When did you tell work?

When did you tell work? I'm currently what they think 13 weeks. I have my 12 week scan on Thursday to determine how French along I am. I'm wondering when to tell work, my belly is definitely becoming rather rounded(is this bloat?) I'm going on holiday Sunday for two weeks. I'm worried if I come back the 'bump' might be even more noticeable!! Do you think I should tell them before I go?

I don't think you HAVE to tell them until 15 weeks before you're due if you don't want to. If you have appointments booked for when you get back from holiday which would require you to take time off of work it might be an idea to tell them before you go but if there is nothing pressing then I don't see why you couldn't wait until you get back after holiday if you'd prefer. Unless you just really really want to tell them in which case go for it! It's entirely up to you and you shouldn't feel obligated to tell them until you're ready.

I told my manager at 6/7 weeks as I was struggling with tiredness, sickness and did have a ectopic scare for which I needed to attend early scans for. My colleagues do not yet know. I'm 10weeks also with a bloat bump that's getting hard to hide, hiding the sickness is harder though.

It's completely up to you when you tell, so long as HR and your direct manager know 15 weeks before your due date.

😊 congratulations! when are you due?

Xx

GinIsIn · 03/05/2017 04:10

I told work at 10 weeks as I had horrific morning sickness.

Expecting2017 · 03/05/2017 06:53

Thanks all. I know I don't have to until 15 weeks before due but I think I'll be showing by then if I'm honest haha. Maybe I'll tell them before holiday it would make appointments easier. I'm due November 9th but find out for sure tomorrow at my 12 week scan. They think I'm 13 weeks now though x

First time I told work at 5 weeks! Worked in criminal justice and needed them to know I wouldn't be running into dangerous situations if any service users started kicking off. I only told my supervisor and the team's nurse, sadly the nurse told everybody else Angry

I am now 4-5 weeks and will probably tell next week, just my supervisor (I'm in a different job) for similar safety reasons, and also as back up in case my work quality drops in a few weeks because of morning sickness!

DryIce · 03/05/2017 07:17

I didn't tell til after 20 weeks, for various reasons. I wasn't showing though, so no one had noticed.

It's up to you, I do think this is one of those things where we notice a lot more than anyone else does

beekeeper17 · 03/05/2017 07:19

I had a similar situation in that I had my 12 week scan and then was off on annual leave for a couple of weeks. I waited to tell work when I got back, mainly because I wanted to tell our friends and family before I told work. But do whatever feels right for you, some people tell work very early on and some wait. I'm on maternity leave and am pregnant again 😳 and am sort of dreading telling work this time as I'm only going to be back at work for 3 months and then off on maternity leave again!!

Sweetpea86 · 03/05/2017 10:07

This time around I told work about 7/8 weeks and I don't know how I kept it quite that long because I was so bad with sickness. I requested that my managers not tell any one on work place which they didn't Smile

But I trusted on work friend who went and told another who is the biggest gossip going and it went on from there Angry if you feel fine I'd keep it quite until you need to. It seemed to make pregnancy drag. 2 weeks to go for me now

MrsY87 · 03/05/2017 11:02

I told work when I was 12 weeks as someone in my team resigned so I thought it would be best to let them know that I would be going on maternity leave sooner rather than later as there were going to be team changes anyway. I hadn't intended on telling them until about 16 weeks.
This caused my boss to go into panic mode as she only joined the business in January and I have been there for 5 years so she started hiring my cover straight away which I was really uncomfortable with as I felt like it was still too early. I'm now 21 weeks and my cover starts next week which I'm still not happy about, I really don't think we need 3 months of handover.
So my advice would be to wait until you feel really ready for everyone to know, you will notice that you are showing more than anyone else will and you can always use some baggier tops/scarfs to hide it a bit longer....I wish I had!

I work in a lab so had to tell them early first pregnancy due to some of the nasty chemicals. This time I knew what to avoid and was working with something less toxic so I waited until after my 12 week scan. It was hard to hide as I got a bump really early and am now massive by 17 weeks.

Hannabee123 · 04/05/2017 16:30

I told work now I'm 6 weeks as I've had a miscarriage scare and needed time off. I'm also a coach driver so I've told them for the sake of not hauling luggage and being given steady local work. It can make your life easier depending on what kind of job your in Smile

SelfObsessionHoney · 04/05/2017 16:32

Told them early as I work with chemicals and gasses that can be dangerous. They kept schtum about it.

fruityb · 04/05/2017 16:32

After my 12 week scan

fuzzywuzzy · 04/05/2017 16:34

After 12 week scan, I'm also high risk pregnancy and needed a lot of additional hospital appts so had to tell work otherwise I'd have had no holiday left!

TipTop333 · 04/05/2017 16:35

Waiting until just after 12 week scan (although that thankfully is outside of my work hours so no time off needed)

fruityb · 04/05/2017 16:39

After my 12 week scan

Hotpinkangel19 · 04/05/2017 17:08

5 weeks, I am a nursery nurse and risk assessments needed to be done x

bluechameleon · 04/05/2017 17:20

Pretty much straight away. I was in a leadership position in a special school and they needed to know I would no longer be actively intervening in behaviour incidents.

Marmalade85 · 04/05/2017 17:29

5 and a half months. They were shocked.

Marmalade85 · 04/05/2017 17:31

Also I think it's rare to have any kind of bump at 13 weeks unless maybe it's your second or third baby.

Expecting2017 · 04/05/2017 19:12

Well I had my scan today marmalade and even the woman commented how I had a bump shape already. Clearly it is bloating mostly but it's there and very hard. Not fat.. I've been on slimming world so losing weight up until now and I also walk daily with my dog and exercise. My sister 'showed' early with all of hers too. Trust me I don't WANT a bump now or to be noticed. I want to hide it as long as I can but people are already commenting on my 'weight gain' even though I'm wearing baggy tops!! And my trousers don't do up. I don't know whether it's to do with me having a short torso and being short in general or what but it's certainly not my imagination as family have even commented when I've been in my usual wear not baggy work wear. Hoping it'll go down and just be bloating ASAP!!

I'm 10 weeks and definitely have a little bump and a little bloat. You just know the difference ... Everyone is different x

jcf1986 · 04/05/2017 21:21

I told some friends at work early on and my manager the Friday before my Monday scan as I wanted to come in and show everyone my pics after the scan so wanted to give my manager warning! We're a very close department though and all very friendly so I couldn't have waited any longer I was dying to tell them the news!

Congrats on your pregnancy. I would say if you're not ready to tell them then don't however you're entitled to all your time off for medical appointments so you could always just tell your manager in confidence so you don't have to take any time off to hide them?

X

Expecting2017 · 04/05/2017 21:53

Thanks all. We're a close department roo it's just the fact I've only been there since Jan I feel awful xx
