maybe it's just reading the other thread in active convo's, or maybe it's the annoying, stuck up "alpha" mum at toddler group who made a really horrible comment about our choice of names for all 3 DS's (yes even the 2 we know for a fact are DS's as they're already here).

DS1 is Tafara Yehudi
DS2 is Tongai Scott
and DS3 (presuming the sonographer got it right LOL) will be Takunda Myles

Bearing in mind all 3 first names are names from DH's mother tongue with lovely meanings that we both like (and also they're not 'common' English names whcih I don't like ) as they really that wierd????

They are all lovely names, think its nicer when there is a meaning behind the name.

WeaselMum · 05/03/2007 16:12

they are not weird AT ALL - they are lovely, and I expect even lovelier if you know their meanings!

TrinityRhino · 05/03/2007 16:13

they are lovely and the fact they have meanings that your really like behind them is great
ignore anyone else

NineUnlikelyTales · 05/03/2007 16:15

They sound lovely to me. Ignore the silly, rude witch who criticised your choices. How alpha can she be if she lacks basic manners?

StrawberrySnowflakes · 05/03/2007 16:15

Lovely original meaningful names..what are their Lo called chesney and chardonaaaay!!..sod em

KathyMCMLXXII · 05/03/2007 16:15

All gorgeous.
She can't have been much of an 'alpha mum' if she was too ignorant to realise they were names from another language.

beckybrastraps · 05/03/2007 16:17

If your dh was French, do think she would object to Pierre, or Guillaume? Ignore her. She is rude.

Miaou · 05/03/2007 16:17

It would maybe be a little weird if you had no Zim connections and you gave them these names ... but still your choice and woman who commented shouldn't be so rude. But as it happens it is part of their heritage and makes total sense.

fryalot · 05/03/2007 16:18

I think they are all lovely names.

If you change your minds ds3's name will be silly, in context with the other two.

eg: happy birthday from Tafara, Tongai and Bob

It just doesn't go, does it? Your choice is beautiful and complements the other names.t

lulumama · 05/03/2007 16:18

think they are all gorgeous

what do they all mean ? and sweet that they will all begin with T !

mummydoc · 05/03/2007 16:19

are they maori names ?? i think they are fabulous - its good to have strong independent names IMO

KathyMCMLXXII · 05/03/2007 16:19

and will save you money on nametapes.

VeniVidiVickiQV · 05/03/2007 16:21

Fuck em I say. Have what you like.

Although as an aside, its a real tongue-twister when calling them for their tea.

"Tafara, Tongai, Takunda - TEATIME!"

depends what you mean by weird

if you mean weird as in 'that's unusual' then yes they are

but if you mean weird as in there's something wrong with them then thats ridiculous

I hesitate to ask this but is there anything in the pronunciation of Takunda that sounds a bit rude in english .. becuase if it sounds the way I read it just then I'd be really careful re playground bullying

Monkeytrousers · 05/03/2007 16:22

They are lovely. She is obviously just jealous and not so 'alpha' at all

fannyannie · 05/03/2007 16:37

lulu - Tafara means we are grateful and happy
Tongai - ruler/to rule (we picked that one right - he definitely rules the roost with him and DS1 LOL)
Takunda - we have won/conquered

VVV - that's simple

I just shout "BOYS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Dinners ready"

i think they are lovely written down, but how do your pronouce them

Overrun · 05/03/2007 16:52

I like the names, its lovely to have names that reflect cultural background. I personally am not keen on having dcs with names that start with the same letter, but hey, thats just me

thanks FA....good, strong, meaningul names that reflect your families history and roots

don;t let some ignorant woman ruin that for you

my kids have regular english names, and then their hebrew names have a special meaning .

misdee · 05/03/2007 16:57

thats part of the reason we gave dd3 the name Dixie as a middle name and not a first name because the other 2 have 'normal' names (Lauren and Nicole)

fannyannie · 05/03/2007 16:57

Well we ended up with Tafara and Tongai - as Tongai was the only name on DH's list (I didn't make one was still in too much shock that I was pg unplanned to think of names ) that I really liked.......and for DS3 - well it wouldn't have sounded right having a different letter LOL.

Misdee - Tafara is exactly that - Ta-far-a
Tongai - Tong-guy
Takunda - Ta-kun-da

DS1 is usually known as Taf, or Taffy (he prefers Taffy ), DS2 we often call Tony for short (it's the Zimbabwean version of Tony) - not sure what Takunda will be shortened to yet

OP posts:
misdee · 05/03/2007 16:58

ah so i had the tafara and takunda right but in my mind i was saying tong-gee

fannyannie · 05/03/2007 16:59

lol that's ok misdee - when DS2 was born my lovely aunty sent a card saying

congratulation on the birth of Tom Guy......

Mind you she's the same aunt who sent me letters in Zim addressed to FA, xxxx, xxxx, Zimbabwe, South Africa
