Unusual names

I'm thinking of some unusual names for baby and can't decide whether it would be a blessing (being individual) or a curse (forever having to repeat it/spell it)? Any advice/experience y ou gals can give me?

My name is Welsh so isn't all that common outside Wales, but there were 3 of us in my class at Secondary school and we were referred to as name B, nameT and nameL (or Brown, Thomas and Lloyd) which wasn't all that nice.

what about Emilia - maybe not as popular as Amelia and you still get to call her millie.

i'm very stuck on boys names - we can't find any we agree on - so it's bound to be a boy... any suggestions?

Lolabelle · 31/08/2004 19:54

Well Emilia means the nickname will be Em or Emily which although are fine i wanted something a tad different plus Emily is extremely popular as is Emma - Amalia is the italian version i think but it doesn't sound as good i don't think.

Boys names i like names varying from Milo to old school names like Fred, Arthur and Albert although whether DH agrees i don't know!! I try to avoid anything in the past couple of years top ten as i know when i was at school there were loads of Sarahs and Clares and they all hated their dull names although when they were born their mums probably had no idea that they would be so popular - I'm thinking Amelia won't ever have that problem but its hard o predict although i think it'll be the Chloes and Emilys that have this problem despite liking both these names.

Any inspiring unusual girls names??? I'm overdue now so any moment now i am going to have a baby and if its a girl i am going to have to start thinking very soon!!!!

suedonim · 31/08/2004 22:59

What about Amalie? Millie could still be the nickname but it's more unusual.

spacemonkey · 31/08/2004 23:04

Just to be a pedant for a moment, Emilia is the Italian version of Amelia (which is pronounce AhMAYleeah in Italy not ehMEEleeah).

My name is Amelia and no-one has ever called me Millie - I get called Mel, Meals, Ami, Mimi, Minnie but never Millie!

Lolabelle · 02/09/2004 11:34

So you never get called Millie spacemonkey?? God that will put DH off as he loves Millie - i guess he can call her Millie if he wants!! Thanks for the clear up of name variations (by the way way love Amelie but DH isn't as keen) but i do love Amelia and its not that common as i am sure you know yourself as i don't know any amelias and as i'm now 3 days overdue i am sticking with it.

Loving Bo but DH has refused to listen to any other suggestions now!! Last minute panic maybe but just want to be sure!

Surnames Beadle though so Bo Beadle may be a bit odd...

A baby girl in our local paper today is called Mitchell. I can't say I like it.

woodstock · 09/09/2004 18:35

Haven't had time to read the entire thread but have to agree with discerning unusual and ridiculous. I really wanted to name ds Elvis and still think it would have been great but dh objected. Also, people either loved the idea or hated it and I decided I didn't relish extreme reactions to ds's name. Finally we went with Aiden which I loved (and still do) but it has become extremely popular and I'm a bit disappointed about that.
As an example of names possibly bordering on the ridiculous I know of a family with "Arbor" and "Xanon". When you ask what they mean, etc. all you get is a rather blank response.

There was a birtday announcement in our local paper a few weeks back, for a little boy called Max Power.

DD was known as minty when I was pregnant but the only official name, to shorten to minty, we could find was Aramynta. Needless we didn't call her that but we did frighten our relatives by mentioning it.

Mirage · 09/09/2004 20:06

If I'm ever lucky enough to get pregnant again,I'm going to scare people by telling them that we've picked Britney Whitney for a girl & Billy Bob for a boy.

lilibet · 09/09/2004 20:40

my ds2, 7, is the only child in his school with his name. He also plays in a football league on Sundays and I have never known another child on any team have his name.

his name....................?

froot Charlie Watts has a daughter called Seraphina (SIL knew her at school much to dh's delight as he ADORES the Stones)

mazzymcg · 09/09/2004 21:38

There was a girl at dd's nursery called Raven Rainbird and my friend's sister has called her 2nd son Felix (surname Mendelssohn... let's hope he's not tone deaf). Dh insists on calling my bump Persephone so now dd has started doing the same and I'm sooo worried it's going to stick and if it's a girl we'll be stuck with it! I like Grace and Hope for a girl but we are really struggling with boy's names. Quite like Max and Harry but both seem to be really popular now - there just aren't enough good boy's name in my opinion!

mazzymcg · 09/09/2004 21:40

Oh - just remembered, I also knew of someone who called their daughter Scarlett Marmalade. I didn't ever see her but both parents were redheads...
