Hi, I know it's been done before and all that but I was wondering if someone can provide me with a checklist with the stuff I need for both the hospital bag, labour bag and baby.
This will be my second baby (32 weeks) and I was extremely organised with the first by 32 weeks.
With this one I had NOTHING ready at all last week when I started having false alarm contractions. So I went out and got near enough everything but I don't feel 100% ready.
Just wondering what everyone else is doing (like how many newborn vests, sleepsuits etc...).
Thanks in advance!

Hi
I'm 29 weeks and nowhere near ready either (2nd time round too!). I've thought about my hospital bag, but not actually got as far as doing anything about it! As far as I remember las time I took in 3-4 sleepsuits, 3-4 bodysuits, some scratch mittens, nappies, coupleof hats, blankets etc... I'm goingto go and have a look at one of the pregnancy books, it must tell you the answer in there?! Panic!!!

cece · 02/02/2007 16:06

Think I was 38 or 39 weeks when I packed my bags

lulumama · 02/02/2007 16:06

WHAT TO PACK IN A HOSPITAL BAG!! Maternity notes Birth plan Dressing gown (only a light weight one, labour wards are kept very warm) Slippers Socks Nightshirt (to labour in) X2 IF YOU CAN Second nightshirt/pj's (for after the birth - front opening is easiest if you plan to BF)

Toiletries (shampoo, conditioner, shower gel, tooth brush/paste - treat yourself to a luxorious shower gel or nice shampoo..you deserve it!) Hair band , bobbles, clips Lip balm - esp if planning on using gas and air!

A watch (with a second hand for contractions) Camera (don't forget extra memory/film, batteries) Camcorder (although may not be allowed to film the actual birth)

Change for phone and parking - check how much parking is and if you need the right money11 List of friends and family phone numbers Nursing bras (if BF) Flash or anti-bacterial wipes (for the shower/bath and anything else that seems mucky) & anti bac lotion for hands

Cheap plastic flip flops (for use in the shower) Hair brush Drinks and snacks (for birthing partner as well!!) bendy straws good or a sports bottle. Breast pads (whether you plan to BF or not) , although milk might not be in yet. Big cotton knickers...not paper ones..if you have a c.s they cut right into the scar!

maternity pads - 2 - 3 packs as bleeding will be heavy at first.... Dark coloured towel and flannel Going home clothes - maternity or loose!! Care mats...to sit on in the car so you don't woory if waters break! and a book or MP3 player / iPOD..in case yo have time to relax! And for the baby... travel sized changing mat in case hospital dont have one.

wipes...although some hospital encourage and provide cotton wool & water, take cotton wool anyway.Pads better than a roll as less fluffy! Scratch mitts Hat babygros.

or several outfits socks or booties if not taking babygros..need to keep baby's feet warm! bibs & / or muslin cloths

Going home outfit - think carefully about this, it needs to be easy to fit the car seat straps around and make sure it is relevant to the season!! receving blanket for baby to travel home in blankets for swaddling if you are plannning on swaddling more nappies than you think you will need Nappy sacks

happy birthing xxxxxx

I'm 33 wks and have no bag packed
I have most baby clothes, pram etc
no car seat, no breatfeeding nighties no nappies
I am planning a homebirth but am still packing a bag in case I go into labour before 38 wks.

dassie · 02/02/2007 16:40

When should the bag be packed? I was thinking week 35? Is that too late?

banoffee · 03/02/2007 13:34

Oh thanks lulumama what a list!
According to the "books" you should be 100% ready by 32 weeks.
But as it's second time for me I sort of forgot about it. It's only those false alarm contractions that came every five minutes (admitedly after intercourse ) that got me panicking.
But I would say at 35 weeks you should definately be ready my god!!
I've gathered quite a lot of things but have to pack them properly iyswim.
Come to think of it I've quite a lot more things to get.

packed my bag at 37 weeks..then repacked and repacked and repacked it daily until i was in labour !

32 weeks is a bit soon to get ready, that is a whole 10 weeks before you could go into labour !

hippmummy · 03/02/2007 13:46

After DS1 arrived at 35 weeks, I made sure with DS2 I got my bag packed at about 32 weeks and waited....

When I finally went into labour at 40 weeks, I really felt like I was a month overdue

NbgsYellowFeathers · 03/02/2007 13:48

I was moving house when I was 32 weeks so no where near ready

sazzybee · 03/02/2007 23:12

I haven't done mine yet and I'm 35 weeks on Monday. I've got everything so it won't take long.

They said my waters might break early so I think I'm reluctant to do it as somewhere in the superstitious part of my brain I think that if I'm packed, it'll happen

Anglaise1 · 04/02/2007 17:07

35 + 2 weeks and no bags packed, no nappies or milk forula bought and still waiting for car seat to be delivered.

lulumama · 04/02/2007 17:08

i had no cot mattress at 38 weeks, and it had to be specially made! and DH was clearing out the nursery while i was in labour !

Tommy · 04/02/2007 17:22

I'm 38 weeks and although my bag is ready if I need to go to hospital (homebirth planned) the baby has no-where to sleep as moses basket and pram and all other stuff like that is still in the loft

second time round it's all a bit different banoffee

Piffle · 04/02/2007 17:25

this thread inspired mt to go out yesterday and get everything in one fell swoop
We are now organised although still need b/f bras, crib mattress... long sleeved baby vests...

Booboobedoo · 04/02/2007 17:35

Well done Piffle.

I'm 36 weeks today (first baby), and have not packed my bag.

Convinced I'm going to be late anyway, so can't quite bring myself to do it. The bag'll just sit there looking at me.

'Haven't had it yet?'. 'How much longer?'. 'Are you going to put more weight on?'.

That's what it'll be saying.

peachygirl · 04/02/2007 18:10

You are all very eager I had a small provisional bag packed from about this time with only a few bits in - those free bounty nappies, soap bag baby clothes and some Pjs and I properly packed my big bag at 36-7 weeks.

amidaiwish · 04/02/2007 18:21

i packed my bag whilst in labour, both times.
did it to annoy dh as he kept nagging me to pack it! (did have things pretty much ready though from about 37 weeks...)

WestCountryLass · 04/02/2007 19:49

This is my third baby and I haven't got anything ready yet and I am 32 weeks too.

I have moved all the baby stuff into one room, everythings is either boxed (clothes etc) or dismantled (cot etc). Problem being I flooded the bathroom and the insurers are putting new celing in dining room and baby stuff is piled behind dining table etc in what will be the babys room.

Really must get organised as DS was a 34 weeker and DD was a week early...

dassie · 04/02/2007 19:59

Where do you get the free bounty stuff?

marymillington · 04/02/2007 20:04

last time, hadn't packed my bags, cot hadn't arrived, hadn't even ordered buggy, went into labour at 38 weeks. had to borrow carrycot from neighbours.

this time, packed my bag at 38 weeks, reluctantly. 40 weks tommorrow and drumming my fingers.....

LunarSea · 05/02/2007 08:40

Well at 33 weeks everything which we'll reuse from last time is still in the attic (was going to sort it out this week, but dh has gone off on holiday without getting it down, and I'm not sure I'd fit through the hatch myself!).

I have just started on getting essential consumables (nappies/pads/wipes, etc) though.

nearlyfourbob · 05/02/2007 08:48

I thought you meant how emotionally ready - and was going to post to say - not at bloody all.

10weeksandcounting · 05/02/2007 11:52

I am 30 weeks and have been in nesting frenzy for about 10 weeks (its my third)! Do have everything I need but was going to pack hosp bag at 35 weeks - I am going up to Manchester at half term (33 weeks) and thought may take notes, small bag with essentials in and car seat just in case....!! You never know!

10weeksandcounting · 05/02/2007 11:53

emotionally - have concluded that having a baby has to be easier than being pregnant!

Coffeecake · 05/02/2007 13:50

Emotionally: Not ready at all either, I think that's why I'm trying to get physically (materially) ready to make sure that something is.
