maiden aunts are called beryl

don't do it

Twiglett · 04/03/2007 08:25

Beryl the Peril

In my personal opinion it doesn't sound nice to English ears .. it has a harsh quality to it and makes me think of an old person in a wrap-around pinny with curlers in her hair havin' a fag

sorry

robinpud · 04/03/2007 08:26

Listen to Suzy.

Miaou · 04/03/2007 08:27

No. No no no no nononononono.

I'm not usually so dictatorial over names, but ... no. Sorry!

Budababe · 04/03/2007 08:28

Will pass all of these comments on to my lovely MIL Beryl!!!!!

I don't like it either though!

Very old-fashioned but not an oldie one you would want brought back IFSWIM!!

Blossomhill · 04/03/2007 08:29

I agree with everyone else. I just don't like it. Don't do it!!!!!!!!!!

IdrisTheDragon · 04/03/2007 08:30

It makes me think of someone middle aged.

sunnywong · 04/03/2007 08:30

because I 'm avoiding you
NOT REALLY - how did you high/lowlights work out?

Yeah it's not a resurrector that's for sure. Along the lines of ...... well tbh and at the risk of causing affront to MamanFLo, I can't actually think of a worse one ..... Ena maby?

MamanFlo · 04/03/2007 08:32

I knew it was old-fashion, but to the extent of an old lady with a fag, it's a big shock. Isn't there a trend for old fashion names in the UK ?

thanks for your answers

It's strange about names. My mother remembers when I was born (a very long time ago!) she wanted th call me either Charlotte or Emily, but everyone reacted with utter horror because they were such old fashioned, old ladyish names and I would be hideously teased at school! So how did she call me? Cathleen. How hideous is that! But very trendy and with it at the time. I bet the same goes for Beryl. I don't like it at the moment, but I will put mney on there being squads of them in 5 years time.

ScoobyDooooo · 04/03/2007 08:33

No don't like it at all think it sounds like an old ladies name !

SecondhandRose · 04/03/2007 08:35

Just sound like a name for a baby to me. Don't like it sorry.

MamanFlo · 04/03/2007 08:40

But... in that case, is Merryl (as in Merryl Streep) the same, or worse or better ?

thanks

Oh, Meryl is ok (think it's one l though?)

Katylyte, Kathleen is a very popular name where I live (Highlands). I actually quite like it.

MamanFlo · 04/03/2007 08:49

Beryl is crap but Meryl is OK ? that's weird don't you think ?

OP posts:
Miaou · 04/03/2007 08:54

Yup I know! I thought that as I typed it! But I think it's partly to do with the "harshness" of the name, as someone previously said. Anyhoo, tis only my opinion - I bet loads of people will post now saying "NOOOOOOOO! Meryl just as bad!!!!!!!"

DarrellRivers · 04/03/2007 08:56

i knew an lady called called Beryl and she was old and smoked, so no from me
meryl seems much better

jampot · 04/03/2007 08:59

awful but congratulations

BettySpaghetti · 04/03/2007 08:59

Beryl just makes me think of a slightly dotty old lady.

Not keen on Meryl either I'm afraid -reminds me of this strange, hippy woman I once knew.

NappiesGalore · 04/03/2007 09:00

i like it.

i like Ena too. and fleur and maya and ... all the others i liked (i only have boys so is a moot point for me) have become way too popular now so couldnt go there.

but i like Beryl. who the hell wants to have a name everyone else has/approves of??

geekgrrl · 04/03/2007 09:00

Meryl is good, Beryl is strictly for over 60s...

edam · 04/03/2007 09:05

Yuck. Sorry. Up there with Enid, Eileen and Doris as 'old lady names one shouldn't consider'. Names of the previous generation such as Iris or Ivy have come back - my MIL's friend said they go in phases, people wouldn't use their own grandparents' names but great-grandparents' so long ago they come back into fashion.

MrsJohnCusack · 04/03/2007 09:10

I'll tell you a name that will NEVER come back - Edna

Beryl really is an old lady's name, but actually I quite like it
