Hi Cyee,
I finished four weeks before my EDD, including taking the 14 days' paid holiday that I accrue until the end of my OML, as I get six months' SMP (and six months' AML at zero pay should I choose to take it) and I wanted to have as much paid time as possible after the birth rather than before it.
However the last six weeks in work were a nightmare. I was working a 48 hour week (more like 60 hours with the train / walk either side) which my employers kindly reduced to 42 hours in my last month. And I had to really fight to take that. My colleagues just piled work on me and many of them treated me like crap as though I was going on a long holiday!
If I had had the option of leaving earlier, financially, I would have liked to leave at 32 weeks.
With your EDD being after April 1st am I right in thinking you'll get nine months' SMP rather than six months'? If that is the case and your job is stressful and you are working long hours with a long commute, I would recommend leaving at 32-34 weeks.
I am due (with my first) in just under two weeks' time now. I haven't been too bored at home on my own, as I have been able to chat with my neighbours, mil comes to drive me to the shops every now and again and to be honest, I spend much of the time asleep anyway.
If you can afford to go earlier, I would recommend you do.
HTH and congratulations of course!
