I'm thinking of some unusual names for baby and can't decide whether it would be a blessing (being individual) or a curse (forever having to repeat it/spell it)? Any advice/experience y ou gals can give me?

My name is Welsh so isn't all that common outside Wales, but there were 3 of us in my class at Secondary school and we were referred to as name B, nameT and nameL (or Brown, Thomas and Lloyd) which wasn't all that nice.

Nomdeplume, I LOVE Luca for a boy - it helps that it's the name of that gorgeous Dr Kovac from ER!

I am in serious dilemma now aftre reading all your previous posts as So many lush names but my top 3 for the last 5 months are:

Amelia
Esme
Coco

GOD knows what we will choose so any feedback great although love mabel but my best friend has put her mark on that one already and like Elsie & Maisie also but these 3 above seem to have stuck the most. LOVE lola but my darling dog is called Lola so she has ruined it for me!

SO pleased to read your list Bibiboo as i had a lot of negative feedback for all of the above especially Esme. What do you reckon ladies?? Surname is Beadle sadly...

(Loving Iris & Ivy also but DH won't even consider them!)

spacemonkey · 05/07/2004 13:42

well, Amelia is a gorgeous name obviously (as it's mine )

i think Esme is lovely

Lolabelle · 05/07/2004 13:50

Spacemonkey what do you get nicknamed?? Would love to think Millie but not so keen on Amy...

DH loves the name amelia and its not that common is it??

My sister said Esme remineded her of the unpopular fat girl you all knew at school???!!! Some comments like that REALLY baffle me as i envisaged a pretty young french girl!!

spacemonkey · 05/07/2004 13:52

I have never been nicknamed Amy. I have been called variously Meelie (argh), Millie, Minnie, Mel, Mimi and Ami. Most people just call me Amelia though.

Esme is gorgeous - makes me think of a little french girl too!

spacemonkey · 05/07/2004 13:53

actually Amelia is now in the top 30 names I think so it's obviously become more popular recently

Fennel · 05/07/2004 13:55

Esmes are intelligent, beautiful popular and amusing! Check out J.D. Salinger's story "For Esme with love and squalor".

can you tell I have an Esme?

wilbur · 05/07/2004 13:58

Gosh lots of lovely names here - I love unusual names esp. the Welsh ones (love Rhiannon but dh said no and he's probably right it doesn't go with the surname). My name is very ordinary and I always wanted to add something glam to it when I was little (Natasha was a top fave for a while). Also, slightly unusual names have less associations for other people as to what your dd or ds might be like - my dh has a posh first name and he often finds that people have assumed things about him (usually unflattering) because of it. We once went to a B&B and the owner took the piss out of him all weekend in a jokey but slightly aggressive way.

Poppy1978 · 05/07/2004 13:59

Amelia is lovely, although I'm sorry to say that a child named Coco is going to ahve a hard time at school:

Coco the clown
Coco pops
Loco Coco
Coco NUT

Soz!

NomDePlume · 05/07/2004 14:00

I'm afraid there are a couple of name for me which have been ruined by acquaintances, namely April, Esme and Elsie. Esme and April were perpetually filthy and ALWAYS had the obligatory crusty nose and top lip combo, ick ! Elsie was the name of my step-gran, so it'll always be an old-lady name in my mind. Sorreeee !

Jaybee · 05/07/2004 14:08

My dd is Amelia so I am obviously biased but she was almost Elsie so if I had another girl (not likely) that would be my first choice, Esme is pretty too. I love this sort of name, also like Agatha, Matilda, Mabel, Dolly. Fave boys name is Saul - still miffs me that I was talked out of it 10 years ago.

spacemonkey · 05/07/2004 14:14

Saul is a gorgeous name yes (also biased, that's my bf's name )

Lolabelle · 05/07/2004 14:14

Well DH is leaning towards Amelia but god he'd hate to know its becoming popular as he believes he is the first to come up with this name and guards it like the crown jewels!! Esme i really love actually and is slightly less popular but i do know that not everyone will love whatever i choose but i really want it sorted in my head before i give birth and i have a funny feeling it'll be a girl!!

Right so Amelia Beadle or Esme Beadle, i like Evev as a middle name and i do know what you ladies mean about Coco as i do think the Coco teh clown jokes could be an issue!!

Fennel · 05/07/2004 14:19

Esme is actually getting very popular, I'm expecting it to appear soon in the top 100 names lists.

Bibiboo · 05/07/2004 14:20

I think Esme is gorgeous and may well have one of them if I have a girl. I love Mabel, Matilda etc as well - Matilda mainly because of Roald Dahl's Matilda, fave book as a child!
I take on board the Coco comments, but DH had a very ordinary name at school and still got called all kinds of weird nicknames

Lolabelle · 05/07/2004 17:13

Oh decisions, decisions!! At least i have two names i love as opposed to none but change mind daily! Where can i see the top 100 names list you mentioned??

(loving Mabel & Matilda by the way - Mabel in particular is particularly lush!)

Bibiboo · 05/07/2004 17:29

top 100 names can be found here

Sorry, that was just for girls , but on the left of the page there's a link for boys too.

Does anyone know where I can buy (excuse moose-brained description) a pull-string, flap-wing type mobile for nursery, prefereably online? My friend has an adorable green wooden dragon one, which hangs from the ceiling of her daughter's nursery, and when you pull it's string, the wings flap up and down - does anyone know what I mean?
She got hers from a traditional wooden toy store in Cardiff, which has since closed down!

OP posts:
Jaybee · 05/07/2004 18:48

There's a flapping parrot on here or does it have to be a dragon?

Lupe · 05/07/2004 19:43

I think Amelia and Esme are both lovely names - but 'Amelia Beadle' sounds better than 'Esme Beadle' (something a bit too old-fashioned about the combination, maybe? - tell me to b*** off if you think that's rude!).

And I like Lola and Iris too but my DH hated them too! (Lola = Barry Manilow, 'she was a showgirl etc'.

And I like Amy, as well as Mimi, Millie etc.

CountessDracula · 05/07/2004 19:46

Hmm I would be more concerned about the Lola that tasted just like cherry cola myself

Lolabelle · 05/07/2004 19:48

Thanks Lupe - loads of help actually as i was veering towards Amelia Beadle as it seemed to flow more - loving Iris and Lola though but I want to make a decision and stick with it in case this little 'un comes early!!

Jaybee · 05/07/2004 19:50

My one concern about Amelia Beadle would be the Amelia Bedelia books. My Amelia bought some while we were in the US (I don't think they are available here yet) the books main character is a maid called Amelia Bedelia that takes every request literally - name sounds similar thats all.

Lolabelle · 05/07/2004 19:52

No offense about the surname combo either!! Nevere wanted to take DH's surname due to jeremy Beadle jokes but never mind!

Lolabelle · 05/07/2004 19:56

God jaybee that sounds very similar but at least teh character isn't from a porn film or something!! Scarily similar though but the nickname Millie is so cute i think i may just risk it as Esme still gets such bad feedback when i say it to family NOT that their opinions matter that much but i just hate my family hating my choice if that makes sense??!! Actually my sister hates Amelia as she live sin Brixton and says it sounds like one of the numerous nail bars/hairdressers there so I figure you just can't win!!
