1 coudltn open

uselelss things

swinging crib- never swung the damn thing ever!
baby monitor used religously with dd1 but never used for dd2?
microwave streliser bought when pregnant first time i treid to use it 2 months later realised it didnt fit in our microwave
buying matching crib bedding to the nursery when the crib was in our room plus we always used a sleeping bag, why?
another big waste of time was a playpen plus babywalker she screamed when i put her in either sold the pair for £50 on ebay though so cant complain

Nappy Bin - Total waste of money, i've never used it.

Changing Mat - just buy a travel one or use the one that you get with your changing bag, its cheaper and easier.

Baby Bath - Only used it once, its too messy, its easier to bath them in the sink, lol.

Cot mobile - Bought one, still haven' put it on the cot and he's 6mo old.

Couple to add having thought of them AFTER i posted, lol.

Bottle warmer - I just boil the kettle, open the lid and drop the bottle in the kettle.. Voila hot milk (make sure you give it a shake)

Baby swing - it was handy for all of ooohh. 2 weeks?

Clothes wise - Coats.. really, its not safe to have a coat on them in a carseat, just get them a little jumper and tuck a blanket around them. The only time they're useful is if you walk them everywhere in the buggy.

nappyaddict · 22/03/2007 23:18

can't believe i forgot about the totally useless bottlewarmer!!

tryingfortwo · 23/03/2007 07:34

The changing bag, spent about 50 quid on it and used it once, totally useless and ugly, would have been better going and getting a really big beautiful bag from Frasers.

And breast pads, don't think I used these once, I'm still coming across them here and there.

Disposable weaning cups and bags for freezing breast milk - Expressed only when I had to, i.e. was away from dd. All good in theory but sitting for hours pumping away is not a good look.

Walker - totally and utterly useless, her feet couldn't touch the floor, never used it once - think that was about 50 quid too.

But things I really did find useful:

Loved the wee outfits, still look at them awing and aahhing as they hang in her wardrobe

Loved the mobile, my mother bought it for me when she wasn't sleeping and it woudl send her off every time, great item.

Baby bjorn carrier, got this second hand and used it constantly. My sis bought me a fancy sling thing which costs a fortune and I just couldn't get the hang of it

Intercom listener thingy - excellent - still getting great use of out of that and she's 22 months

Sterliser - get yourself a micro one, easy and quick to use and don't need to worry about dirty bottles.

nappyaddict · 23/03/2007 09:02

oh yes another item i never used. a steriliser. told my mum i didn't want one but she bought it anyway. that went back to the shop asap! £70 she'd paid

nappyaddict · 23/03/2007 09:18

oh and those bath seats ..... why?

skirmish · 23/03/2007 09:20

the bath seats are fab if your lo loves the bath! means you don't have to bend over trying to hold them while they wriggle about!

nappyaddict · 23/03/2007 09:21

i just lay mine down in the bath and put only an inch of water in. then when he could sit up he just sat up in the bath.

skirmish · 23/03/2007 09:23

i love the bath seat, can't rave enough about it tbh. best £12 ever spent on ds! but, as this thread shows, one persons fav product is another persons huge waste of money!

AnnabelCaramel · 23/03/2007 09:24

I love my bath seat too - so much that I bought a second one to keep at grandma's!

nappyaddict · 23/03/2007 09:34

lol, why don't you just sit them in the bath?

AnnabelCaramel · 23/03/2007 09:38

Mine can't sit yet, he wriggles a lot and I just find it really helpful to have two free hands. I had a c-section and it helped after that, and I get a dodgy back now and then and just find it really useful.

nappyaddict · 23/03/2007 09:44

hang on i was talking about the ones with suction pads on the bottom. like this

if your lo can't sit yet i guess you didn't mean one of those?

AnnabelCaramel · 23/03/2007 09:46

Oh no; I agree with you that those are a waste...I'll try find you what I mean...

AnnabelCaramel · 23/03/2007 09:49

this - looks a bit odd but they are fab!

nappyaddict · 23/03/2007 09:57

ah we used to have one of those bath supports. ds just kept trying to wriggle out of it so in the end i just lay him on the floor of the bath which he much preferred kicking about in as he was freer i guess.

Sunyshineymummy · 23/03/2007 10:10

I loved a lot of the things mentioned on here including the bath seat, my OiOi changing bag (still use it), walker, changing mats (I have one in the living room and one in the bedroom), Handysitt (keep it in the car and it's great, allows DS to sit at the table with us when we're out and about), swinging chair (was a lifesaver in the early days).
Never warmed DS's milk so never used a bottle warmer. He's fine with however it comes.
Waste of money were nappy wrapper (never used), scratch mitts, breast pump freezer bags, vests (we used short sleeve body suits, newborn socks (never stayed on his feet so he was always in rompers).

Oh yes, my little one loves the shaped bath seat. We use it on the odd occasion that he doesn't come in with me.

Biggest wastes for me:

Moses basket
The mountains of soft toys we were bought
Baby Mozart Lullaby Classics (it is Mozart muzac, awful)
Top and tail bowl
bottles - I'm breastfeeding
any sock that isn't a Gap sock (the rest fall off)

nappyaddict · 23/03/2007 10:58

why is it none of the other baby shops seem to have figured out gap's got something going on with their socks and cottoned on to it!

Nettee · 23/03/2007 16:28

Muslin squares - DS had one under his head for sleeping for months and I constantly had one over my shoulder. They are for sicky babies so maybe wait and see if yours brings up milk every five minutes and then buy some if they do.

MerryMarigold · 23/03/2007 16:37

nooo...you need a few muslin squares, even to wipe away dribble on non-sicky babies. my ds is 16mo and has to sleep with a 'muzzie' still!

definitely baby toiletries. water is fine (and best) - mine got bad eczema due to johnson & johnson

A TRAVEL SYSTEM - waste of money - buy a decent (light) pushchair and decent carseat

changing bag (never bought one)

however, i did find my swinging chair, bumbo seat and bouncing chair all kept him entertained (at different ages), esp. while i had a bath.
