I'm 35 weeks today and have been noticing reduced/weaker movements over the last few days. He's been slowing down over the last couple of weeks and I mentioned it at my last consultant appointment, she said to keep an eye and call in if I get worried.

Thing is, I'm not sure if I'm worrying over nothing. My son was delivered 4 weeks early in 2010 due only to reduced movements ( he wasn't in distress) and was found at birth to have two major life changing defects, so I'm not sure if I'm flash backing to that as this one is a boy too.

He is moving just not as much or as strong as before.

Why don't you go and take your children with you? I'm sure it's inconvenient, but in the scheme of things I don't think that's a priority.

CatTheMouse · 01/05/2017 14:53

Because I have 3, one with Down Syndrome who would need physical restraining to stay in a room or would go wandering. They'd never be able to monitor me if I had to sort him. I don't drive and the hospital is an hour away by bus ( not taking into account bank holiday times).

Movements feel weaker still? And this doesn't count as an emergency worth leaving work immediately for, by your DH or mum?

What would happen if the emergency was one of your children already born, would it still be a case of oh leave it a day and a half?

I do understand that you have your child to consider but I am sure that in a hospital full of trained staff, someone could sit with them, distract them, keep them in the room?

FoofFighter · 01/05/2017 15:24

Sorry to keep banging on, and I do feel awful for ranting at a pregnant woman, but seriously, this is so irresponsible.

CatTheMouse · 01/05/2017 15:31

Yes, still slightly weaker but more movements than yesterday. DP also doesn't drive, and is 45 mins in opposite direction from hospital so he wouldn't get here any quicker. And my mum said she'd take me after work, she finished one job at 2 and finishes this one at 6. I'm afraid I can't make her leave. So I guess that makes me irresponsible.

Do you have friends close by who can watch your children? Also, there should be a community midwife who should perhaps do a home visit if you call

You're not irresponsible, you've got too many responsibilities if anything which means you're a bit stuck, but there are options - ring the community midwife now and explain in factual terms the movements and the problems you've previously had. Failing that then call a friend and then get a taxi if possible to the hospital but call them and tell them you're coming in today as soon as you get cover for your children

Good luck Flowers don't beat yourself up - just get to a professional today

flumpybear · 01/05/2017 15:53

Do you have a dad or in laws around by the way?

GoldenWorld · 01/05/2017 15:55

A community midwife in all honest can't do much and will say the same - that you need to go to hospital as soon as you can. You need to have proper monitoring/ a CTG done which a community midwife can't do at home.

CatTheMouse · 01/05/2017 15:59

No dad, in laws, or friends. I literally only have DP or my mum. Mum at least drives so I can bring the kids with me and she can watch them or take them for a drive.

If your newborn had been getting weaker and weaker and moving less and less over several days you wouldn't wait until they stopped moving entirely before seeking help. This could be extremely serious.

SunshineAndSandyBeaches · 01/05/2017 16:11

I am a midwife - honestly ring your maternity unit now. Don't put it off. Midwives see many many people with reduced movements and the vast majority everything is thankfully okay. Midwives and doctors can help an unwell baby (which will be shown by monitoring) they can help once it's too late.

haveacupoftea · 01/05/2017 17:03

I understand your position OP it must be very frustrating. Would your mum maybe take you when she finishes work at 6?

CatTheMouse · 01/05/2017 17:18

Mum's coming over at 6 and will take me. I can't get through to the hospital as the line's engaged. I'm not trying to be irresponsible.

Ah Cat, I didn't realise how stuck you are. Good to hear your mum will be with you soon.

CatTheMouse · 01/05/2017 17:51

Got through, midwife wasn't concerned but agreed for me to pop through.
