Hi ladies,

What sized clothes did you buy for newborn and how long did they fit them after birth?

Debating if i need bother with newborn (upto 7.5lb)? Or if upto 1 month (10lb) and 0/3 (14lb) will be enough?

I was measuring small so had a growth scan and baby was estimated 4lb at 32 weeks

Look forward to your comments

My advice would be to buy some newborn stuff and that's it. With my first, I didn't, and bought 0-3 months and two things happened;

  1. 0-3 was too big (7lbs 15) so dh had to do a dash from the hospital to buy some newborn baby grows
  2. All of the gifts we had were 0-3, so we had far too much.

If in doubt, don't buy anything until about 2 weeks before and keep the receipts so what you don't use can go back (but stick to supermarket clothes and you'll definitely be going there in the early days and you might not be arsed to go back to the other shops with a newborn in tow!)

Good luck xx

Clearly my advice is so good, I felt the need to say it three times!! (App kept telling me it had failed to post. Clearly app was lying!)

Thank you for all your comments. The midwife estimates that she will be around 7-8 pounds based on growth scan so I've decided on a few newborn bits then up to 1 month and 0-3 month. Anything extra that I need i will send oh out to get

Thanks again

Xx

I brought my little girl newborn clothes but not many as they grow out of them quickly

I bought a pack of vest, babygro, hat, mitts, cardigan in newborn along with a pack each of vests and babygros. I also got given a few newborn bits and just washed a lot. The rest I got bigger sizes. The hat, mitts and cardigan fit for ages after the rest didn't.

Also weight isn't the best indicator as shape comes into it. My 5lb 12 baby was too long for the legs in most newborn clothes. Also the sizes of clothes differs dramatically between shops even when they're supposedly the same size.

I got 0-3 months for my first son who was 7lb 13. The clothes swamped him. Bought newborn for my second son ( and unfortunately only took them to the hospital) and his 'petit' 10lb frame would not fit into them.

Mine was in his 0-3 months only for a month...

My DS was born a week early and weighed 8lb, and he was in the newborn clothes for several weeks despite most labels saying that it's for babies up to 8lb. Hmm

I bought newborn and was gifted plenty of 0-3 months with DC1. We were living quite far from family and friends at the time but I was still overwhelmed with posted clothes gifts. So my top tip is don't get too many. I bought very little clothes in his first year.

I used newborn with my 3 dcs who were all 8 to 9 pounds for the first few weeks (they dropped a little weight which is normal and were back to birth weight by 2 weeks) but my 10 pound 5 and long baby (who didn't drop a gram!) squeezed into newborn get home - and was straight into 0-3 months.

malvinandhobbes save them for dolls clothes. Perfect size for Baby Annabelles and the likes and much cheaper than dolls clothes.

We didn't want to know the sex, so we got the bare minimum we'd need in white- size newborn- up to 10lb. However when little one was born, we was a boy, and only weighed 6lb 7oz, so the clothes were huge on him. So we went and got blue ones in size tiny baby- up to 7.5lb. Even they were a big big at first. He was born early September and the tiny baby size lasted until mid to late October, so he got good wear out of them.

Neither of my boys could fit in newborn baby clothes at all. They were "only" 8lb2oz and 9lbs4oz, but DS1 was just shy of the 99.6 centile line on the baby length/height chart at birth and DS2 was exactly on the 95th, so both very lanky. Grin

0-3m stuff was a bit big on them to start with, but I don't recall ever seeing 0-1m as an option back then...?

Kel1234 · 05/10/2016 20:37

Not sure if the 'only' was aimed at me? I was only sharing my experience and explaining that the newborn clothes (up to 10lb) were far too big on my son, because his birth weight was 6lb 7oz, so that's why we got him tiny baby (up to 7lb 5oz).

lazydog · 05/10/2016 21:29

Ermm, no. Nothing to do with your post Kel1234 at all. Not sure what you could possibly have taken personally? Confused I was purely replying to the OP.

I said "only" in quotes because I know that their weights weren't exactly in the low range, but they would still have fitted into newborn size had they been in proportion, instead of being really long babies. That's all.
