How early can you tell the sex of baby by scan

Just had a scan today. (I'm 16 weeks)

Work had a new scanner machine and were playing with it. The doctor who scanned me said he thinks it is a boy but it may be to early to tell. What he showed me on the screen definitely looked like a boy.

What is the earliest you can find out by scan the sex. I have my 20 week scan in a month and I'll find out then for certain

Most private scanning clinics say from 16 weeks. There are other measurements you can do before then, but as I understand it, they're not particularly accurate.

Congratulations!

I had a scan at 11 weeks at the Harris Birthright Trust in 1994 and the operator 'guessed' it was a boy - which it was. Presumably technology has moved on even further by now, so you dr is probably right but not committing himself in case you sue him if you paint the nursery blue and it turns out to be a girl

maddiemostmerry · 12/02/2007 17:35

We found out at 12 weeks at Harris Birthright Centre. The staff were very sure and right!

jenkel · 12/02/2007 17:37

I was told could be as early as 12 weeks if baby was in a good position

BabyMadwithBump · 12/02/2007 17:38

My MW told me 14 weeks!

eleusis · 12/02/2007 17:42

Sounds like it's a boy.

Troutpout · 12/02/2007 18:03

We told them we didnt want to know when i went for my 20 week scan with my first pg.
We both sat there and watched her go over the various parts of the baby. I clearly saw a willy....but didn't say anything. We came out and dh puffed up and said 'that's my boy'

it was too

Troutpout · 12/02/2007 18:04

Congratulations typhoonsmum...

hoohoo · 12/02/2007 18:54

I'm going for my first scan on wed with my 3rd i'll be 14 weeks, do you think they'd be able to tell me the sex then? If baby cooperates obviously

Glassofwine · 12/02/2007 18:57

I was told at 13 week when I had a scan before CVS with ds - with dd's it was 20 weeks.

WideWebWitch · 12/02/2007 19:03

I was told dd was 80% likely to be boy at 12 weeks (at the fetal medicine centre in Harley St) but she was a girl, confirmed by scan at 20 weeks. It was a lovely surprise because I really wanted a girl (already have a boy) and I'd resigned myself to another boy so it was a lovely surprise at the 20 week scan to be told a girl.

eleusis · 12/02/2007 22:27

They wouldn't tell me at FMC at the nuchal -- both times.

LieselVentouse · 12/02/2007 22:35

I have always said I wanted to know and now they wont tell me. I can find out if I pay £250 for a scan. I think its my right to know what Im carrying.

eleusis · 13/02/2007 06:57

I agree with you Liesel. But, you can get a sex scan for less than £250. Try googling it. It won't be the full anomoly scan, but presumably you don't need that.

fortyplus · 13/02/2007 09:00

I heard that the reason that they won't tell you is that some ethnic groups were aborting so many healthy girls

Wheelybug · 13/02/2007 09:04

A friend of mine had twins and found out before 12 weeks one of them was a boy (they both were).

LieselVentouse · 13/02/2007 11:45

I sound neurotic I know but in my last PG I got the 20 week anomaly scan which told you everything, I also had to have an amnio which told me the sex. I was very glad as I ended up with eclampsia and was out of it for days - never saw my daughter for five days so Im glad I knew beforehand that everything was okay with her and that she was a girl. Im just terified this happens again and Im more concerned for the baby.

eleusis · 13/02/2007 12:17

Why wouldn't they tell you?

LieselVentouse · 13/02/2007 12:20

Because this time I only have the 12 week scan.

eleusis · 13/02/2007 12:26

What do you mean youonly have a 12 weeks scan? Doesn't everyone get an anomoly scan at 20 weeks? Are you in the UK?

LieselVentouse · 13/02/2007 12:31

Yeah - Glasgow

eleusis · 13/02/2007 13:04

And they don't offer a 20 week scan??? HAve you checke NICE guidelines?

LieselVentouse · 13/02/2007 13:10

No, but I will now.

eleusis · 13/02/2007 13:15

I am truly shocked. There are more important reasons for an anomoly scan than finding out the sex (and I am neurotic about knowing the sex -- I wishit would come on the pregnancy test). They check bone growth, brain development, amount of fluid, check the placenta and cord and see that blood is flowing properly... and much more I'm sure. Why is this not offered?

How pregnant are you?

Chooster · 13/02/2007 13:52

You dont get a 20wk anomoly scan everywhere - I'm in Edinburgh and you definately dont get offered one as standard unless there is a reason to suspect a problem... A shame but true
