My mum is called Beryl Definitely wouldn't use it today though - in my honest opinion, its old-fashioned but without old-fashioned charm (although my mum is lovely!)

Fillyjonk · 04/03/2007 09:19

growing on me, actually

the thing with all these names is-when you see them on a little kid, you don't think "ooh maiden aunt" you think "oh, how sweet"

Fillyjonk · 04/03/2007 09:19

oh pmsl re edna

was wondering about it the other day, but couldn't see it

mind you, there are similar names that are also popular

mousiemousie · 04/03/2007 09:21

Beryl conjours up an old style seaside landlady for me . DD aged 7 says "too weird"

It will be original though, and wierdly I agree that Meryl is without any of these connotations!

belgo · 04/03/2007 09:21

I was wondering when someone would suggest 'Beryl'.

I prefer 'Merel', which is a type of bird in flemish, and a girl's name.

Budababe · 04/03/2007 09:22

My MIL Beryl has a SIL called Meryl! Not keen on either.

Some old-fashioned names are just not destined to come back - agree Edna is one and Ena another.

belgo · 04/03/2007 09:23

Is Beryl a sort of gemstone?

eidsvold · 04/03/2007 09:24

beryl to me = feral beryl - which is what we call the dds when they are tired, cranky and unruly.

glitterfairy · 04/03/2007 09:25

Reminds me of names like doris! dont like it at all.

Caligula · 04/03/2007 09:27

Sorry it still has "Auntie Beryl" connotations for me (remember that Bacardi ad?)

oxocube · 04/03/2007 09:28

Beryl is a green semi-precious stone

zippitippitoes · 04/03/2007 09:28

both meryl and Beryl sounds awful

beryl nasty girl in plaits in was it Dandy otr Beano lol at someone calling a baby that sorry

ditto Edith or any other turn of the century name..people don't think edith piaf how charming

there is being different and being off you rocker eccentric

having said that I would have said the same about stanley and albert and the first at least is one of the fastest moving names

imagine a double whammy of a horrid name that is also popular

Iota · 04/03/2007 09:29

beryl

belgo · 04/03/2007 09:29

I'll answer my own question. It is a type of gem, and emeralds are a type of beryl.

That's why I knew twins called Ruby and Beryl.

belgo · 04/03/2007 09:29

thanks Iota - X posts!

nally · 04/03/2007 09:30

not keen, sorry

NappiesGalore · 04/03/2007 09:34

lots of lovely french names to choose tho, non?

(i still like beryl. i like it more the more people dislike it, actually... contrary? moi?)

DimpledThighs · 04/03/2007 09:34

beryl

pinkchampagne · 04/03/2007 09:38

Don't like it at all, sorry!

Aloveheart · 04/03/2007 09:41

when i was younger there was a berly and george upstaiers we lived in a flat. They were gypsies i think abit of a rough family. so reminds me of her.

I don't like ti sorry.

kittywaitsfornumber6 · 04/03/2007 09:43

I think it's really horrible, reminds me of musty smelling, rotund ladies of a certain age. Sorry.

thirtysomething · 04/03/2007 09:53

I usually try not to be opinionated about names people choose as it's their choice entirely, but felt couldn't remain on the sidelines here! If you live in the UK and intend staying here. don't choose Beryl - it's a very old-lady-with-no-teeth sort of name! I had a similar issue as we used to live in a French-speaking country and when ds was born and I mentioned to French friends I liked the manes Joseph and Robert they said they were real old-fashioned names in France and weren't a good idea, but I hadn't picked up on that!

honeyapple · 04/03/2007 10:00

I had a guinea pig called Beryl- she was lovely.

DetentionGrrrl · 04/03/2007 10:26

i don't like it either- i like old fashioned names, but it's not very pretty is it?

and i think of Beryl the Peril.

NomDePlume · 04/03/2007 10:30

No, Beryl makes me think of cantankerous late fifty-somethings
