I'm coming near to the end of my pregnancy and got most things. Just wondering what is the most gentle baby wash for bath time? All I want is something as simple and non-irritating as possible, but would be interested in organic stuff too if not expensive? Thank you.

As others have said just water. Definitely not johnsons it's really irritating on their skin.

secretgirl · 22/09/2016 21:37

Johnsons isn't irritating on every baby's skin or it would t exist. My friends and SIL used it on their babies just fine. Each to their own.

GrassIsJewelled · 22/09/2016 22:14

My little one is a toddler now and mostly still use plain water. He bathes every night but just quick 10 min. Up to about 9 months it was every few days.

Just water here too. I was going to start using Johnsons because DS had a full head of hair at birth and I thought I would need to wash it but the HV said don't bother - it really irritates and dries their skin and there is just no need for it

Haggard1 · 22/09/2016 22:35

Another warning about J&J here. Both my youngest and I react to it - I try to stay organic as even some of the washes billed as 'sensitive' seem to make DD's skin react.

Applesauce29 · 22/09/2016 22:38

Just water for the first few months. Used oilatum with toddler (who had sensitive skin) but mainly because I was getting dermatitis from washing my own hands and the bottles etc so often. Also used dentonix cradle cap shampoo when needed. And bubbles from about 1 year, when he really started to enjoy them.

I like Child's Farm and Weleda, but the first one we used which I LOVED was some Neal's Yard thing I got in a mum & baby gift set

seven201 · 22/09/2016 22:45

I have a three month old. We used just water for the first couple of months. We do bathe her every night not sure how long this will last as she quite likes it and it's part of her routine. We wash her hair every other day with child's farm shampoo/body wash.

Artandco · 22/09/2016 22:47

Oh and I wouldn't use j and j, have you seen what's in it?

NannyR · 22/09/2016 22:55

Plain water is fine until they start weaning and smearing bolognese sauce everywhere! Weleda is a nice brand or just a bar of mild soap.

As a nanny I've used lots of different products and the Johnsons baby bath is the one that I always have to use hand cream after bathing the kids - I find it very drying and personally wouldn't use it on my own children.

moaninggiraffe · 22/09/2016 23:10

Johnson's really irritated my dd's skin and we only had the newborn stuff - prescribed creams and washes by the gp but it didn't get any better. We moved onto weleda wash, weleda baby oil and aveeno cream - sorted her skin in a few days! We are now trying child's farm and it smells lovely and hasn't irritated her skin at all.

Craftycakey15 · 22/09/2016 23:11

Blimey, thanks for all the replies this evening! I had no idea you could just use water for so long. I thought it was jet when they were newborn they didn't need any type of soap.

They don't get dirty enough for soap very much until they start eating solid food and moving around a bit. When all they have is milk the important thing is getting the cheesy dribble out of all the skin folds Smile

It's worth having something available for the odd poonami clean up though.

MumToBe2015R · 23/09/2016 12:27

Didn't use anything the first 6m then started with Burt Bees products - shampoo, wash & moisturiser. As I suffer from both psoriasis & eczema was worried his skin would be very sensitive too. So far this has been great. Shampoo is used approx 3 times a week. Wish you well OP x

LillianFullStop · 23/09/2016 17:55

I use Aveeno for my own dry/sensitive skin so picked up Aveeno baby for bath. Weleda is also nice.

RedCrab · 23/09/2016 19:17

Johnsons is used as a solution for conjunctivitis - it's not something I would use in my children's baths.

Just like previous posters - water, then later on an oil like coconut oil or something that was SLS free.

greenlizard · 23/09/2016 19:22

Water mainly for the first few months (with a bit of burts bees every now and then). Now hen is a toddler it's still hurts bees or simple baby wash. He has a bath/hair wash everyday - he is so grubby I cannot fathom how other people's babies are not! I also used oilatum/aveeno oatmilk bath when he got periodic dry skin when younger.

babynelly2010 · 24/09/2016 13:13

My ds reacted to j&j too. Dd was fine but I wod not recoment these products.

Uiscebeatha85 · 24/09/2016 16:51

'I've Bought the Johnsons & Johnsons stuff. The wash, shampoo, powder. Adore the smell.'

Studies show a strong link between talcum powder and ovarian cancer. I'd be throwing it in the bin if I were you.

KayTee87 · 24/09/2016 18:35

Oilatum shampoo, breast milk in water occasionally or coconut oil - he's 8 weeks old.

Luckystar1 · 24/09/2016 18:40

DD is 7 weeks... Still hasn't been washed. Blush I'm so lazy!!!

DS we used plain water for ages, then Aveeno baby, now Child's Farm.

Custard7 · 25/09/2016 08:49

We used plain water for a while then switched to child's farm or the organic stuff in waitrose (love this whole range inc the bottom butter!).
At about 6m we started using johnsons spray conditioner after a bath as her hair is epic (lots of it and curly!) and it's the best taming spray by far! We did first bath at about a week old as she did her first explodapoo and we didn't know where to start!

onedogatoddlerandababy · 25/09/2016 08:51

Water.
DD2 (2.9yrs) kicks up such a shit storm about shampoo that her hair is still only washed with plain water Hmm

Nicky333 · 25/09/2016 11:08

Just to add to the Jonhson & Johnson stuff, they've recently made MASSIVE payouts to settle 'ovarian cancer caused by J&J products' cases. I love the smell but there's no way on earth I'd use anything of that brand on my little girl. We've been bought things from the range and I've thrown them out.
