Spotting in early pregnancy - just how common is it?

Just got a positive test yesterday but have been spotting (mostly brown coloured but some red) from about 3 or 4 days past ovulation. It has died down - period was due yesterday but still getting occasional spotting mainly red now. It is only when I wipe and doesn't warrant any sanitary protection (ie very light). Test was positive yesterday.

Had something similar with first pregnancy although I think that I was a few weeks further on.

Just how common is it? Whilst I feel fairly positive about it all I will check it out with the doctor. I am also aware that it is early days and a case of 'wait and see'. I was just curious as to how common it actually is.

TIA

Deb, I'm soo sorry. Can't imagine the grief you're going through

I hesitate to write this, I don't know whether its tactless - my friend had 7 miscarriages (all about 8wks) and she is currently 25 wks with a completely normal pregnancy. I don't know where she got the strength to keep trying; the docs never pinpointed what was wrong. I don't know if this gives you hope.

I hope everything works out for you. Big hugs.

Very sorry to hear your news. I agree, you ought to be referred to a specialist now to see if they can pinpoint the cause of these awful losses and, hopefully, make sure it doesn't happen again.

Pamina, I too had a couple of bleeds like this and everything was fine, no further problems. Is there somewhere you can go to make a quiet phone call? I'd ring NHS Direct and ask their advice 0845 4647. I'm sure all will be ok lmbx

Pamina3, sorry to hear this. It isn't worth doing another pregnancy test as hormones stay in the body for while even after having a miscarriage. What you need is an early pregnancy unit - do you know if there is one in your local hospital? I would phone your GP or NHS Direct to find out, otherwise consider that trip to A&E. I would definitely say I was feeling unwell at work (make something up if necessary) and go home at the very least - you won't be getting much work done anyway with this worry. Brown blood is old blood, and plenty of people have spotting during pregnancy, so the chances are that everything is ok. Take care.

Pamina3 - any news?

bunny2 · 23/07/2004 13:19

pamina, I spotted on and off right through to 20 weeks with this pregnancy but it is absolutely fine, the baby is kicking and the bleeding had stopped. It is really frightening to see blood but it doesnt always mean the worst. I also bled when pg with ds and he is 4 years now. Fingers crossed.
