When we went for our scan at 16 weeks, the doc said "hmm, may be a girl". He didnt sound that sure, but do they all say it like that or are they normally more positive?? Also, he mentioned the baby wasn't in a great position.

i wouldn't trust that- when they do make mistakes, it's usually saying it's a girl, when it's actually a boy with his tackle 'tucked in'

NomDePlume · 07/03/2007 08:52

they can't be 100% sure just by scan alone.

fryalot · 07/03/2007 08:53

We were told with dd and ds, but they weren't sure. They were right both times, I suspect they say they're not sure so nobody sues them if they do get it wrong.

lemonaid · 07/03/2007 09:02

We had two scans where different ultrasound people said "I'm not supposed to ever say that I'm sure, but that is definitely a boy" (and he was).

franke · 07/03/2007 09:06

If he said baby wasn't in a great position, he just meant for the purposes of seeing what sex it is. I was told girl first time round, but kept an open mind because I knew they couldn't be 100% - she was a girl when she came out! With ds, even I could see on the scan that he was a boy!

Whoooosh · 07/03/2007 09:07

My nuchal suggested a boy,my 20wk scan said a girl so in the end I paid for a sexing scan-was told definitely a girl and she is!

pinkranger · 07/03/2007 09:09

i just had a 16 week scan and she said i think its a boy, then had a better looked when he moved and she said " ah yes there it is cann you see it" - of course i couldnt!! but am not rushing to buy blue just yet!!

Luxmum · 07/03/2007 09:16

I KNEW it was a boy, and got told off by my Dr about holding sexist views, and how girls were just as wonderful (??) He hold me we had a girl, but it turned out he got my scan pictures mixed with another woman with the same surname, and in the end it was a boy, though for months he was in the wrong position to confirm properly with a scan. So yes, they do get it wrong.

Clare123 · 07/03/2007 11:12

well, I am very tempted to have a sexing scan just to find out, the thing is I have another scan in 4 weeks, but that seems a long time to wait. I feel so impatient!

DS1 we didn't find out
DS2 we didn't need to ask - his bits were clear as day on the scan (22 weeks)
DD we asked and had definitely confirmation that she is a she. God I hope she is a she or we've wasted a shedload of money

dejags · 07/03/2007 11:15

that would be

Overrun · 07/03/2007 11:17

If they say its a boy, I have yet to hear of them being wrong. with a girl, they are a bit less sure I think.

Flossam · 07/03/2007 11:17

They told us and showed us with DS. Dp wants to find out this time, although i have warned him they might not be able to. Don't really think we need to bother anyhow - I am completely convinced it is a DS2 as seem to be all my friends!

Flossam · 07/03/2007 11:18

err, I have a friend who was having a DS. She now has a DD.

Nbg · 07/03/2007 11:26

Isnt it the fact that girls bits can look like a little todger and as the pregnancy goes on they become smaller (obviously, lol).

I always laugh when I think about my 20 week scan with ds.
The sonographer was very strict and serious and she even shouted at dh for slightly moving his chair.
Anyway she took her measurements and then turned the screen for us to see. We asked to know the sex and her response was "well i can tell you what I THINK it is but it is by no means 100% accurate" (I think she'd had a bad day)
Well she said "I think its a boy", then showed us all his body parts.
"Oh look theres his leg, Oh and theres his todger. Theres his arm, and theres his Todger, theres his foot and theres his todger"

Those were her exact words too. Me and dh were killing ourselves laughing when we left. It wasnt easy controlling laughter with a bladder full of water either!
So much for it not being accurate lol.

lucykate · 07/03/2007 11:40

with mine yes.

dd, had an amnio

ds, put it this way, if it wasn't a boy i would have been seriously worried what the 'growth' was down there!, you can even see his todger on the scan pic

lucy5 · 07/03/2007 11:45

I know 2 people who have had the opposite of what the doctor predicted.

peachygirl · 07/03/2007 11:50

We had exactly this experience at the hospital. The sonographer said he thought it was a girl but could not be more specific.
We paid for a gender scan at a branch of babybond (great service) and they also confirmed it was a girl but throughout my pregnancy I still thought baby could come out as either!!
She was, and is a girl

LazyLine · 07/03/2007 11:57

They told me that they could see "a really big willy"!!!

donttouchthefruit · 07/03/2007 11:59

I agree that they normally get it wrong with girls the sonographer told me that it's becuase if the baby's not in a great position they might just not be able to see his 'bits'. And I know of two friends who have been told they were having girls and had boys!! My DS1 wasn't in a good position for my 20wk scan and they couldn't even begin to tell me, but I ended up going back for several other scans later on when they could see clearly and even then the lady wouldn't say 'definitely' a girl!! For my next two (boy girl twins) they were 'as sure as can be' about the boy, but more uncertain about the girl. Again being twins I had lots more scans later on so kept asking them to check and at everyone they said boy and girl!!

DetentionGrrrl · 07/03/2007 12:00

at my 20wk scan for DS, we asked if he could see what sex the baby was. he said the baby has his legs crossed, and he couldn't see. DP and i had been joking about that happening before we went in, so i started laughing- when i laughed DS jumped and opened his legs...his response?

'Uh, i'm pretty sure it's a boy!'

Emprexia · 09/03/2007 23:05

I had one done privately at 22 wks and she was pretty sure it was a boy.. we got a picture of him holding his penis..lol

Guess it really IS a genetic thing...

jampot · 09/03/2007 23:07

i have a pic of my ds taking a pee and you can clearly see his genitalia

jampot · 09/03/2007 23:08

i should add that was a scan pic not a regular photograph

LadyOfTheFlowers · 09/03/2007 23:09

with ds1 the bloke was sure he was a boy at 12 weeks and was right and we were told ds2 was a boy at 20 weeks.
