Help me! Newborn clothes

Lauraw1989 · 30/04/2017 18:29

Can anyone advise me what clothes I need for a newborn and how many I need of each?

I've tried looking on Google but every website I look on provides conflicting information.

Buying baby stuff is stressful for a first time Mum who has no idea!!!

I don't want to buy too much because I want to get boy/girl things once the baby is born so I'm just trying to get enough clothing to get me through those first few weeks.

I have my 20 week scan tomorrow and I'm thinking now maybe it's easier to find out.

And do I really need cardigans in September if I get pram suits?

I was lucky and got masses of white vests and babygros up to about 3m from a friend. What I did - which I'd recommend - was order it by age in the drawers, and I was glad because I was convinced I was going to have a whopper (I'm 5'9" and my partner is 6'3" and my bump was huge!) so I barely packed any newborn stuff in my hospital bag. In the event, my son was 7lb12oz and was in newborn stuff for a good few weeks. We were given a surprising amount of newborn and 0-3 stuff too. I always get 3-6m!

Even if things aren't as you expect when baby arrives, Mothercare/Tesco/ToysRUs will be open at some point!

I didn't find pram suit useful, but I had a pram rather than a stroller so I just used blankets (they can't fall off inside pram)

Easier to remove when in shops or when home and baby was asleep so I just but pram inside and took layers off then left him in pram. I'd of woken him if I had a pram suit to remove

Eeeeek2 · 01/05/2017 22:20

Yes you need cardigans - general rule is baby wears one more layer than you. So unless your house is hot and you just wear a t-shirt, baby will need vest, babygrow and cardie

Lauraw1989 · 01/05/2017 22:23

Really confused what to do about the sizes? Do I get both or just newborn?

NapQueen · 01/05/2017 22:25

Get newborn or 0-1 month definetly, but its also worth getting a couple of packs of sleepsuits in size 0-3 and vests so if you still in a post baby fog and suddenly theyve outgrown stuff theres stuff to hand.

Cardigans are necessary for the first couple of weeks as babies need an extra layer on. Pramsuits for out and about. Cardigans over a sleepsuit indoors.

NapQueen · 01/05/2017 22:27

Dont just buy 0-3m, they will swamp the baby.

And you dont need leggings, I just found them easy to shove on. Sleepsuits do for all day if youd prefer.

You may as well get some 0-3 you'll need vests and sleepsuits anyway at some point and they grow very fast. At least then if you run out of smaller size you can put these on while the washing is drying, also saves having too many spares of 0-1 month that won't get much wear.

If you'd really rather have pink or blue just get them by post once baby is here, maybe add some choices into a basket to checkout after birth?

Fruitcorner123 · 01/05/2017 22:56

I didn't find out gender with either of mine and both my parents and the in laws bought new clothes within days of the birth so i only needed a few bits for the first couple of days. I would say 6-8 sleepsuits and vests depending on how often you intend to wash, a hat a cardigan and a coat. It sounds like you've got all you need and as previous posters have said you can order from next to be delivered next day. You're so organised you're making me look bad now as I am also due in September and have sorted nothing out. Blush

GinIsIn · 01/05/2017 23:15

For a sept born baby you won't need a pram suit straight away. Try a tuppence and crumble wrap - we've found them amazing!

Aliveinwanderland · 02/05/2017 04:49

You don't need leggings, I was just thinking about what you were going to wear with the long sleeves bodysuits as unless your house is freezing you won't want them under a sleepsuit.

Definitely get some newborn and up to 1 month, 0-3 will bury him/her at first.

My DS was a warm baby and so inside (in November) he only wore a short sleeve vest and sleepsuit, no cardigan as he overheated easily.

I never used a pram suit, they are a nightmare to wrestle small arms and legs in to, especially when newborns are so scrunched up! I just used a chunky cardigan and blankets when out in the pram. Blankets could then be removed if baby feel asleep and I could wheel him into the house and leave him sleeping.

GinIsIn · 02/05/2017 07:03

Ok I checked! I used in newborn and 0-3:
12x short sleeved vests
12x sleepsuits with built in scratch mitts
2x cardigans for going out
1x tuppence and crumble wrap

About 80000 muslins

You won't need a pram suit - they are a total pain to take off and put on. Blankets or a wrap instead.

If you want to get separate outfits/leggings etc it's entirely up to you but you probably won't use them and they are a lot more faff to change when you're changing them up to 4 times a day. Also trousers = socks. If you do that, you will definitely need to get sock ons as socks and babies just don't mix!

Eeeeek2 · 02/05/2017 09:07

Isn't it funnny how everyone is different, I liked clothes (well t-shirt and leggings) on my ds as soon as I got over the omg he his so small am I going to hurt him changing him stage. So about 2/3 weeks. Because I found them less fiddly that all the poppers on babygrows, my friend still has her 18 month old in babygrows because she finds that easier.

AudreyBradshaw · 02/05/2017 10:45

Tuppence & crumble starsnug. Pram spencer it's are more hassle than they're worth!
About 8/10 short sleeve vests (up to one month)
Up to one month (next) babygrows, 6 or spencer it so.
2 marks and spencer baby bundlers.
Couple of cardigans, knitted.
Blankets.

H&m do footsy leggings which I put on him with a long sleeved vest.

We didn't know what we were having, bought very little clothing wise and was glad. DS was 8lb 15oz and quite long. Newborn stuff didn't really touch the sides. But he wore up the upto one month stuff till he was 8/9 weeks!

Lauraw1989 · 02/05/2017 18:03

I think I have been a bit stupid so far ... I have been adding expensive baby clothes to my basket from Next & M&S.

After reading your replies about how fast a newborn grows I should be getting cheap clothes from supermarkets and maybe treat myself to one nice sleep suit for photos at the hospital once he/she is born.

GinIsIn · 02/05/2017 18:09

Also depending on your baby's body shape some brands will fit better than others so there's no point buying lots of pricey ones in advance in case the shape is wrong. My DS is pretty big, but he's a lot taller than he is heavy so the ones that are long enough are often too big in the body. I know M&S fits well so stick to those mostly but I didn't know that until he was here.

AudreyBradshaw · 02/05/2017 18:25

laura I preferred how the next/m&s sleepsuits wash and wear. I didn't like the supermarket ones as I found they went baggy but shrunk. I'll only buy 6/8 "nice" ones now for each growth stage! But i only tend to only put ds in babygrows for bed so dont need as many as someone whos baby wears babygrows in the day too. Other people have different experiences.

Lauraw1989 · 02/05/2017 19:19

By expensive I was looking at the sleepsuits that are about £8 each! I will probably look for the sets of 5 for like £15

OP posts:
Aliveinwanderland · 02/05/2017 19:27

Definitely don't buy expensive ones, they will only fit for 2/3 weeks. Once he/she is in 0-3 months then get some nicer ones.

M&S sleepsuits are huge, they always bury my DS who has always been Mr average for weight and length. Next ones are nice and wash nice. I find Sainsbury's the best of the supermarket brands. If you wait till end of May bank holiday I bet they will have 25% off again.

Sunshinegirl82 · 02/05/2017 19:32

Next ones are my favourites in terms of sleep suits. I have found the supermarket vests (tesco, asda) to be absolutely fine so not sure i'd spend more than you have to on those. Plus as they go under clothes the neutral ones will be fine going forward, you don't really need gender specific vests.

As this is only to tide you over until you can get gender specific clothes I think I'd keep to the multipacks otherwise you'll end up spending a fortune! Perhaps choose one nice boys outfit and one nice girls outfit for going home? You can always return the one that's the wrong colour! Then you can just get plain white for the rest.

Lauraw1989 · 02/05/2017 19:35

Sunshinegirl82 oooo I like the boy/girl idea.
