Stylish changing bag?

Why do they design changing bags for kids, not women? Just because I'm going to have a baby, it does not mean I want to sport something with a duck or elephant on it!
I know it's an unnecessary extravagance, but if I'm going to be carting around a changing bag for the next 18 months I'd like something fab! Any ideas? Some of us were drooling over the Cath Kidston one on the antenatal pages, but I'm really more funky than flowery...any suggestions appreciated.

oioi bags

TravellingontheClaphamOmnibus · 03/02/2007 19:19

Just buy a normal bag. Changing bags are a massive rip off and completely unecessary IMO. I have a rather nice brown leather bag which is big enough for all my bits and pieces with not a duck or elephant in sight.

sarahhal · 03/02/2007 19:25

Agree with fairydust - Oi Oi do some def funky ones. Mind you, also agree with TOTCO ( my God, is that the longest Mumsnet name!!) that any big bag will do. DS is 18 months and I don't think I've used a changing bag for the last 8!
Mind you , I am the owner of a very very nice Cath Kidston bag bought as a leaving gift from my last job....

Fillyjonk · 03/02/2007 19:28

but why would you need one?

i have never had a special bag for baby stuff, its just not necessary.

i mean you need a few nappies, a few bags, wipes if you use them, a tiny pot of sudocrem if you're efficient. Thats it, and it will go into a smallish bag IME. Most places have changing mats nowadays anyway.

Orchide · 04/02/2007 00:01

bump,

i'm a bit of a bag fiend at the best of times and dont really need much of an opportunity to splash out on a new one. However a new baby is, in my opinion, a great reason to really NEED a new bag - that is what i will be telling DH at least!!!

I have been admirinG Oioi messenger bags - possibly oriental posy

funkymoose.co.uk/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=45_169&products_id=310

and also skiphop dash bags

TK max had some funky change bags and others that would serve the purpose well.

storksack are nice storksack THey also sell them in John Lewis

incy · 04/02/2007 09:50

second and third down are changing bags with bottle holder/changing mat etc.

weepootleflump · 04/02/2007 09:53

I'd recommend an Orla Kiely bag - they're made of oilcloth so easy to wipe clean and very roomy. Most importantly, they look great. Ebay is the best place to look for them as you'll find styles from every season for at least the last 5 years.

amidaiwish · 04/02/2007 09:53

these are the best changing bags i have ever ever had (and i have had a few).
i've had the carry on bag (love it) and now i have 2 DDs i have the shoulder bag which has tons and tons of room. allerhand

foxtrot · 04/02/2007 10:00

Iid suggest a longchamp pliages bags , and a changing mat/pouch freebie off the cover of a baby magazine, and a little cool bag.

Emzickle · 04/02/2007 21:41

Ive got a Caboodle bag, it's one of thier limited edition ones, I love it. Plus it has handy leather bits which attach to stroller / pram, and loads of useful compartments to bung nappies, bottles, wipes, toys, kitchen sink...

wheelybug · 04/02/2007 21:44

Can recommend skiphop bags - i have a duo although don't use it anymore (dd just turned 2 so I can get away with smaller bag and bung a nappy in) and they are fab. Great customer services too - they'll send you spare parts for free...

MrsBadger · 04/02/2007 21:49

You don't need a changing bag.

Get one of these and, if you like, treat yourself to a new handbag to sling it in - otherwise just chuck it in one of your current (surely funky ) bags...

MrsBadger · 04/02/2007 21:51

ooh, same one here cheaper

foxtrot · 04/02/2007 21:52

Mrs B, that's the kind of thing i had, as a magazine freebie. I always wonder what people find to lug around in these huge changing bags (although a mum came to my house once for a coffee and she had a regular sized tin of formula with her ).

MrsBadger · 04/02/2007 21:54

you must read better magazines than me!

I think the bigger your bag the more crap you fill it with...

foxtrot · 04/02/2007 21:58

It was mother&baby or some such, i only bought it for the free gift.
Now, those little bags that you put your handbag contents in, so you can easily swap between your paddington and your kelly (for example ) - do they do a similar changing bag thing, i wonder? Can't remember the brand name.

MrsBadger · 04/02/2007 22:01

you're thinking of the Bag Swap Bag ...

foxtrot · 04/02/2007 22:05

Thanks they do this too, that would work for baby stuff too

Astrophe · 04/02/2007 22:06

I have an OiOi bag my dh bought me for Chrissy and I love love LOVE it so much. I got the brown one with the hot pink lining

I find changing bags useful for the compartments and also the size - I couldn't find a big enough handbag that didn't look like mary poppins' bag or a teenybopper try-hard bag. Also, I loce the oioi one as the strap is long enough to sling diagonally across me, so I can carry baby and toddler if need be.

Must say, even with this large-ish bag though, I never have enough room. Nappy, wipes, purse and change of pants for dd are the only permanent fixtures in the bag, but by the time I add 2 snacks, 2 beakers, 2 hats, mittens, washable nappy and bag blah blah blah it is absolutely chockers!

Loulee · 05/02/2007 17:24

You must use this as the perfect excuse to buy yourself a lovely new bag - forget the "changing" bit - so long as it can fit your bits and pieces in, you'll be fine - and a lot more stylish!

MerryMarigold · 05/02/2007 17:30

i thought: why should they charge 4 x as much for a bag just because it is a changing bag. i just bought a decent sized funky bag - it was way cheaper, something i liked that i could use when changing bags no longer needed and i have had MANY compliments on it. don't buy into the 'special bag' thing - it just ISN'T necessary.

bumperlicious · 05/02/2007 17:41

Thanks for all the advice guys. I'm not too fussed about it being a changing bag, I'll happily just have a funky normal bag, but not having done this before I don't really know what I'll need to be carting around, and just thought that at least a changing bag is purpose built so to speak. So any further suggestions of cool bags, changing or otherwise, would be very welcome!

They seem to have some fab one's on this site , I like the "mile high"flight bag - I'm guessing a shoulder strap is a must?

Glad I'm not the only one not drooling over Cath Kidston (you could come and give me some moral support on that one btw ).

I would second everyone else that said you don't actually need a changing bag. I have a towelling changing mat with plastic backing that folds up very small. With a couple of nappies and small pack of wipes it really doesn't take up much space even in quite a normal sized handbag. If I going out for the day and need toys, food etc too then either I take a large handbag or a daypack.
