this must be really horrible for you. Im sorry.

What did the consultant say to you?

Im sure if I remember rightly that the cord should have three arteries, i think

maybe the midwives on here could give you some more help.

I would probably advise that you do your research and weigh up the positives and negatives about having an amnio etc

Good Luck x

trace2 · 29/01/2007 20:26

thank you for replying Emzickle!

the consultant said it could be strucual, going back on thursday for second opinion then i make my mind up about amio

Poor you. They may have missed something on the scan. I really hope so.

It's a "single umbilical artery" when there are two channels. THere are usually two arteries (to carry waste matter away) and one vein (to carry oxygenated blood in). I did some Googling for you. On here it says that

"About 1 percent of singleton and about 5 percent of multiple pregnancies have an umbilical cord that contains only two blood vessels, instead of the normal three, as one artery is missing. The cause of this abnormality is unknown. If an ultrasound examination shows that the baby appears to have no other abnormalities, the baby is likely to be born healthy."

The amnio is to check for any chromosonal abnormalities. There is a good chance - about 75% to 80% according to what I've read - that there won't be any further complications. The fact that they didn't pick up any other problems on the scan is a very good sign.

trace2 · 29/01/2007 20:32

oh thank you the scanman said it could be chromosonal abnormalities, ill look at link

twelveyeargap · 29/01/2007 20:41

It's hard, but please try to remember that the chances are everything ok.

trace2 · 29/01/2007 20:43

they checked the heart, brain kidneys all they could twice and they think all is alright there

You're welcome. I'll be away Thurs to Sun, but will keep my fingers crossed. Would love to hear an update when you know more. x

Clare123 · 29/01/2007 21:18

Just wanted to say I know something of the worry you must be going. We had our scan last week and they found a potential problem. Its such worry and my heart goes out to you. A lot of people have said to me "it will be okay" and I know that doesn't help me much, so I won't say it to you, but I will be thinking of you.

PhoenixGirl · 29/01/2007 22:44

Hi Trace,
It's horrible when something like that shows up. I had EXACTLY the same with my daughter -- she's fine, but the waiting for more tests was just awful. Hope it goes well on Thursday.

DivaSkyChick · 31/01/2007 16:45

My sister in law had the same thing with her daughter. Everyone thought it was chromozonal (sp?) and scared her out of wits. Her daughter is perfect.

It's AWFUL having to worry but the more I hear about all the things that can look wrong and turn out fine, the more I personally want to stop hearing about anything at all!

We're all sending you healthy vibes and hugs.

Frenchsmallfry · 31/01/2007 17:15

Hi Trace, a close friend of mine had this too, they kept a closer eye on her but she honestly didn't have any problems. Her dd was 9 days late and had to be induced and weighed 8LB. As long as baby does well there is no reason for alarm. As hard as it is not to worry, if everything is normal with baby at 20 weeks the chances for a "normal" successful pg'cy are really good. xxx

Juicylucytoo · 31/01/2007 18:06

Just seen this Trace. You must be really worried. Good luck for tomorrow.

Sounds like the prognosis has a very good chance of being good if they didn't pick up any other problems at the scan.

trace2 · 01/02/2007 08:28
