How early can you tell the sex of baby by scan

Just had a scan today. (I'm 16 weeks)

Work had a new scanner machine and were playing with it. The doctor who scanned me said he thinks it is a boy but it may be to early to tell. What he showed me on the screen definitely looked like a boy.

What is the earliest you can find out by scan the sex. I have my 20 week scan in a month and I'll find out then for certain

You dont get a 20wk anomoly scan everywhere - I'm in Edinburgh and you definately dont get offered one as standard unless there is a reason to suspect a problem... A shame but true

I had mine at 14wks and you could definately tell ds was a boy, no mistaking it at all

So I take it from all those replies that the baby is more than likely a boy. I had a scan at 11 weeks and she said she thought it was a boy but wasn't prepared to say definitely as it was so early and the doctor yesterday said it was a boy, it certainly looked like one to me.
DP has two girls to another relationship and we have a girl together so a boy would be really nice. I don't want to build my hopes up and then find it is a girl (not that I'd be very upset. Girls clothes are much nicer than boys )

During my first pregnancy, I asked at my 20 week scan what stage they could tell the baby's sex, and received the extremely irritated and snappish answer 'When it's born!'. Presumably the rules have changed now though, I'm now 11 eleven weeks pg with second child, and have been told that the hospital now offers the option of a further scan at 23 weeks that you pay for, if you want to know the sex. Whether or not I go ahead with that depends on the price though, as all the paperwork and booklets I've been given do not mention how much it costs.

How rude.

Did you complain. I can't believe the cheek of it.

I found out at the 12wk scan.

My doctor said they can sometimes tell at the 12 week, but it's rarely very clear.
I'm shocked that some people don't get a 20 week scan. I was told that that was the MOST important scan - I'd throw my weight around if I were you guys. Ask for one and if they refuse tell them that you want the refusal in writting as it may be relevant to any legal claims you might be required to bring against the hospital.

No, I didn't complain, unfortunately, I was too surprised at how rude the woman was. I wish I had though. I've just had my first scan for this pregnancy and was very glad it was a different person doing it.
