My list so far:
Pram/travel system
Cotbed
Changing mat/table
Moses basket
Car seat
Bottle warmer
Bottle sterilizer
Bottlrs
Bouncy chair
Sling

I have no idea how many vests, bibs, clothes etc, or what else?

Sounds terrible but it's our first, likely our only, baby so I'd like to have most things... Why I have a sling and pram on the list... Am I missing anything? Baby gates? Bedding?

If your looking for a sling there are sling library's to try them out - can google in your area
It's good to have something's in stock but don't over buy as you may not actually use items that have been brought see what baby and you need when baby is here. I've got loads of bits I thought I needed/must have but still not used and mine is 17months old now!

honeyharris · 03/05/2017 22:02

Loads of babygros, muslins and bibs - more than you'll think you need. I hardly put my DS in 'proper' clothes for the first few months as I was too scared of trying to put little tips and trousers on him till he could support his head. Babygros with built in scratch mitts.

tops not tips

Thank you everyone. Very good points being made and the advice is really valued x

Prefect prep machine was a god send here. I cleaned it regularly and used it for 16 months here and no mould, I unscrewed it the other day to check.

Also the angelcare baby monitor and sensor pad, it made my days as a neurotic new parent easier as I knew once I was asleep god forbid anything did happen the alarm would go off if she stopped breathing/wasn't in the crib etc. She's now 18 months and in her own room and I still use it every night. One of my friends still does with her 5Yo as when he gets out of bed the alarm goes off Wink

31weeksgone · 04/05/2017 00:54

Also joules baby socks... only ones I've found to stay on. And if anyone wants to get you presents, gift cards are amazing because then you can buy what you like. Clarks ones come in handy when they're bigger and it's £32 for shoes every 6 weeks!

AssassinatedBeauty · 04/05/2017 01:04

Oh, sock-ons are a great invention. They keep any socks on:

Muslins are essential in my opinion

AyUpMiDuck · 04/05/2017 10:07

Wish I had known that buying stuff for the next few
seasons is a waste of money because baby might not grow in line with changes in weather.
Wish I had not succumbed to top-of-the-range models. I chose a top of the range high chair with lots of adjustments and padding and I never used the reclining seat options and I spent a lot of time cleaning food out of the fancy bits while my friends could wipe their £14 Ikea chair down easily and remove chair legs to put it in the back of the car.
I borrowed a Moses basket only used for 2 or 3 months.
Never used a baby bath but got a giant sponge mat to go in the tub.

Really wish I had started son off in those sleeping bag things as they seem to stop them getting cold/hot and waking. I did try one at around 4 months but it was not liked - I think I missed the window there.
Good Luck!

Not read whole thread soz if this is a dupicate tip.

BasinHaircut · 04/05/2017 10:13

Yes an IKEA high chair is a must! Fits in the dishwasher (without the legs obvs) or can be hosed down in the garden. Genius.

AyUpMiDuck · 04/05/2017 10:13

OOh the baby bag! I got a fabbo navy blue messenger style/satchel with compartments and thick comfy shoulder strap from GAP- have seen similar at Kipling.
Remember this will be your everyday bag (and often your partners) while the little one is in nappies. Trust me you do not want to carry a flowery, cartoony, pastel , gingham embroidered monstrosity around for the next 2 years. Choose carefully!

SnackSnackEatAndCrave · 04/05/2017 10:28

Oh yeah the baby bag! We didn't bother because loads of people on MN say changing bags are unnecessary and you just need a rucksack blah blah blah... Only bad advice I've ever had on here!
We were given a small flimsy patterned one by my mum when she found out we hadn't got one, and I was using it within days as the rucksack thing just didn't work for us. DP hated the patterned bag and so has a his own bag for days he's on duty, which is a black messenger style one, the old bugaboo style.
I caved bought a storksack on offer at about 3 months and wouldn't be without it now!

OnNaturesCourse · 04/05/2017 11:17

I like the sound of the baby monitor and pad. I'm a wee anxious annie so it might help x

I see you're putting the changing mat on the dresser. Be careful if you do ever change on the floor not to strain your back. Remember your ligaments loosen up in pregnancy. I hurt my back lifting DD when she got heavier and it's never been the same. Always said I regretted not getting a changing table.
Enjoy -- lovely buying and planning for your baby.

Cleanermaidcook · 04/05/2017 20:29

A baby rocker swing (this kind of thing) www.amazon.co.uk/d/k1f/Bright-Starts-60194-Ingenuity-Cozy-Kingdom-Swing/B00E3RKC36/ref=sr_1_1_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1493925743&sr=8-1&keywords=baby+swing&tag=mumsnetforum-21

Also muslins and more muslins and many many baby wipes, you get through far more than you think you will.

For what it's worth I always made up overnight bottles before bed and bunged them in the fridge overnight. Just used a jug with hot water in to reheat them. Sounds like thats frowned upon here though. Hey ho, 3 kids made it so far, go me lol!

Wait4nothing · 04/05/2017 21:02

Just wanted to recommend Ikea hooded bath towels - much bigger than most hooded towels and cheap. Our other ones are overlooked now (dd is 1)

Andrewofgg · 04/05/2017 21:09

And one for DH:

A chauffeur's peaked cap. Because that's what he will be as LO grows up!

Yogimummy123 · 04/05/2017 23:19

Stuff I didn't use:
Baby hats (seems to be tiny for most baby heads)
Bibs - just used a couple - literally a couple of muslins
Sleepsuits with inbuilt scratch mitts are brilliant, we used matalan. 1 pack Tiny baby (despite 8lb6oz baby), then moved up after a couple of weeks etc.
We were given lots of hand me downs - well worth it for emergencies & round the house. REALLY not worth going overboard buying 10 of everything, esp in smaller sizes cos they don't get v dirty when newborn. Buy bigger bits as you need as you go along.
Put the money away for when they're older, have baby massage lessons, or baby swimming or put into self-care stuff - whatever floats your boat. Happy mum is more important than new clothes in infancy.
Consider bf - saves a fortune & hours of faffing with bottles!
I also barely used the baby bouncer & baby swing thing.
A stretchy wrap for newborn (£40 new, £15 used) for first couple of months, something like a connecta carrier after that for portability & fitting most people (& looking pretty) - buy online or in M&S.
found changing table barely used & ridiculous waste of money - same with most nursery furniture. First child never slept in the cot, luckily the second made better use of it. Cot doesn't last that long either (c. 14m) & they went straight to toddler bed/single bed. Spending 100s on furniture you'll use for a couple of years, esp if planning just the 1 child might be excessive, but of course if it's important to you go ahead! & you can sell furniture on or freecycle it.
I also never needed breastpads. And I tried Breastfeeding & got on with it so never used the bottles, microwave steam cleaner etc. Bought breast pump but that wasn't successful so barely used that either..
Had a few prams. Thought we'd bought one to last the whole childhood & fitted to car seat etc but in reality it was really big & clunky was relegated to the shed within weeks, & we swapped to a lighter one that folded down smaller as soon as we could!

newbian · 05/05/2017 05:24

Things I regret buying early for DD:

  • bouncy chair: she hated the one we got. Sold it the second she outgrew it and will buy a very different type for DC2
  • stroller: the one we got ended up being too big for our particular situation (urban environment). Buy the one everyone else in your area has, that's probably a clue that it suits local families. I got one that had some specific convenient features but in the end had to buy a second one and I can't even sell it because no one in my city wants it either.

Never bought a changing table, just a changing pad with a solid base and wipable surface. It's been placed in beds, dining tables, floors, etc. So glad we didn't get a fixed piece of furniture.

For bottles, I breastfed but she took expressed milk in bottles when I went back to work at 4 months. I bought 1 each of a few types and waited to see which was her favorite before buying more of the same. If you intend to FF from the start you don't really have that option I guess but some do cause more gas or they don't like the nipple, etc. Never bought a bottle warmer, expressed milk was just sat in warm water to get to temperature as her bottle feeds were on a fairly predictable schedule when I was at work.

Wow, responses have been awesome guys. Thank you.

To be honest we will end up buying too much as this is our first and we are lucky enough to be able to buy luxury stuff. Stupid I know but we are excited and we don't know if we will have another...

That said your posts have given me a good idea of how to prioritize the shipping list!

Xx

My first is due 4 th Oct, bought a perfect prep machine to be delivered tomorrow! On offer for 50 quid with del on Amazon prime. Been eyeing one since finding out

FartnissEverbeans · 06/05/2017 17:52

But nice stuff! I splashed out on a few bits and I don't regret it. As you can afford it, I'd recommend you do the same - when you're bleeding and sore and your hair hasn't been washed in three days it's nice if the baby has a lovely grobag or fancy muslins to cheer you up!! It's the little things Grin

I think some people have already suggested the Sleepyhead. I love mine and plan to buy a Grand soon.
Cuddledry towels are not a necessity but it's nice not to get soaked every time you lift the baby out of the bath.
I bought a cheapo changing table from Ikea. We don't use it any more but I loved it in the early days - I could store all our nappy stuff in that area so it became a little 'changing station' where everything was to hand, and it was a lifesaver when I got horrendous inflammation in my pelvic floor a few weeks after the birth.
If I were to do it again I'd buy a sidecar crib, probably a Chicco one as it can be set on an incline which would have been great for refluxy DS (we propped his cot up on books which was fine but not ideal).
