Stylish changing bag?

Why do they design changing bags for kids, not women? Just because I'm going to have a baby, it does not mean I want to sport something with a duck or elephant on it!
I know it's an unnecessary extravagance, but if I'm going to be carting around a changing bag for the next 18 months I'd like something fab! Any ideas? Some of us were drooling over the Cath Kidston one on the antenatal pages, but I'm really more funky than flowery...any suggestions appreciated.

Agree - I've been through a whole range of changing bags but got given a lovely Furla bag for Christmas - it fits a nappy and change mat and really don't need too much more than that (plus all my stuff of course).

re shoulder straps, imagine having to hold the baby and fold the pushchair to get on a bus - something that keeps your hands free is a definite plus!
One / two long handles can work as well though.
Also consider how you'll deal with it when pushing the pushchair - a long strap means you can hang it over the handles or wear it across your body.

oh, and cool-bag wise, if you do end up using formula (which you may not) just get an insulating sleeve for a single bottle.

Or (better) take boiled water in sterilised bottles, which you don't need to keep cold, and add the powder as and when you need to.

amidaiwish · 05/02/2007 20:13

oh i should have said that my super duper allerhand shoulder bag comes with:
a changing mat
a separate insulated bottle holder (detachable)
a little purse thing ideal for a dummy
about 2 or 3 separate zip wallet type things which velcro on (great for all those little bits...)
the inside has 4 elasticated pockets for bottles, cups etc...
and it has 3 separate zipped compartments for wet/dirty stuff.
i really love it!!!

amidaiwish · 05/02/2007 20:14

and as if i could forget it also has those D-ring clips which let you attach it to the buggy. I also find it great to attach to the supermarket trolley so no-one can pinch it whilst i am distracted.
right, i will stop raving about it now and go cook dinner

i bought a navy canvas changing bag from topshop maternity - it looks like a cool casual bag and is masculine enough for dh to be happy wandering about with it on too. which is a help actually, as if i had got a nice womanly one he would have refused to carry it for me

kikidee · 05/02/2007 20:19

I've got my eye on this

have you looked here? luvley

bumperlicious · 05/02/2007 20:28

Whoa, kikidee, nice bag, but I might have to sell the baby to afford that - gorgeous though.
Amaidaiwish, I like the look of those allerhands. Did you say you've had a couple? Which did you like best?
Keep 'em coming girls, this will be my one indulgence after getting everything else second hand!

i have the carry on bag and the shoulder bag
i liked them both, with 2 DDs quite close in age i need the shoulder bag to carry all their (and my) clobber - nappies, wipes, hats, change of clothes, drinks, snacks etc etc

if i had to choose i would say the carry on bag i prefer as it is quite different and stylish (i think anyway!...

weepootleflump · 05/02/2007 20:38

Orla Kiely Pear

or flower print

sputnik · 06/02/2007 10:01

That site of Kikidee's something that looks fab for stuffing the nappies in and moving from bag to bag as needed here . I used a nylon envelope bag that held a free sample of washing powder in my hospital bounty pack last time, but hey, this is a little more stylish

MrsBadger · 06/02/2007 18:53

oh, excellent - that was what I trying to lay my hands on when I linked to the Bag Swap Bag.

sputnik · 07/02/2007 09:35

Great minds think alike. That'll teach me to read the whole thread next time

fluffyslippers · 08/02/2007 12:47

What about trying etsy - lots of funky handmade bags and really reasonable prices (most sellers are in USA but will ship to UK and the exchange rate is really good right now).

Search under diaper bag - I've found some gorgeous ones.

I have an oi oi changing mat with pockets for nappies and wipes etc, folds into a very neat rectangle. Funky black and white print. I put it in my Herve Chapelier brown nylon bag. Bottles go in another oi oi bottle bag.

The nicest changing bag I ever saw was from top shop maternity - black with a gorgeous grey japanese flower print lining and matching mat.

Enid · 08/02/2007 12:53

oi oi changing mat

I have found this indispensable

Earlybird · 08/02/2007 13:00

No idea if they ship to the UK, but got sent a link for this today and think there are some interesting things to consider.....

here

LawdyMissTutter · 08/02/2007 13:01

earlybird there are loads of places online selling skiphops

not sure i'd call it stylish - but very practical (and unisex)

Earlybird · 08/02/2007 13:02

I have brought a Cath Kidston changing bag but it is not flowery. I have brought the cowboy print as it's very retro and a bit quirky so they're not all flowery. They also have a red star one.

I found that I wanted a cool bag that I would use myself with or without a baby but I also wanted something that was unisex so that my DP could carry it around when I wasn't there. So the cowboy print was perfect for us.

I also have several Orla Kiely bags which once I don't need the changing mats will be perfect wipe clean bags. If you really want to splurge (I certainly won't be able to afford it after the little one arrives!) my favourite bag is the Mulberry Emmy bag and it is huge with lots of seperate compartments so is also good!.

sazzybee · 14/02/2007 14:18

amidaiwish - thank you for your recommendation! I had a look at loads of different bags but the allerhand won for the number of bits and pieces and pockets and stuff you get.

Mine arrived yesterday from happybags - £42 from them compared to £50 everywhere else. It's even better than expected - seems very sturdy and well made and best of all - looks quite groovy and unbaby related! Now all I need is for the baby to arrive
