Hi ladies,

What sized clothes did you buy for newborn and how long did they fit them after birth?

Debating if i need bother with newborn (upto 7.5lb)? Or if upto 1 month (10lb) and 0/3 (14lb) will be enough?

I was measuring small so had a growth scan and baby was estimated 4lb at 32 weeks

Look forward to your comments

I only bought 0-3 as family history, measurements and scans all suggested baby would be big. He was 9lb 6oz and the 0-3 from some places fit him well (John Lewis and M&S I think) whereas others are really a bit big (Mothercare, Asda, Boots) but still wearable.
I also would get a reasonable number of vests and minimal sleepsuits - we've been given at least half a dozen multipacks of sleepsuits as gifts but no vests Smile

Ive done for upto1 month and 0-3, if she's really tiny hubby will nup out and get some newborn ones but she can wear one that's a bit big until then

MumOfTwoMasterOfNone · 03/10/2016 11:29

Mine never really fit in newborn (9lb and 8lb). They were out of 0-1 month within a week and 0-3 months within a month of being born. My 8 month old is in 9-12 and they are on the small side but I make very big babies and seem to have super growth breast milk Shock
I wouldn't spend a lot. I regret it and I've had so much unworn stuff I've given away it made me feel sick. Such a waste of money!
Both babies were predicted to be a good size and they were though so if you're measuring quite small, newborn sizes are probs a good idea? Don't go mad though, is wait and see.

I've a 11 week old, 8lbs at birth and up until 4/5 weeks she wore up to one month. She's had 0-3 months until last week. She's on the tall side though - she's on the 90th percentile. Hope it helps.

I also bought mainly unisex (with one or two pink things) so far so I can use for another baby if we get around to it Smile

My son was 8lb12oz and fit into first size for 2 or 3 weeks and 9 weeks later can still fit into upto 1 month size. His 0-3 are all big on him.

My dd was 6lb and my ds was 6lb4, both needed tiny baby clothes newborn size were huge! My dd wore the gorgeous newborn outfit I brought her to go home in aged 4months! Hmm

passingthrough1 · 03/10/2016 14:50

On the other side, mine was about 6'12 and we moved out of newborn into 0-3 really quickly (a few weeks)! He wasn't big but the leg and foot lengths on the newborn stuff were really short and it looked uncomfortable on him.

BettyOBarley · 03/10/2016 15:03

The problem is all the shops seem to vary - e.g. newborn at Next only goes upto 7lb 11 I think, but at other places it's 9 or 10lb.

I bought mainly 0-3 for DS as I had a feeling he would be a big baby. He was 9lb 1.5 and is long but actually 0-3 is still massive on him.

Gazelda · 03/10/2016 15:07

I didn't know newborn size existed when my DD was born! I'd assumed 0-3 months was the starter kit. Poor little poppet came home from hospital in a snowsuit that just showed the top of her head Grin. I'd get a set of newborn vests and baby grows to be going in with. Plus one or 2 outfits for showing off visits.

RattieOfCatan · 03/10/2016 15:24

I have a few newborn bits but not much, enough for two/three days of wear if they don't fit into 0-3. I'm fully stocked on 0-3 and figured that should we need NB sized items I can send DH or my Mum to mothercare to grab some more! But mothercare is a five minute walk from our house, well stocked with their basics range and open 7 days a week, if I didn't have them nearby I'd probably have bought more!

Frankie72 · 03/10/2016 21:13

I have a 6 month old still in some 0-3...
Marks and spencer are huge!

Take a selection and maybe some back up baby grows in tiny baby?

On another note.. Make sure your partner knows where things are kept. Mine didn't and when we ended up staying in hospital for longer it cause some stress!

gunting · 04/10/2016 10:45

We bought newborn stuff for my son who was born in November. He spent the first few hours of his life naked as he turned up 10.6lbs and nothing fit him. Grin

He went straight into 0-3m so its best to have a few different sizes.

Callipygian · 04/10/2016 11:15

My daughter didnt fit into newborn. 8lbs 11oz and very long (99th %ile). My son needed newborn size, everything bigger was massive on him!

Buy a few things in newborn and take them to hospital. If you need more its not that difficult to ge tmore. Bear in mind different brands come out differently.

Shemozzle · 04/10/2016 12:05

It's usually only the 10lb plusers that don't get much or any wear out of newborn. But if you don't mind the baby being in baggy sleepsuits you have to roll up its only for a few weeks before they look ok. Newborn clothes are so cheap though, particularly second hand when they are still usually
pristine that it's definitely worth getting some. A bundle of plain newborn things on eBay is probably the cheapest option if you are very reluctant to spend much.

My first was 6lb 7 and newborn was too big. Had to get tiny/early baby for first couple of weeks and she was a bit of a slow gainer and was in newborn for 3 months.

My second was 7lb so hardly much bigger but she was much shorter and very chubby in comparison. Her sisters old tiny baby didn't fit at all, and newborn lasted only 3-4 weeks. But she was very refluxy and had outfit changes several times a day so I was very glad for having stocked up on tonnes of newborn.

Shemozzle · 04/10/2016 12:06

I'd recommend the H&M 1-2 month size. Slightly bigger than newborn but a nice closer fit so not too baggy if too big. It's the perfect gap between newborn and 0-3.

Artandco · 04/10/2016 12:08

I bought newborn babygrows and vest. But just 0-3 cardigans. Figured if the cardigans huge they could just be covered and wrapped in blanket over babygrows the first few weeks or just roll the sleeves up a bit if needed

Both wore newborn for around 6 weeks

SuddenBeetE · 04/10/2016 12:21

DC4 (I've no idea about the other lot it was a while back!) was 8lb, he fit in newborn for about 2 days until his legs stretched out, was too long for up to 1month by 2 weeks, 0-3 by 6 weeks, 3-6 by 9 weeks. He is incredibly long!

I'd buy a pack of sleepsuits+vests in up to 1 month and the same in 0-3, then wait and see what size and shape baby is.

tissuesosoft · 04/10/2016 12:34

We didn't buy any newborn sized clothes except a multi pack of sleepsuits and vests (7 of each). Everything else was 0-3 months. DD was 7lb 8 when born and we knew from scans she had long legs.

MyBreadIsEggy · 04/10/2016 12:42

I bought all newborn and first size when my Dd was born, but actually needed tiny baby and preemie sizes for the first 4-5 weeks - Dd was 5lb 15oz born at 38 weeks.
I've bought some tiny baby for DS (due Nov), but think I need more as he was measuring small at my growth scan

5moreminutes · 04/10/2016 12:46

Find out what size you were at birth - growth scans can be a long way out though also shouldn't be discounted of course. If you were full term and your baby is, it's fairly likely they'll be a similar size unless you've had any pregnancy issues.

None of my babies fitted into newborn clothes - all 0-3 months. I didn't buy any newborn size but we were given newborn clothes before DC1 was born which were just too small to use.

malvinandhobbes · 04/10/2016 12:46

I had a 9lber and she wore 0-1 month for about 2 weeks. Mothercare does lovely babygros in this size. She wore 0-3 months for a month and is now 9 weeks old and filling out her 3-6 month clothes.

I don't even know what to do with these lovely clothes that are only worn once or twice. No one we know is having babies, and it seems such a fuss to sell them for just a couple pounds on the local Facebook group.

lynniep · 04/10/2016 12:47

DS1 was 8lb2 and fitted newborn. I brought his old stuff with me in the bag for DS2. HAH HAH HAH not a chance. He was 10lb3. Had to send DH to the shops to get him 0-3.

eternalopt · 04/10/2016 12:50

My advice would be to buy some newborn stuff and that's it. With my first, I didn't, and bought 0-3 months and two things happened;

  1. 0-3 was too big (7lbs 15) so dh had to do a dash from the hospital to buy some newborn baby grows
  2. All of the gifts we had were 0-3, so we had far too much.

If in doubt, don't buy anything until about 2 weeks before and keep the receipts so what you don't use can go back (but stick to supermarket clothes and you'll definitely be going there in the early days and you might not be arsed to go back to the other shops with a newborn in tow!)

Good luck xx
