My dm makes me shamed me into ironing ds's tops now. But babygrows and vests, nah!

He didn't have a special coming home outfit really, I'd planned on putting him in a cute newborn size babygrow with 'daddy loves me' or some such on. In reality, I couldn't have shoehorned the chunky bugger into it (he was 8lb 15oz, newborn only went up to 7lb).

Never really thought about it with my 3 boys they just came home in plain white sleepsuits and blankets Confused finally having a girl and I've washed and ironed all the sleepsuits, vests and the couple pair of clothes (thought I'd buy the rest when I actually have her no point in buying when they might be too big/small) feel kind of guilty now as I never did this with my boys 😔

I was given this one as a gift when pregnant with DS 5 years ago. It was perfect as a coming home outfit, soft and simple but just enough detail to feel a bit more special than a plain sleepsuit. He wore a yellow cardy and hat with it. I still have the outfit and got it out recently, it brought back lovely memories. I think it's a nice idea if you want to do it, it dsnt have to be elaborate. And perhaps we were lucky, but there wasn't so much puking and pooing in those first few days, and he made it home without messing up the outfit....

llangennith · 29/01/2017 11:39

White sleepsuit over a vest underneath and a grobag with sleeves over the lot.
Babies go through so many changes of clothes everyday what with runny poos and sick that sleepsuits are the only option imo.

reallyanotherone · 29/01/2017 11:46

Sleepsuit. With built in scratch mitts.

Don't buy an "outfit", no trousers, dresses, tights, over the head anything. Imagine trying to dress a very distressed cat- go for simple and easy.

Blankets rather than coats too- they'll freeze on the way to the car, then overheat in the car. Blankets you can whip off without having to get the distressed cat out the car seat, remove a coat, then get it back in the car seat....

Iwasjustabouttosaythat · 29/01/2017 11:54

I suggest you get two. I got my little babe all dressed just as we were leaving the hospital, cute as a button, and he immediate pood all over his gorgeous little outfit. He came home in the suit that was closest to the top of the suitcase. Still totally adorable of course :)

Hmm, I never really thought about this much but it does seem to be a 'thing'.

Just looked at my old photos to see what my kids came home in. DS1 appears to have worn a sleepsuit and cardi which was borrowed from the hospital Neonatal unit, as none of the newborn clothes I had fitted him. I remember they were size 'up to 3lbs'. It was November so he was bundled in blankets anyway.

DS2 came home in just a plain white Basics vest, with some sick down the front from the journey (classy). It was late July and boiling, though.

Whatever you choose, they're likely to poo all over it or puke on it before you've got them into the car, so I wouldn't worry too much about it.

Oh god yeah, I agree. Sleepsuits all the way!! I dnt think I dressed DS in an 'outfit' until he was at least 2 months old!! Far too many changes during the day to accommodate outfits. Plus they never look comfy for a squirmy little baby. Cotton soft sleepsuits are all that's necessary for the first few weeks and u can get some really lovely ones. X

My baby was born on Friday and is coming home today! I have a little knitted suit from mayoral to put on him. This is it

Cinderalla that is beautiful!

And congratulations!

likeacrow · 29/01/2017 13:33

So I have to wash all her clothes before she wears them? Shock

Ilovewillow · 29/01/2017 15:39

My daughter's first outfit was a lovely pink baby from mamas and papas, or so I thought - it did up at the back, even the nurse had trouble getting her in it - guess how many times she wore that??! We also had to buy lots of new items as she was really small. My son was born at home which made it easier!

AudreyBradshaw · 29/01/2017 15:50

likeacrow I washed everything twice just because both me and dh have sensitive skin. I was glad I did because as a tiny newborn ds had really delicate skin, even the hospital ID bracelets on his ankles cut him. Plus it was something to do when I was overdue and bored as balls. (Tiny little vests all lined up on the radiator are so heartwarming!)

Don't overdo it though. But I didn't buy much, a few vests in each size and and few babygrows in each size. If it's still in the packets you can always swap it for a different size if they're bigger/smaller than you expect.

electrasy · 29/01/2017 15:56

As a few PPs have alluded to you need to be careful not to dress them in anything too bulky if travelling in a car seat as it prevents effectiveness of harness in a collision. At this time of year, cotton vest, sleepsuit and a thin pramsuit like this is perfect. http://direct.asda.com/george/baby/shop-all-unisex/ear-detail-hooded-pramsuit/GEM396627,default,pd.html then add blankets on top of straps as needed.

To the poster who mentioned a puffa jacket, please don't wear this in car seat. Or give yourself the hassle of taking it off and on for the car. Hoping you meant you are walking home with a pram. And congrats on the new arrival Flowers

electrasy · 29/01/2017 15:59

I just realised you can't tell from the photos in that link, but that 'pram suit' is not padded at all it's really just a hooded, soft sleepsuit that zips over the top of anything. Brilliant for quick trips out in car/sling/pram. Avoid anything with any padding or bulk for in the car seat.

GinIsIn · 29/01/2017 16:12

We have a padded pram suit, www.gap.co.uk/browse/product.do?cid=1065094&vid=1&pid=000627196000 but that's because we only live 15 mins walk from the hospital so DH is bringing the baby home on foot, and I will just be putting him in a vest and sleepsuit under it.

reallyanotherone · 29/01/2017 16:43

but that's because we only live 15 mins walk from the hospital so DH is bringing the baby home on foot, and I will just be putting him in a vest and sleepsuit under it

So did I.

No way I would have walked the 15 mins home, even 3 days later when we were discharged. Please also plan for a car journey/taxi trip in case you can't do it- DH had to go out and beg a car seat off a neighbour ....

FartnissEverbeans · 29/01/2017 17:16

likeacrow I had read online that you should wash everything before the baby wears them but he came early and I hadn't done it yet! He was fine, anyway. Smile

electrasy · 29/01/2017 17:46

reallyanotherone I read that as her DH is walking the baby home and Fenella will get a lift/taxi which seems entirely sensible if they don't normally need a car seat/have a car. Much safer than taking baby in a taxi without a seat. And she might be fine to walk, I would have been both times although there's no way of knowing that in advance.

GinIsIn · 29/01/2017 18:14

On god there's no way I'M walking! Grin DH wants to have a little one on one bonding and take the baby home on foot (it's a lovely walk through the park to get back to our house). I'm totally getting a taxi!

RaeSkywalker · 29/01/2017 18:58

DS was sick over the 2 'nice' baby grows we had for potential going home outfits. So he ended up coming home in 'just' a white baby grow (with, hat and blankets). I'm actually quite glad it worked out that way in the end.

likeacrow · 30/01/2017 08:37

AudreyBradshaw thanks for the advice. I've started washing stuff. We have bought faaar too much in newborn so if she's big we'll have wasted a lot of money! Blush

likeacrow · 30/01/2017 08:39

FartnissEverbeans thanks!

£40 FOR A BABY GROW???

Shock Shock Shock

QueenoftheAndals · 30/01/2017 08:47

I think DS came home in a sleep suit with a pram suit over it. I have a photo of him at a few weeks old, dressed in corduroy trousers and a button down flannel shirt. No, I have no idea wtf I was thinking either!!
